New Boba ammo pouch, finished and ready!

Decided to start a new topic. My plan is to initially make a non-functioning pair in both leather, and vinyl. The insides will be solid. Then, using MMM's idea, I will attempt functioning ones by using pieces of metal as support inside.
To me, it's not that important if they function. Fett has a ton of other pockets here and there, and these are pretty narrow for someone with gloved fingers to get inside.
This is just the vertical flap, using BB's 4.5x1.85 figures. The stitching is simulated, since this is only a test run. Although, if I made leather ones, I could do the same thing.....but then the stitch count would probably be off!

That looks great, SC. Even the simulated stitching would be fine if the pouch was non-functional.
I don't get any credit for that metal insert idea, as I said, it was used by infantrymen to keep the shape of their leather cartridge boxes that held rolled paper cartridges 250 years ago. Glad I could help.

Is that leather or vinyl material in the test pic? The measurements definitely seem to have worked out pretty well.

Listen to SC! You'll never get a proper looking ammo belt with functional pouches. The flaps will never lay properly! But I suppose having the "functional pouch" option is neat, so that you can store tic-tac's or Pez candies...not that you could get them out or anything

The test piece is leather. As for getting the flap to lie right on the functional ones, I was thinking about gluing a belt piece of metal across the inside of the flap, so it matches up well with the body of the pouch. But that's just a thought. I have yet to try it. Got to make the non-functional ones first.

I really love being told what I can't do . It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Looks like the proverbial gauntlet has been cast down. I need functional pouches to accomodate my set of micro tools that I have been amassing to maintain my metal armor. They can also hold car keys, batteries, cash, cond....er.....gum. I'll work on a set, and share my trials with sithcamaro.

Why would you even put yourself through the hassle of functioning pouches man?? Just way easier not to, not to mention much more accurate. Like Tyler said... Unless you really need breath mints or something. I could understand if they were big enough for a pack of cigarettes in each but it just seems like more work for no reason...

SC - If your using metal to reinforce the flap, why not put a magnet on the inside fo the pouch. A strong enough magnet would hold the flap down thru the leather or vinyl. Being on the inside cuts down on some of the room, but would keep it invisible. I don't know how easy it would be to open with gloves and all, but it's worth a shot. Just send me one when your done!

Re: My Boba pouches are finally underway! Picts inside

It was only a recommendation...or plight or plea
The only reason I mentioned it is because other pouches have suffered in terms of accuracy trying to recreate the pouch with a functional lid. For those people who are more interested in accuracy over functionality, it is a case of not only remaining accurate to the original, but that the original construction has a good deal to do with a final, accurate look.

But I think it is a great idea to have useable pouches for those who would also like to incorporate some functionality into their suits. It would come in handy especially if you have a set of metal armor. Or a booty call

Can't wait to see a final version in vinyl. Have you given thought to incorporting the pouch snaps for the ESB/SE crowd?
I have go back and find the best pic of the snap. Though I suppose it would be easy enough for us to just glue the snap to the pouch lid.

Re-named the thread. I wanted it to fit more with the latest part posts...
Here's a few pictures from today. I gave it some sides. This is only a prototype. Still trying to nail down that slope at the top. The pouches are a little thicker than the will actually be. Becuase of the flaps I made inside, to glue the pieces together, and the thickness of the leather, it made them thicker.
I also tried to make the pseudo stitching look real, using the last of my brown dye.

I don't believe the snap is under the surface. I think may be a glued on "snap." Though I could be mistaken.

But glued under the flap, right? If that's the case, then any ones that I may make out of leather won't really show through, because of the leather's thickness.

I've always thought the snaps were just glued on the outside of the flap. And although that pic is of the SE belt, it does have the best pic to show an outside snap, MMM. Honestly, I am unsure if it is inside or out. Logic to me dictates that they would be glued on the outside of the snap, but I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.

There are three ESB pouches with snaps. I think only two are directly visible. I'll have to check and see if any are "the visible" snap. Could we be looking at one "outer" snap and two inner snaps?

That is of the right ESB middle snap.

