I think I will be over later!! NICE.![]()
working on the yellow and red
You don't waste anytime do ya DM! Keep going I want to see a finished JP by Monday!
Are these the colors that are posted on the sticky? Can you give the color assortment when you get the chance to. It gonna be a sweet jet pack when its all said and done.
Colors so far:
rock Island maroon
Copen Blue
Up Armor Yellow
I am not 100% satisified with the Blue so I will be adding some dark shades to it with my airbrush

Looking good so far... I agree that the blue needs to be a bit darker... Planning on keeping an eye on this thread...
done for this weekend...got most of the base colors done.
Man, that's looking great!
The jet pack is the last 'large' component I still need to do, and I'm definitely going to keep this tutorial in mind.
Is the Copen (I'm assuming Copenhagen) Blue a Floquil/Polly S color?
Not done yet... Your slacking...j/k Awesome job so far

Looks great so far. I plan to get BM´s JP in August so I will keep this thread in mind.
Looking sweet so far man!!!![]()
DM - I think the blue is a great choice.
Keep in mind that your flash lightened it up a bit. The key as I'm sure you know, is weathering. Once you start applying your "dirt, grease and grime"
it will darken up nicely. When it's flashed, you will still see the lighter color underneath as you can see in the flash photos taken at MoM/AoSW. Based
on those pics, I think your choice is a good one.
FP
Lookin good so far.
When you list the colors used could you please also list the manufacturer as well.
AHEM! DM....It's now Monday! Are you finished yet!
Great work so far!
Flashes never do anything good for color when taking armor and prop pics.
But its looking sweet!
well done
thanks..FP
your 100% right on the FLASH...the blue is darker in person.

airbrush...and yes masking these in sections is taking forever!!

I ended up masking mine a total of 6 times. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy!
Are your colors acrylics or enamels? Which brand paint?
acrylics...polly scale

I must say the top of the rockets was a pain in my ***..I had to do it three times before I got it right....all I have left is the bottom of the rockets and then the base coats are done!!!
STRIPES!!!
more pics!! I hand painted the symbols.
Bro you make it sound easy....it looks good.
Hey, I know that symbol. . . It's Mandolorian for "I brake for nobody!"![]()
Looks fantastic!
OK..
1st pic is of completed stripes
2nd begins the weathering- I used Brunswick green - its not green at all..in fact it looks 100% black to me
3rd pick includes weathering with MILW Road Orange highlights
All of this was done with airbrush
![]()
Lookin good bro, thats how I did mine also as far as the weathering, airbrushed an ash grey into the deeper crevaces, then a wider layer of brownish ontop of that, I then went back and touched up spots I thought needed more, then I black washed it to taste.
Superb job, comming along nicely
thanks...the weathering looks so much different in person. The flash really washes it out in these pics.
I am going to black wash it tomorrow!!

I am going on vacation with the family until June 10th. Look for more updates in about two weeks!!
OK...back from my vacation!!
the only thing I did this weekend was the black wash. these pics dont show the detail as good as in person but it will have to do. I will be starting on the silver battle damage this week!!
sorry it has taken so long for a update!!
Everything is topically done. I first traced the battle damaged on with pencil and then painted it with model master silver chrome.
Dang that is looking great. I am thinking about getting into airbrushing.
That looks fantastic, I cant wait to see this in person!!!
I think some folks try to shy away from topical, although I belive that was how the jet pack weathering was done. It looks authentic and real in my eyes. I hope you come to the SciFi expo in july bud! Keep up the great work!
Your JP is looking great. But I never expected anything less form the outstanding paint job on you helmet. Thanks for posting your progress.

Looks great so far J, MORE pics.
The thing you need to remember about topical is that it doesn't look real close up. In pictures it looks great but up close it looks topical. The real one may have been done that but onscreen you can't tell. I've seen stuff painted topically in person and it made me realize how much better masking is. It's more work but definitely looks better.Originally Posted by evan4218

I agree with you 100%...however masking is a pain in the ***. I personally hate doing it. topical is easier in my opinion and if done right it can look very good to 99% of the people who will see it. Only 1% of the FETT nuts like myself can tell the difference

lots of water very little paint mixed together and then you basically get a brush or rag and wash the entire jet pack. it gives it a very dirty beat up look.

Looks great DM!
Gotta question: How do you apply the brush strokes so evenly? As in (at least in the pics) I can't tell that the silver was applied with a brush. It's so even that it looks as if it was airbrushed or spray painted. That is what has kept me away from topical in the past: You can tell my brush strokes are brush strokes. Should I use thinner and thin the paint before applying it?
Don't load your brush up with paint. Use a smaller brush, 20/0 or 10/0. I usually clean my brush every 10-15 minutes, and shake the paint then.
Great tips Buckeye! That's pretty much how I do my topical also (though with a slightly larger brush.)Originally Posted by Buckeye_01
I use more of a dabbing motion with the brush, not "strokes" per se.
Cleaning the brush and shaking the paint are musts!!![]()
I am finally in my new house so I will get back to work on this project this weekend!!

wow ! how did I miss this thread ! so many threads to archive, so LITTLE time !
here is what i do to get rid of brush strokes... (with acrylic paints)Originally Posted by ShireFolk
let the first layer dry till its a bit tacky... then apply a second layer with a really watered down mixture of the same colour. something like 9:1 ratio. This seems to work on small details.
On larger areas you might want to try a second layer paint 90 degrees from the first layers brush strokes or wetsand the area and apply a layer again.
Beautiful work DarthMiller...
This place is just oozing with talent and wannabe Bounty Hunters![]()
finally some updates for ya
base color white applied to rocket and thrusters
testors chrome applied to rocket tip
mist with reefer gray around base of rocket
mist with black to darken up a bit
more work on the rocket
mist with rock island maroon
taped off black stripe at base of rocket
painted bottom of rocket rock island maroon
one thing to note..this entire jet pack is topical.....however after misting the top of the rocket with rock island maroon I used painters tape and to remove some paint to create damage look. the paint just peels right off of the TESTORS chrome and it really came out nice.
Very Nice work !!!!
and the final bit of damage to the base of the rocket..
I am lovin' these updates dude! Your totaly rockin' that jet pack!!! Cant wait to see it in person next weekend.
thanks bro
I tryin to get my stuff done by next weekend!!..just need to finish my thrusters, my FP cod and backplate and then I will be about 95% done with my FETT!!!!

DM, can you show a pic (or at least tell me) what color you have done the back? From these pics (and most others) I only see the front (I can't see the AoSW or MOM pics as I am at work...) but not the back... How have you colored it? Yellow? Blue? or is it split somehow???
DM.....I love the way your Jet Pack came out....AWESOME!!! (GODFATHER voice here): We could probably talk about some.....business!![]()
