Are these the colors that are posted on the sticky? Can you give the color assortment when you get the chance to. It gonna be a sweet jet pack when its all said and done.

    Colors so far:

    rock Island maroon
    Copen Blue
    Up Armor Yellow

I am not 100% satisified with the Blue so I will be adding some dark shades to it with my airbrush

    Man, that's looking great!
The jet pack is the last 'large' component I still need to do, and I'm definitely going to keep this tutorial in mind.
Is the Copen (I'm assuming Copenhagen) Blue a Floquil/Polly S color?

DM - I think the blue is a great choice.

Keep in mind that your flash lightened it up a bit. The key as I'm sure you know, is weathering. Once you start applying your "dirt, grease and grime"
it will darken up nicely. When it's flashed, you will still see the lighter color underneath as you can see in the flash photos taken at MoM/AoSW. Based
on those pics, I think your choice is a good one.

    DM,

Are your colors airbrushed, or rattle can? I found masking these suckers to be a very tedious job! Not trying to steal your hijack your thread, but here is mine before the heavy topical weathering. The flash did some funny things to my colors.

I ended up masking mine a total of 6 times. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy!

Are your colors acrylics or enamels? Which brand paint?

    OK..

1st pic is of completed stripes

2nd begins the weathering- I used Brunswick green - its not green at all..in fact it looks 100% black to me

3rd pick includes weathering with MILW Road Orange highlights

All of this was done with airbrush

Lookin good bro, thats how I did mine also as far as the weathering, airbrushed an ash grey into the deeper crevaces, then a wider layer of brownish ontop of that, I then went back and touched up spots I thought needed more, then I black washed it to taste.

    Superb job, comming along nicely

Everything is topically done. I first traced the battle damaged on with pencil and then painted it with model master silver chrome.

I think some folks try to shy away from topical, although I belive that was how the jet pack weathering was done. It looks authentic and real in my eyes. I hope you come to the SciFi expo in july bud! Keep up the great work!

The thing you need to remember about topical is that it doesn't look real close up. In pictures it looks great but up close it looks topical. The real one may have been done that but onscreen you can't tell. I've seen stuff painted topically in person and it made me realize how much better masking is. It's more work but definitely looks better.

I'm not knocking this paint job at all. It looks great. Nice job DM. Just voicing an opinion.

I agree with you 100%...however masking is a pain in the ***. I personally hate doing it. topical is easier in my opinion and if done right it can look very good to 99% of the people who will see it. Only 1% of the FETT nuts like myself can tell the difference

lots of water very little paint mixed together and then you basically get a brush or rag and wash the entire jet pack. it gives it a very dirty beat up look.

    Looks great DM!

Gotta question: How do you apply the brush strokes so evenly? As in (at least in the pics) I can't tell that the silver was applied with a brush. It's so even that it looks as if it was airbrushed or spray painted. That is what has kept me away from topical in the past: You can tell my brush strokes are brush strokes. Should I use thinner and thin the paint before applying it?

Don't load your brush up with paint. Use a smaller brush, 20/0 or 10/0. I usually clean my brush every 10-15 minutes, and shake the paint then.

Great tips Buckeye! That's pretty much how I do my topical also (though with a slightly larger brush.)
I use more of a dabbing motion with the brush, not "strokes" per se.
Cleaning the brush and shaking the paint are musts!!

here is what i do to get rid of brush strokes... (with acrylic paints)

let the first layer dry till its a bit tacky... then apply a second layer with a really watered down mixture of the same colour. something like 9:1 ratio. This seems to work on small details.

On larger areas you might want to try a second layer paint 90 degrees from the first layers brush strokes or wetsand the area and apply a layer again.

Re: ROTJ Jetpack step by step

    more work on the rocket

    mist with rock island maroon
taped off black stripe at base of rocket
painted bottom of rocket rock island maroon

one thing to note..this entire jet pack is topical.....however after misting the top of the rocket with rock island maroon I used painters tape and to remove some paint to create damage look. the paint just peels right off of the TESTORS chrome and it really came out nice.

DM, can you show a pic (or at least tell me) what color you have done the back? From these pics (and most others) I only see the front (I can't see the AoSW or MOM pics as I am at work...) but not the back... How have you colored it? Yellow? Blue? or is it split somehow???

DM.....I love the way your Jet Pack came out....AWESOME!!! (GODFATHER voice here): We could probably talk about some.....business!

I am in the stage of upgrading what I currently have, and all I have to do is to find out ALL the things I need first (beacon, aluminum details, etc), just before I decide to order one of MLC's V.2 Jet Pack.

LooOOOOOoooonnng time I was waiting for this, and MLC's upgrade to the (still) awesome original version.

MLC....you'll hear from me really soon!
