Feb 27, 2012, 4:58 AM - Need some help from fellow boba fett enthusiasts!! #1

    Hey yall :D

This is my first thread to start on the discussion board so cut me a little slack if it isn't perfect. I hope I'm putting this on the right discussion board as well...I'm having a little dilemma and I'm hoping to get some clarity and support from experienced armor makers and anyone who enjoys dressing up in costumes to geek out at conventions in general! To tell you a little about myself I am a female who has been in love with star wars for as long as I can remember and most things geek/video games/anime/etc. It wasn't until recently that I was introduced into the wonderful world of conventions! (I am surrounded by non cool people in MS) I have dressed up a couple of times and even recently sewed my own costume (exciting!). When I discovered the star wars convention coming up in august I knew two things for sure 1. I was going and 2. I had to go as a female version of boba fett. I know most girls go directly for the princess leia slave outfit (which one of my good friends will be going as) but my dreams lie more with the bounty hunter. So now we reach my dilemma and why I started writing this post to begin with. (Sorry I'm a fairly wordy person, thus is the nature of females I suppose lol) I joined the dented helmet with the intention of using it as a resource for obtaining this costume and it has proved to be extremely helpful. I have learned that this costume is one of the hardest to make and not only does it take lots of time, failed attempts and resources, it also takes skills. Taking into consideration that I come to this with NO previously tried and true armor making skills, except fair sewing, and want this armor in a certain time frame (August 2012). Top this off with the fact I'm a nurse who works 12 hour shifts and am in the process of selling my house and moving tentatively by May, I don't see it being very realistic that I could actually make this costume myself. So I have consulted with Bobamaker who is willing to make a costume to my specific needs, and his armor really looks legit. However, all my friends (mainly the non geek ones) think I'm crazy for investing what could be a down payment on a car into a single costume. So now I'm torn between wanting to have this amazing costume and the guilt that is starting to slowly take over my desire. As far as money goes, I can handle the price tag with some budgeting. I would just appreciate a little support from some friends in the boba fett costuming world. Am I crazy for wanting to spend the money on the costume? Would I be better off to try and make a shabby version for this August, which I'm afraid with time constraints is all I could realistically manage. Or should I just go with my first instinct and spend the money on something fabulous and memorable. I'm completely serious when I say I want honest answers. (feel free to be brutal as long as constructive) I value the opinions of people in this forum because I know most people who are using this forum really are true fans and understand my desire to want to bring this amazing costume to life. Also any other ideas on how to obtain the armor, armor makers, etc or just thoughts in general, I'd love to hear them. I'm enclosing a picture (hopefully) of a costume that I saw a girl do that really inspired me to want to make a female modified version of boba fett. To those people who are purists and dont like modified versions I completely understand wanting to maintain the integrity of a costume, which I hope to do in mine. Although you will have to excuse me for being a female who enjoys looking like one and want to flaunt it while I got it. Hey, I'm not gonna be 26 forever :P Thanks guys. I look forward to hearing from everyone! :D

i personally don't see anything wrong with making a femme fett; it's your costume, you can build it the way you want. as far as spending your money, i'd say go it. spend the money now and get the costume you want the first time, instead of sacrificing what you want to save not nearly enough to warrant the offset cost. you're just going to buy the more expensive one later, so wahat i'm getting at is: if you want to save money in the long run, get the best the first time.

and be sure to stop by the TDH and BHG tables at celebration. i'm sure i'll be working at one of those tables.

    Welcome to TDH!

It seems your attachment isn't working. The main problem is when you attach an image you have to post it otherwise the image will be deleted after one hour... But you can always re-attach the image: just edit your post then hit the 'Go Advanced' then the 'Manage Attachments' buttons and insert again your image...

This is what I think (altough we are talking about your money and your investment): considering that you really, really want to go to Celebration VI and of course you want to have great memories about the convention (this means pictures or talk with friends, unknown people and why not some of the actors who played in Star Wars) this is where a good suit wins over a bad/hasty setup. If you consider after the convention that you want to sell the whole suit or partying out, I think you have a big chance to succeed with it.

    Good luck on your quest!

