    Paints?

Okay guys im needing some advice . Im looking to start painting some Fett items in a few weeks and im kinda stuck on the paints. Im going down the rattle can route, while most of the colours I am using are Satin, their are one or two colours that are gloss. Now I want the entire piece to have a satin finish, so will using a satin clearcoat give a satin finish even on the gloss paints?

i believe if you spray a Dull or Matte finish on anything it will tone down the gloss quite a bit...what you can do, and i have done as well, is after you spray the gloss paint, when it has dried, use some very, VERY fine steel wool, #0000 is the finest, and lightly buff the armor with it...dont press down cause it will act like sandpaper if you press too hard, just lightly rub the steel wool on the surface and that will tone it down big time... then after that, i recommend Testor's Dull Coat, good stuff! expensive, but great effect...cheers!

    Short answer: yes.
If you're spraying a clear coat over gloss paints, make sure the base coat is dry. I'd recommend at least 72 hours before applying the top coat.
Also recommend testing on a piece of scrap plastic or something to see if the clear coat has any reaction with your color coat.

do not spray thick coats or with high humidity.
the clear will cloud and turn milky.

    Re: Paints?

If the green your using is gloss, I would suggest hitting up your local hobby store. Testors has a satin rattlecan color called "Medium Green". That's what I'm using. Also, Krylon "Bauhaus Yellow" for the shoulder bells. I will prolly be using Testors Matte clear since they seem to have a better mixture with their reducer.

If Nathan agrees with this, then we're on the right track, he's pretty much the paint guru here.

Cheers for the advice guys, im in the uk so most of the paints that you guys use state side arnt available over here, so no krylon or testors but ive managed to find a supplier of rustoleum. Ive been trying to match up the colours although some of the best matches are gloss, I guess i'll try the wire wool and if the gloss is still to shiny I will then add the clear coat.
Thanks for that guys, put me at ease a bit

gloss clear coat is good for going over gloss black; but if you're using gloss black you're probably building vader, not fett. just sayin...

    Re: Paints?

Well I was goin to use a satin clear cloat as thats the type of finish ive seen some folk on here use, but there is a matt clear coat available at the store. So which ever one is the more accurate I guess I will use that, can any one enlighten me?
Ive had a bad experiance as well with a clear coat reacting badly to a paint finish, had to re-paint my entire gauntlets
Thanks for the replies and help guys, im so looking forward to start painting my item

Hey guys, thought instead of creating a new thread i'd post back in this one. Im goin to be purchasing some FP armour soon an I was wondering would I have any problem with the paint cracking as I know that the vac formed armour will have some flex and give in it?
I plan on using humbol paints if that makes a difference :s
    Thanks,

I agree with FettDad, everything we paint we tone down with 0000 fine steel wool, a acrylic wash, and then finally dull coat everything. Rule of thumb is that Bounty Hunting is a dirty business and Fett is the best. I beleive it show show how he is a "seasoned hunter" and dull coat military style is The Fett.

Use a good plastic primer and you will have no issues. On the clear cote, it you are still on rattle cans beware, they tend to spay very unevenly and can be problematic. I really would advise on using an airbrush - no matter how cheap it is.

    Re: Paints?

Cheers Rob, with the clear coat I tried using a rattle can matte clear coat on my airbrushed gauntlets They needed a repaint as it reacted badly. Ive since started to use Humbrol paints and clear coats and havant had a problem with them.
I was just a little worried about the paint cracking from the flex in the armour, so when I get it I guess I will be getting some plasticote primer
    Thanks,
