    Jul 18, 2011, 4:01 PM - My Sons ROTJ Boba #1

Hi all. Before I can start my ESB Boba I have two kids costumes to build, a Republic Commandos (Boss) and my youngest sons ROTJ Boba. It will give me a chance to test my painting skills before I tackle mine.
I got some kids armour from Greg kidsclonearmour. The Republic Commando for my other son which is about 80% complete just needs final paint, weathering and webbing. The kits are great and easy to work with.
I have a set date in mind the first week in August to have them both completed. They have book week at school where on one day in the week they come dressed in their favourite book character and the costumes get judged by the principal. Well this year the boys want to win They want me to come along on the day in my TK to help them. With that said I have just over two weeks left to complete my task.

Just wating on a couple of things they are the gaunts, knees, back plate and jetpack all are coming by the end of this week, fingers crossed. Just have to source a kids jumpsuit which is pretty difficult. I have a vest and a few other things left over from my Boba purchase but they will need to be altered to fit him and have to make some shoes based on one of the great tutorials here.
We did a bit of a test fit with the little Fett. Tried on his soft parts and double sided taped his armour in place temporarily. Will have to pin and dart up the vest and need to fix the girth belt, probably just industrial velcro. Have his boots which need painting and the toe spikes added and some piping to make them look like Boba boots. If the rest of his stuff doesn't make it from the states in time he can borrow my knees and will have to make do without gaunts, back plate and jet pack for a little while. Have sorted out the paints for his helmet and armour which are pretty close as we can't get the exact pain matches here in Australia. The helmet doesnt have a dent so trying making the dent by slowly heating the area and pressing gently into the plastic and sclupting it. His hasbro blaster will be the last thing I paint if I have time. I will be taking a lot more off the return edge of his body armour to make sit closer to his body.
Any tips from the other Fetts out there or Mandos on how the armour should sit would be a great help.
In the pics we used his hasbro helmet because there was some glue drying on part of his helmet.
Oh did I mention I have to have them both finished before the first week in August

I have put the dent in the helmet without destorying the dome...phew. Paint this weekend.
Just a couple of questions about painting. I want to get it a close as possible but my wife says its just a kids costume...don't think she quite understands
I have looked at a lot of pics for the helmet and I am at a bit of a loss to come up with a final colour scheme. Some pics show a red 'keyhole' at the back some silver same for the right ear some show silver and some beige/goldy colour. I would like to get it as accurate as possible for the little guy and for me. So any help would be great.
Myself I am leaning to the silver 'keyhole' and silver ear combo, but would love some of the experts opinions please.

Look great! There are great ROTJ images in the gallery that I used when I did my sons..mostly the MOM photos. Also, where did you get your sons ammo belt?

The ears and the rear keyhole on all Sandy helmets (ROTJ, Pre-Pro 2 and Sandy) is 'metal' and that red you saw on the ROTJ helmet is also right: I think it was painted partially with red (and other colors?) then sanded to the silver layer. And for painting the helmet you can use my ROTJ helmet stencils as base, but you'll have to do some tweaking because of the size and shape of your son's helmet.

I looked at the images of the helmet and there are a couple that show red and silver. That is mye ESB belt he is borrowing until I can make his or pick one up

Mate I have printed off your templates and will be using them on his and eventually on my ESB...they are excellent

I got the dent in the helmet and it looks pretty good if you ask me I primed and painted the helmet and all the armour today silver. Will be attempting the layered painting system, as I want to do that for my Fett, so why not test it out on my sons Fett. I have also made his boots just need to get the toe spikes cut and painted. My wife is doing his wookie braids we asked him what colour and he picked, blonde, brown and green and interesting colour combo Will make the adjustments to his vest this week so I can locate his armour pieces and get the velcro on. We are also dying/fading some clothes for his jumpsuit. At this stage just a pair of cargo pants and a shirt, will look for a jumpsuit later on. Not much to show but will mask out his armour this week and get some pics.

Teased Declan and I told him that he now has to be Jango because the paint looked too good he didnt like that idea too much he wants the ROTJ Fett no matter what

The armour a came up looking pretty good too...I also painted the knee darts and collar studs (keyboard keys)

And made up his boots...just need the toe spikes which will be out of dowel painted silver and I have the aluminium bar to cut and bend. They arent 100% accurate but they look the part.

Quick question. I used toothpaste as a mask on my other sons RC...bit of a process to get it off. I am thinking of getting some masking fluid for the little Fett...and mine . But not sure how it goes with spray paint? Is it still ok to use a masking fluid and spray paint it? I am going to use the layering method to paint the little Fetts armour. Any help would be great. Thanks

Yes, it's OK to use masking fluid with spray paints, but I don't know about the waiting time before you have to remove the masking fluid and not to ruin your paint. Maybe some of the pro's will clarify this for you.

