    Jun 6, 2010, 5:30 PM - ROTJ/ SE Jetpack build *PIC HEAVY* #1

I got this pack from a fellow member here some time ago (thanks Charles) and went to work on it about 3 weeks ago. I'm fairly sure it is a "Bradley Fett" kit. It is Vac formed plastic and resin. This sucker came in over 18 PIECES and it was very difficult to get all the parts to fit together right. So. 100 % screen accurate? No. But pretty darn close in my opinion. It will have hooks shortly, as soon as I order them. Feel free to comment or complain.

As you can see there were sooooo many gaps and joints that needed to be filled. I've never done so much gluing, bondo and sanding on one project.

Most of the resin pieces that came in the kit. Some in pretty bad shape, some broken. Again, lots of sanding and bondo.

I epoxy'd in 1" PVC caps into the thrusters so a long piece of piping could be inserted thru the body and hold the thrusters in tandem.

Missle portion done. Colors are boxcar red, chrome silver, black and grimy black.

All base colors applied. I was getting worried because it looked so "tuti-fruiti" without any dirt. Colors are light blue, boxcar red, flat white, Up armor yellow and black..

Here's where I am today. Weathered with chrome silver, grimy black and rust. The back cut out is held in place with some strong magnets so the inside can still be accessed. Missle and thrusters are removeable.

Wow, when I saw it in the base colours I was like mmmmm but then the weathering...Wow. That looks bloody amazing mate, seriously exceptional paint job.

Although I dont know whats better, the jet pack or your dog lazing it out on your lawn
    Great work though,

Thanks Lewis! I used to see finished jetpacks here for sale with asking prices of $500 + and I was like....yeah right. Well, now I get it. This thing was a bear to prep and paint. Came together better than expected though for my first run.

That's good to hear after looking at yours because I'm paying to have mine painted up so after the JP and the paint job I'll have around $600 into it. Your JP looks awesome!

Mate I wouldnt be suprised if people here would pay $500 just for the paint job youve got alone. The only thing on my fett I didnt plan on painting was the lid, but im starting to worry about the JP now. Looks amazing though mate, are you planing on putting any decals on?

Agreed. Excellent work! Painting is not really my forte and I'd have to say that what you've done with this pack is incredible. I've seen a vac formed one like that up close and in person and all I can say is that it must have been a nightmare to assemble and make it look like one piece. Hat's off to you bro!!

Thank you all. I looked at alot of other members' packs here and used a little this and that for reference. There are some mighty talented folks here in the TDH family. I will get with LUCKY here and order some decals. That should pretty much do it after I put the hooks on.
I never worked so hard to make something new look so beat up and dirty.

There is a back plate. I rigged it with some strong magnets so you can still access the interior. I thought it would be cool for storage like keys, wallet...small bottles of single malt scotch, ya know, important stuff.

Many people do not realize the amount of work involved in painting the ROTJ Jetpack.
It is quite a beast to do,especially if you don't go topical.
BTW- I charge more than $500 for the paintjob alone.

Well slave1pilot theres not many who can paint as good as you so no wonder

butterbean- how did you actually paint it, airbrush, rattlecan? Also how did you do the damage, was it layered or did you paint it on by hand? Just curious as your pack is exactly how I would want mine to look like when I actually get one and start painting it
    Thanks,
    Welsh

I painted it by hand using floquil and polyscale bottled paints. The white and yellow took SEVERAL coats but the blue covered in two I believe. For the scratches and and scrapes I did two methods. I used bright silver paint (bottled) poured some on a paper plate and then dipped "chore boy" copper scrubber in the paint. It is like a brillo pad but all copper mesh. I then just randomly started dabbing here and there and it worked suprisingly well. For smaller areas, I dipped a couple of "strands" from a broom in bright silver and layed them here and there to give the illusion of....well.....scratches. I hope that makes sense. Kind of hard to describe without you actually seeing the process. I then finished the pack with "grimy black" (bottled) and several coats of Testor's Dul-cote.

Little update. To finalize this thing I installed my hooks from FullMetalFett (which are awesome by the way) and put my decals on (Thanks Scott, also awesome)
