Dec 7, 2014, 7:47 PM - Scratch Build Jet Pack Harness Questions #1

I am working on my Jet Pack Harness Scratch Build. I bent an aluminum tube to the proper "sissy bar" shape. i have black seat belt webbing and; although, they are a little narrow, I have 2" X 1/2" rectangular "split rings" on the way. The only thing I am stuck on, it the larger 2" X 2" square (angled) split rings on the sides at the bottom where the belt and shoulder straps connect to.

Has any one come across a found part that will pass for those parts?

Or a source for the correct size of the other "split rings"?

Ora source the rivets on the grey straps?

Those strap connector/ring parts seem to have countless names.

    Thanks

You and me both. I've been working on my harness too and can't find them anywhere. I've spent hours on end looking at every hardware store, belt making supplier, and horse equipment store on the web it seems. I'll be watching this thread to see where everyone gets theirs. Good luck man!

    Chrisrose:

I do have a US divers tank harness that I bought for the belt buckle. It does have two metal, rectangular "loops" that have inner dimensions of 2 and 1/16 inch by 3/4 of an inch. I'd be happy with that size, but need 4 more of them ideally. I will likely use those on the grey straps and the narrower ones for the part of the harness hidden by the vest. I did stumble upon a 2" square drapery rod ring on-line. Looks like it could have potential for the bottom, but I'd want to see one. Might not be strong enough. Most drapery stores don't stock that stuff.

Chrisrose. I was unable to find 2" square loop rings for the lower back of the harness. The drapery parts were $6 each and #21 to ship. Out of frustration, I made my own using a vice, a square, my arms and a hammer. I used a 3/16 plated rod from Menard's. only cost about $2. They actually turned out very nice. The problem is, the webbing bends. The actual prop did not have square rings. They were angled squares or rectangles that pointed down. I am going to try my hand at making them like the originals.

Square rings warp the webbing. Made new trapezoid shapes.

Looks really good and sturdy, speaking on the way it straps around you. Feel nice and stable with the pack on?
