Re: NEW WAY TO DIE GIRTH BELTS!!!

Will be staining my girth tomorrow. Will let you gents know how it goes and include pics. If all goes well, I will be including the brand and color which can be bought at your local Lowe's for $9.98 a 29 oz can (just under a quart).

Re: NEW WAY TO DIE GIRTH BELTS!!!

First and foremost, a HUGE thank you to whistle8mp!!!

Okay. I did this as a two part process in order to achieve a darker color (especially on the bindings which tend to be a blend rather than straight up mohair).

First I dyed it, wrung it out and hung it up to dry. Start early, cause drying takes a long time.

Second, repeated the process, except I allowed the belt to lay in the dye and soak for approximately 10-15 minutes. Then, ring her out and hang her up again.

If you can have someone help you by holding up the belt whilst you ring it out, it makes the process easier and much faster.

The second tint step acts subtly, but definetely worth the added effort. Also, this particular stain darkens as it dries.

The color I used can be picked up at any Lowe's:

Minwax water-based stain, #13 Spice Red

They have to mix it for you, as it is a decoration tint formula. But that color is a standard Minwax tint color. Hope this has been helpful.

After first dye app (indirect sunlight):

After 2nd dye app (direct sunlight):

    Done!

Sweeeeet! Nice work bro! I thought you were doing ESB, guess I was wrong...now I need to find a nice brown stain and do the same process.

    How messy was it?

Not really messy at all. If you do a good job wringing it out, there will be hardly, if any, dripping when it's hung. Why not just order your belt in brown? Just curious.

Re: NEW WAY TO DIE GIRTH BELTS!!!

Seems like this is one of the hardest parts of the costume to get accurately done yourself.. I mean the ROTJ is a nice and deep colour of red, ESB on the other hand is more a darker brown/reddish colour which i havent seen alot of.

Is someone here willing to make one for me? Iam working op a ESB Fett project and would definalty like a good dark brown/red girth belt.

If anyone is up to the task please PM me

Anyway nice job on that girth, it looks great!

Cool dude, thanks if they sport a size 34 iam even more pleased, if not iam still very pleased!
I guess the weathering would also add up to a darker more used colour, it would definatly make it darker.

Anyway, i'll send you a PM tonight, gotta go to work now!

No problem D. Check out the interest thread I just started in BF costume forum.

And again, without whistle8amp's initial tutorial, I'd have never had the guts to even attempt it.

The don't make a brown in anything smaller than a 44 from what I've seen.

Re: NEW WAY TO DIE GIRTH BELTS!!!

bet on at least 50', but it's always good to go over. I would go with 70+ feet. remember, you have to make 14 strands in all.

Re: NEW WAY TO DIE GIRTH BELTS!!!

Yeah, bruv. Not really sure how well polyester is going to take stain. I know its hard as heck to stain trevair, and I'm pretty sure they're similar synthetics. You really need mohair. HorseloverZ sells mohair belts by Centaur.