There are a few things that come to mind with this...
    1. You could TRY to build a costume yourself getting things little by little piece by piece but this takes a while as parts are not readily available and people who paint them as I can guess you arent going to do that yourself either way and save money more than likely.
    2. You could buy the stuff from BM who charges quite the sum of money for his stuff.
    3. You could put together a costume yourself using what you can figure out may not be screen accurate but it would be yours, something you put time into and care about and learn from.
Its hard to say what Id do, I did something like this but had started 10 months prior to CV, had everything waiting for me 1 month prior when I returned from a long trip away from home for work. Painted weathered assembled EVERYTHING packed it up and hit CV with little issues but a pretty awesome ROTJ Fett. I loved it...and felt pride in compliments I got for it. I dont think Id feel the same wearing a fully bought suit.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I'm really just looking for some positive energy. A lot of people in my life I have told about this new endeavor are not very supportive. Particularly if I'm honest on how much it costs if I were to buy really great armor. Thanks for help with uploading my image. Another noob question: How do I get my avatar to upload. I have a pic on FLICKR I want to upload and it seems to be the proper size 75x100 but just says unable to upload. Fett4Real: thanks for your suggestions. I do understand the pride you can take in making your own armor set. Even in my simple costume I sewed I was very proud. I wish I had entered into this new aspect of costuming/armor making 2 years ago where I would have tons of time to try different methods and make mistakes. but then again maybe I should just wait until the next convention comes around and work on 1 till then. I worry on some levels that I may not be in the same situation to go when that would occur. And again I would love to be able to have a great costume for this convention, thus my problem. such is life right? congrats on building your own suit though.

You can upload from your computer too, you just have to meet the size criteria ==>
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 50.0 KB (whichever is smaller).

My fiance in no way supports my hobby. Ive spent close to $1800 so far and almost at completion. My mando is a Fett look alike with minor visual differences (which is his backstory).. in the end it comes down to if you think you can handle a project as in depth as this. Dont let anyone discourage you and try not to give up if things dont work the way you wanted. Keep pushing to completion and dont stop til you achieve total victory!

You could, for the first time, go with trash can armor. I've seen very successful armor made from those plastic trash can bins with the slight curve (won't be female complementing but close to screen accuracy curves) and only costs $20-$30's. go to good will and piece together long sleeve and short sleeve shirts, pants ect. for the jumpsuit (it won't look great, but gets the message across). And Joan fabrics (or other tailoring stores) would have fake hair for wookie braids and cheap cloth for the side cape.

All and all, it'd easily be a $40-$60 (from the parts I mentioned, excluding helmet and gaunts). Do that, then have a nest egg build so you can afford the good stuff. This would also give you a chance to make mistakes on the cheap stuff so you don't ruin the multi-big-buck stuff in the long run.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

thanks for the support guys! its nice to hear from people with the same hobby. I feel confident that I have found someone who has a great reputation to work with on this project. The price I think is fair for his work but its definitely not unobtainable for my budget. I'm very excited and will be posting pictures in a few months to show our collaboration. Again, thanks for the support. Without The Dented Helmet I would have never found him! saint nasty: I will def be stopping by the DH and BHG respectively. I would join the BHG but I dont think my costume will be accurate in that I am going to have the mid drift out. Other than that I plan to be as accurate as I can. but i cant wait to meet everyone! going to be my first star wars celebration thx again guys

Good luck Katzybugz! And don't think your costume won't be accurate, you never know. Check out TDH's gallery! They have great reference pics on every Fett under the sun (cannon Fett's anyway) that I'm using myself!

Love to hear this sort of story, and best of luck on your build. Take your tome on yout parts, and you will be surprised how much a great paintjob can really make some of the nice armour parts come to lifr. Search here and the net for hraps of reference, tips and techniques, and do your best to ignore what others may think. You see, what some dont undetstand about a passionate hobby like this, is that - sure you ultimately end up with a cool looking costume, but its also about the art direction and fine details , and not just a character. People see the end product which some dismiss as kiddie stuff, but dont see the talent and artistic quaities that go into producing it. Yet show them a paintig you did of a vase of flowers, and they accept it and call you an artist. So its gonna be something a community like this will always throw out positive energy for. In other words - you've come to the right place! Peace :-)

Aww you guys are so sweet Jayvee: thanks for the kind words. And you are right most people don't appreciate the hard work that goes into costuming that live in the average day to day world. That's why I got on here to get a little love from some new friends. I knew I would find support through this forum. Really thanks everyone who posted. I'm so super excited for the Star wars celebration. As far as the armor goes I'm leaving that to a professional this round. Im very lucky and appreciative for him to help me. I know what im asking for is a custom build with some parts. I'm going to focus on sewing the soft parts. I'm sure I will be on here a lot posting pics and asking for advice on improvement. Thanks again
