    scratch build jetpack.....progress

well this is my first jet pack build, and i could not have even come close to trying this with out wizard of flight's plans. HUGE shout out to him! thanks!!

i started this then thought i would take pics as i went.....

    i used 3",2 1/2",4",1 1/2" pvc , foam board and epoxy filler.

this is the basics , all cut for WOF templates.

putting some epoxy filler on because i am terrible with a razor.

two coats of epoxy filler and primer to show me how bad it looks HAHA!

i am starting the rocket i will post some more pics tommorow.

It's strange, but I truly love seeing people put together their scratch-builds at this stage of the progress. Everything is so ugly. And then it's even cooler seeing when you work out all of the nasty pieces and put on that first coat of primer. That's when it all comes together.

    Great work!!

update , added the small band because i was not smart enought to measure right the first time . added some more epoxy at the top. lot more sanding to go before the base starts looking good.

started the rocket and base ,got a long way to go on that.

Aye, lookin good. Which Boba are you going for? And are you using foam on your rocket? If so, you'll need to reinforce it with something to make it last. I used a lathe on mine, and made my rocket from 4"x4" block of wood.
Keep up the good work, and watch for those razors.

i am going for the SE fett. i plan to make a fiberglass copy of the final jet pack and rocket when i am done making it, so it will not weigh that much. i am going to use ultrasil, i think to make the mold.

i have never made a mold before so i doing a some smaller molds first ,i am building the cod armor peice and that will be my first mold. while i am building this.

    Re: scratch build jetpack.....progress

UPDATE: a little progress i added an extra band at the top so the wedges would be more pronounced. i also added the side covers. now after it drys it will be time for bondo and filler. i need my end caps so i can finish the main body.

i also added the bottom hole

now back to the rocket . i have decided to let a wood shop make my rocket and end caps, because the foam would not be strong enough and i do not have a wood lathe or i would do it myself. i hope it is exact. fingers crossed.

here's the finished main pack. still a little rough. one more time sanding and it should be ready for molding. when i mold it , i am going to use fiberglass ,so some of the small blemishes should come out. i also will be able to sand on the fiberglass more than i could with foam board and bondo. HAHA!!

i am also doing the opening in the back like the boba maker jet packs.

after some thought , i look at this and realized that the pack looked like bantha poo-doo, so i am redoing the top caps and the teeth on the top band , and a hell of alot more sanding. so i will update this thread when i have the whole pack done and ready to mold.

update , i am done as done gets , this thing is ready for molds!!!! after much sanding and cursing, and redoing the caps and teeth on the band, i am pleased with the way it came out. if i had to do it all over again it would be easier and look better. well for my first try it ain't bad.

still have to finish the door, but no big deal.

It's always interesting to see these pieces from their beginnings as scrap to the highly polished finished product.

don't be discouraged, i mean come on. i looked at MOW's and BM's packs and was like those are freaking sweet!!! but i did not let that discourage me from building my own. at one point during the build i was like this looks bad. then i spent a week resanding everything.

just take your time. if something is not right do it again till you get it right.

you can't get good at something until you do it. most of the time you will do it several times before you get it right.

    good luck!

i got half of it in urathane rubber as we speak. i hope to have the first one casted be the end of next week, but it is getting really cold so that does not help with the fiberglass and gelcoat.

oh how i wish i had a heated shop.

this project was a total failure , thanks for playing.

i destroyed the master molding it. and destroyed the mold trying to cast it. and destroyed the casting after i saw how out of wack the casting came out of the mold like.

    **** it!
