RS ROTJ build

Hey guys. Been a bit of a lurker here on the forum but now that I have the bulk of my parts I'd like to start posting my progress. I've been posting on my garrison message board so I think I'll just copy and paste my posts from there.

Let me reintroduced myself. My name is Eric from VA. Been researching all summer and ready to dive head first into this project. I love what I see on here and hope I have half the talent you guys do. I'm an experienced plastic model builder so the painting is exciting for me but this certainly is going to be one of the most challenging jobs I've ever done. I'm use to weathering where you want but never had to copy weathering marks. Can't wait. So without further ado I'll post what I've done over the last week. Enjoy. And don't be to harsh on me. Lol

Very excited. Soft parts came today. Top notch quality from Arkady on TDH. Highly recommend. Time to dirty them up now. Hope to start with the boots on Monday or Tuesday. Here at some pics.

Some progress. I bit the bullet and worked on the boots. I'm really happy with them. I feel the closely resemble the original photos. We're starting this project on the right foot. No pun intended. Lol. Ok so the first pic is what I started with.

I darkened them with a base layer and highlights and the looked like this.

Then finally hit them with some burnt umber, purple and some straw colors to get the finishing touches. Oh and sanded the ribbing a little for wear marks.

Finally I weathered the soles. I just need my spikes and I'm ready to hit the dusty trail. Ok. I'll stop now with the puns. Lol. What do you guys think?

From Sept 2

Here it is. My box arrived. So excited and scared. So much to do. Think I might start on the bucket.

From Sept 4
Finally compiled a list of paints. About 35-40 different colors of mostly Humbrol some Floquil, Poly Scale and Testors. Not easy getting all these colors. Some are discontinued and I had to resort to paint conversion charts for other brands. I'm sure I'll need some more as I move along.

Decided to start on the gauntlets. They look to be the most time consuming to build. Being an experienced model builder they draw my attention most. The painting looks a lot more straight forward vs the bucket. I'll get my feet wet there first. Pictures to come soon. I'll be roughly assembling them while I wait for the paint to arrive.

From Sept 5
Been working hard on the gauntlets. Specifically the right one. I decided to put hinges on the gauntlets and plan to Velcro the other side with a tab. I used E6000 to hold the hinges in place. Here is pics of the inside and outside.

As for the other parts where the tubing hooks up I know they will take a lot of stress and abuse knocking into stuff. So I got some insert nuts and drilled out holes for them then used some JB Weld to lock them in place. Waiting now for them to dry so an update after that. Reference pic here.

From Sept 5

Right gauntlet mostly assembled. The pipe parts are screwed securely in place. I'll glue them later. Just have the darts and little tube to put in. I'll be hitting it with primer hopefully tomorrow and should bring it all together.

I was able to fasten stuff together and primer it up so it looks more uniform. I have to putty some seams and such. Assembly should be done after that. Just waiting for paints to come.

Should be all up to date now

Left gauntlet assembled. I just have to break it back down and fill in some of the pits in the casting. Pretty happy with the progress so far. Might put down some silver on the right gauntlet and start painting on the masking film for the wear marks.

Boots look really nice. I also bought a RS helmet and armor and jetpack, so I will check this post often to try to copy what you do, hehe. Best of lucks to you dude!

You need to trim that left gauntlet down a WHOLE LOT.... its way to thick up top.

Wow. Thanks! I just didn't see it. I knew there was something weird but couldn't put my finger on it. Now that it's pointed out it bothers the heck out of me. Should be an easy fix.

Thanks man. I'm sure there is better talent on this board but I'm flattered. Good luck with your build also. I'll keep my eyes open for yours.

Ok. Fixed. Think it went smoothly. I probably could have taken a little more in the front but things were fitting and lining up and didn't want to push my luck. Been down that road way to many times.

Hi there Eric and welcome to the boards. Your build is looking good so far.
I'm not sure if you're going for 501st acceptance or not or if you're going for an accurate build, but there are a few things I noticed on your gauntlets that you might want to fix before you go further.
On your right gauntlet, those two little toggle switches should be push button switches. I would check the found parts section for the correct ones. Are those the ones that came with the kit? Also, on your right gauntlet you will want to bring your whipcord housing further down towards the 'equator' of the gauntlet. You have it mounted up too high. Check the reference photos in the gallery section.
I see that F4R has already corrected you on trimming down the side of that left gauntlet. You might even think about trimming down some more of that curved section that fits over the top of your hand....but not much. Also, the slant on the front of that flamethrower is way too far forward. I know it came to you like that, but I would check the ref photos in the gallery to see what you can do to correct that as much as possible. I'm not crazy about hinges on gauntlets because they're exposed (and also not how they did it on the original costume for the film), but it's your kit so do what you want. I hope you don't view this as nitpicking rather than help. You have made a large monetary investment and we all here would like to see you build the best possible costume that you can. :)
Oh, one more thing. Since you're doing ROTJ, you'll want to add a dent on the right breast plate (before you paint it). Thanks to F4R for that info about 3 years ago.

Thanks a lot for the input. Helps a bunch. Making more work for me but that's my doing. Lol. I agree with most of what you said except for the toggle switches. Is this not a screen shot for ROTJ? They are the ones that came with the kit.

I do know the hinges are not screen accurate but being in the inside of the arm I went with it. I like the convenience of only having to line up one side. I am going for 501 but didn't think this would be a huge issue. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I moved the whip cord down as said. I totally agree. Is this better?

The flame thrower I can work on. I agree it's to angled. I'll get on that. And as far as the part on top of the left gauntlet I'll see what I can do but I might just leave it alone. Maybe just a slight trim but like I said didn't want to push it with everything lining up.

Thanks again. Just let me know if I'm not correct about those switches.

welcome....sorry I am no expert at any of this since I am new to Fett. I am hoping I will be able to contribute at a later time. I was just wondering how to do the gauntlets (after I actually buy a set), and your method gave me some ideas, thanks!

Just learn from my mistakes. I'm lucky everything I've done wasn't to bad to fix. When you have to start adding material is when it gets hair pulling. Good luck.

Think youre on the right track but looks like the front is still to thick....there should be a taper not a flatness to the top.
