Sci-fire Chest Display....

Sure. The problem is the amount of current that a watch battery can provide and the life expectancy. The 9volt although bulky will probably run this unit for a good 6 to 8 hours. The watch battery will not provide enough juice to run this for more than a few minutes. I can use something like an L544 camera battery that is roughly 1/2 the length of a AAA battery but it also will not run the unit for more than 3 hours without losing power. Plus, the camera batteries are about $7.00 a pop. versus $7.00 a box of 9v. I am willing to make them however the majority of people want. I just want to make sure that you are all aware of the trade off.

Thanks for the questions. Keep them coming.

Best regards,

John

By-the-way, the units can be ready to ship within a couple weeks. The boards are almost done and I can turn out 40 units a week. If you are truly interested in a very solid state chest display, please let me know.

I know there are others who are making these same displays. I don't wish to snuff them out. I am just trying to make this into what I will want for my costume. I already know that I want a custom display pattern as well as a screen accurate. This unit will allow that.

Best regards,

John

Just to keep the waters clear, I wanted to emphasize what I said in my last post. The reason I mentioned my set was just for the sake of discussion, regarding the room in the chest area. I for one welcome others to build lights (for themselves or sale), that's why I offered my schematic for the DIYers. :)

Oh, and mine is micro-controlled, and upgradeable by replacing a chip as well. Maybe great minds think alike. ;)

Good luck,

I've seen your display. It's a spectacular setup. I started this because I was talking about it to our electronics guy. He said he could make me one. I flipped him some cash and poof. He then asked me to see if there were others interested in the same thing. That's kind of how this whole thing came about. I'd actually like to colaborate on some really cool projects with some people. I have a great shop of guys that have all the talents to make very cool stuff. Check out my work website.

You can see what the guys are capable of building.

Like I said...It is fun. We see different stuff everyday. It's a bit of stress though. The deadlines are awful. Many times, we have to build a gadget that has motion and is built from scratch in the same day. We pull many 18 to 22 hour days. AWFUL!

BTW. I was watching ESB on DVD last night...man I cannot tell what Boba's chest display says. How in the hell did you guys figure that out from the analog video tape. The DVD is way clearer but it's still almost impossible to see.

I can ony speak for myself and say ... No possible WAY I could have figured it out. :) Luckily, I had a lot of motivated individuals offering up information back when mine were developed. The sequence I used was based on what a few individuals agreed upon was screen accurate (or as close as they could possibly tell after frame-by-frame analysis). :)

Hopefully the characters will be clearer on the up-coming ESB DVD.

I've had a chance to preview the new ROTJ DVD, and there is nothing that shows or clarifies the chest light display in ROTJ.

I gotta watch them again. I just don't see how to tell from these images. I've frame grabbed and I cannot tell what they read from the DVDs.

I know I am very interested in these displays. They are awesome. I need a new piece to get me motivated into working on stuff again. I've been stuck at about v 1.4 for too long now.

The boards will be here in two weeks. We reduced the footprint as much as possible. We spaced the LEDs based on the online specifications. This thing looks excellent. The battery cord can be extended very easily.

Nice set of lights. Interested!
