Has anyone ever researched if the original jumpsuit/flightsuit/coverall or whatever it is was actually a racing suit and possibly Nomex? Can colors be removed or added from/to Nomex?

It has been mentioned before of the possibility of it being a racing suit but I don't believe that anything was concluded.

Something to look for when finding the "right" one, is the chest stitch line seen in this picture.
As far as color removal and dying, I would think that it should be doable for most fabrics. If you cannot use "Rit Color Removal" you can always bleach the color out and redye it.
If the chest line stitching you are referring to is the downward swooping horizontal line just above the waist, then I am at a loss. I have not found a single suit with that line except for a vintage racing suit. Most non-racing suits have the line but it does not swoop downward.
The Chest stitch line could be just that, a spot where the top of the chest is stitched to the stomach portion.
However, I think it is a hidden zipper. I had a jumpsuit that had a hidden zipper very similar to what we see in that Preproduction photo. Mine was a little higher than the original.

(There was a pocket on this jumpsuit that had a Snap closure, I removed that pocket, couldn't remove the snap).