I just took a glance at the picture in the VD, and it looks like the pouch, all the way on his left side, looks like it has a male snap on the outside.
Aside from the snaps, any comments on the side slopes of the pouch? Those were tough to try to figure out correctly. Tell me now, before I start making them!

Re: My new Boba ammo pouches - New!

Looks pretty good to me, maybe try wet-forming them on a block of wood that has an exagerated (or cut-in) slant to it. This would essentially force open the bend when closed on the pouch and make a tighter seal. If nothing else works, perhaps using a head-knife, or a skiver/grooving tool, along the inside of the bend would make it crisper.

But, like I said, it looks pretty good to me and will eventually "settle" into place most likely. You're donig another outstanding job, SC. Run with this.

I hate to throw specs without my ref pics on hand, but I'm at work at the moment (I really need to copy my CD to this computer).

Anyway, from what I recall, the pouches are white vinyl painted brown. The strap/flap portion of the pouch is a double layer of vinyl (one piece with 2 side folds I think). The snap could then be attached to the inner fold/back side of the flap and then stiched shut.

Does this make sense with no pics? Maybe I'll comb secol's site for examples if I get the time.

The 1.85 comes from Brak's, and he's got a pretty convincing reason for that measurement. It may be just the screen or something, but we're only talking a difference of .15.

    Gotta love that screen accuracy.

If I had the time/money/obsessive compulsive disorder, I'd be right there with you accuracy fettishists (pun intended).

As it is, it still makes a great spectator sport and gives enthusiasm to those of us who just want to make a costume that won't be laughed at. Gives us all something to aspire to

Like someone else mentioned in a seperate thread, the bar has been raised.

On an accuracy point (and I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong) the stitches appear to be "leaning" in the original. There's probably a technical sewing term for it, but in the faux stitches you've put on, SC, they're straight up and down.

Difficult to explain, but it's like this:

    Original stitching--------Sith Camaro's faux stitching
    -- \ --------------------------------- |
    -- \ --------------------------------- |
    -- \ --------------------------------- |
    -- \ --------------------------------- |
    -- \ --------------------------------- |

Pic 60 in the ref CD shows it pretty well

    http://www.essat.cl/cdref/0001_0100/Boba_Fett_060.jpg

Not criticizing (as I am in no position to criticize the great talent around these parts! ), it's just that I've just hand stitched a load of my own ammo pouches and couldn't put my finger on why they didn't look quite right and then it struck me; leaning stitches! Had to find out AFTER I'd stitched 7 of my 9 pouch lids!

Does anyone else see it, or do I need glasses?

    Si

TK-Fett: Of course there will be a belt with it!

Han Hunter: I see what you mean about the stitching. It looks like one or two of them have straight stitches, but that could also be the angle of the pouch. I'll have to see if I can get my machine to do this.

OK, I'm pretty much ready to make these, unless someone feels that the slope on the side is off, but there's really no way to find out exactly. Plus it appears that the originals are not all identical
You have a few choices as of now.
    Non-functional:
Leather or vinyl (brown leather, or painted vinyl)
    straight stitch or diagonal stitch

And IF I can make functional ones, they will be made with leather. But right now, my main goal is non-functional.
I still need to pick up some white vinyl, and good thread. Then I have to get something to make the solid cores with. Mr.Fett gets his made from lead.

I know painted vinyl is more accurate to the screen stuff, but why go through the hassle when you can just buy brown vinyl instead of painting white vinyl?

You gonna make me offer another way?
The only reason I'd use vinyl, is to make it the screen accurate version, and that happens to be painted. Plus, there's white around some of the corners, where the paint has chipped off.
Otherwise, if I'm not going for the exact screen type, I'd rather do it in leather.

Yeah, the leather is cooler and more realistic....unless it's too thick of a cowhide, then the corners get all funky when trying to bend them to the proper shape. I guess it depends on what ounce leather you get.

Well, for the non functioning sets, since they'll be glued around a solid core, I'm just going to use a thin, flexible leather. If I make functioning ones, they may be think, like my original prototype.

I know white vinyl painted brown is more like the real one but... that was for use on screen, from far away... it didn't need to be real.

I'm REALLY excited about the real leather ones myself...

I've determined that the depth must be the same as the width, 1.85, from one of the very few pictures that have a good measurable view.

    just out of curiosity...

Those belt pouches always looked like police speed loader holders for revolving cylinder guns. Any chance that's what they actually were?

    Nice work, SC.

Slowmo; I have several speed loader belt rigs, and am sorry to report that they come way short, literally, of Boba's pouches. Too bad, with all these PDs going with the semis, there are tons of these old rigs available at real cheap prices.

I tried doing some tricks with the stitching today. I tried a number of ways, I think the way on the bottom is the way I'm going.
Anyone who might have sent me a PM about these pouches, please write me again for an inportant update

Will you be using any specific paint that you can tell us about--should we have to do any field repairs of our own.

Right now, I'l just thinking of using a simple brown acrylic paint, unless you guys think I should use some type of an enamel. The paint on that sample is Folk Art #940 Coffee Bean. Is it the exact color? I'm not really sure, it was the only brown that I had. But once I put together a semi-finished test piece in vinyl, you'll have a better idea.

I think that brown looks pretty good. The belt/pouches seem to have that brown with a reddish tint to it. Acrylics would be my first choice since it's more flexible. Enamels would probably dry harder and tend to crack (just a guess).

Cool, how much time would you say it took you to make one full pouch?? and how much time do you think it will take you to make one full belt?? Cant wait to see it.

Well, started hand stitching one flap last night, and finished it on the train to work. Maybe 1 hour to stitch one pouch? I'm also getting used to using a sewing awl, so I might be able to speed it up a little.....with enough practice.

Here it is! A finished vinyl prototype!!!! The stitching is a little rough, still trying to master the sewing awl. I made the core from styrofoam, but the actual pouches will probably be made from wood.
And now I present....with and without flash!!!

All of the stitching is finished on the leather one. Just need to make a core, and glue the entire thing together. I just used some brown leather, that I had lying around. It's a bit darker than the vinyl pouch you see.

Here it is! I used styrofoam to do the upper slant, for the core, and wood for the lower half. Little did I know that the rubber cement would eat through the styrofoam!
So the upper portions of the sides look a little mushy.
Side by side with the vinyl one, from yesterday. The leather pouch is the darker of the two.

will the real belt look like that as far as color goes on the leather or will it be lighter?

Not that I don't think that the slightly slanted thread pattern might not be more acurate, but I like the looks of your machine-sewn stitching better. I know you're still still getting the hang of the awl, but I didn't see anything wrong with your first attempt.

That "first attempt" isn't stitching at all, it's basically an embossed pattern. Those are not real stitches.

You could use that stitch pattern wheel as a guide and just stitch over it. Pretty much like using an overstitch wheel to lay out your stitches...perfectly spaced and lined up every time.

I tried doing that, but the only leather that it works well with is the thick leather, in the first picture. The leather I'm using for the pouches is thinner, and softer. So the indentations that the tool makes, aren't as easy to see, and sometimes go away.

I think that leather is either too dark or the stiching it too light (or maybe both). The vinyl has a more accurate color to it. Are you planning on getting a lighter shade of leather?

Yes. I hope to go out and look at some next leather on this following Saturday. Until then, I'll probably prep some vinyl flaps.

Seems like evil never sleeps! Tell me what you guys think of THIS one!

Now that I've shown you what it is, let me tell you how it's made! Keep in mind, this is just a test alternative. I will still continue to make painted vinyl, and thinner leather pouches.
This is back to the original test idea. I took some of my thick veg hide leather, dyed it, added faux stitching, and weathered the **** out of it. Well, not that much, bue enough to make it look a little used, and not as dark in color. P.S. I know about the gaps between. This was glued over a crudley made cardboard core. It was midnight, and I didn't want to break out the saw, to cut some wood. :p
This pouch also "functions". The only thing that would be different about a finished one, would be a strip of shaped metal on the underside of the flap, to keep that angle at the top. But this can also be glued over a wooden core, and made to not function.
I don't know, with all of the weathering, and the fact that there was absolutley no hand stitching involved (plus it's leather), I think this is my favorite of the three....followed by the vinyl. Which, by the way, I just got done prepping 5 outer vinyl flaps, ready to be painted and stitched