Masked the Fett stuff last night with masking fluid...just to give it a go before I do mine
Did some trial painting tonight in a the heated garage. I am going for the layered technique for the paint job.
First attempt with the yellow which I thought was a close match but when sprayed on the armour no good way to yellow. I was kicking and cursing myself, I should have done a chest piece or something where it wouldn't be seen as much. Then I looked at all the spray paints I have and I misted the yellow with a yellow/orange and well I think it looks ok will be weathered with acrylic wash but 100% better than before.
Pics with my shoulder for a reference.
First try with plain yellow on the left and a light mist on the other one.

Both with a bit more of a misting.

Now that is cool. Something I would have loved as a Kid. All I had was cardboard Stormtrooper and Bikerscout outfits I made. Oh and a Darth Vader costume that was more vinyl skirt and half mask...
Its amazing how simply weathering a paint job can just add that much needed detail. Awesome work, looking forward to seeing the end result.

Well finished painting the armour still waiting on the gaunts, knees, back plate and jetpack from the states...hope the postie hurries up.
Just a few soft parts to finish off...vest, girthbelt. Then look at how to attach everything.
I did the layered techinque and I am quite happy the way it turned out. Just not real happy about the final green though looks a bit washed out, but it might have to do for now can always mask off the weathering and re-spray later on. Just masking off the helmet tonight and will paint it up. Looks like this weekend I will be flat out. Have to be done before Thursday week.

    Rest of photos without flash

Here are his wookie braids that Bec my wife did for him...not exactly canon but they are the colour he wanted and I think they look pretty cool

WOW! You've done an amazing job! I like it!

As you said, the green is a bit different and I think the yellow too (the armor scratch yellow), but as an overall image it's looking really good. Maybe you can dirty it up with a light mist of black or dark brown?
How you plan to do the Left Shoulder and the Right Chest Decals? Paint or sticker?

    Great job!

Thanks mate appreciate the kind words. I am pretty happy on how it turned out, just got to get the right colours before I start mine

The yellow was a bit of a pain too but I used the same as the shoulders. I will dirty it up. I am using pastels and acrylic wash on my other sons RC so will probably just use the acrylic wash on the Fett and some very light misting of matt black in some areas and some paint flicked on in some places.
I do have some decals - ROTJ & ESB from fexinprops - that came with my Boba stuff when I bought it but looking at them they might be a little too big. So I might try and resize some images to fit on his armour and stick them on, not that steady with the hand painting, or might talk to one of the guys in our garrison about some smaller decals.

Got everything weathered, finished the helmet and started soft parts and 95%finished my other sons Republic Commando.....phew
Well after a lot of mucking around finally finished off the helemt. Bec thinks it is a bit to weathered and marked up...she said looks like this Fett has been in a few big battles. I think it is ok, maybe a bit too much, but the main thing is that Declan likes it

Also weathered the armour with pastels as well it helped tone the green down a bit, also misted it with a bit of black matt paint. Put on the decals. We also pinned in the vest and altered the girth belt and ammo belt. The other stuff from the states hasn't arrived yet so will have to fix up my knees for him and he will have to go without gaunts and jetpack for now. Bec suggested not to put the toespikes on his boots for now. He went to sleep early so didn't get a chance for an armour fitting...hopefully tomorrow night.

Maybe the helmet is a bit over-weathered, but being Boba, it's cool. I like what you did with the armor. You know, you can put some black sticker strips or you can paint with black where the chest display is and you won't need to cut that piece out.

You've done an awesome job with your son's suit. Very well done!

Thanks mate that means a lot coming from someone with your talents and skills.

It has been a lot of fun and a very busy few weeks getting two costumes done for the tight deadline. I promised my boys I would have them done and I am happy that I have acheived that for them. As one of the guys in our garrison said when he saw the pics 'your kids are going to stand out from the no doubt dozen or so kids in their craptacular Harry Potter costumes.' Not that there is anything wrong with Harry Potter the little Fett went as him last year....but come on this is Boba Fett and a Republic Commando

Also thanks to everyone for your compliments and help along the way. I will try and get some fitting pics up and some pics of their first 'troop' at school on Thursday.

Well all done...final fitting done...more hot glue more elastic more velcro added...and one happy little Fett...and a relieved dad
No real big issues just had some of the armour plates popping but fixed that after the photos where taken. The jumpsuit - cargo pants and shirt, we died them and it was supposed to be grey and they cam out this grey blue colour...figure that out but I think the blue looks ok will try and fade it a bit and will look 100% better when I get the gaunts, back plate and jet pack. The knees are mine as are the ammo pouches on his belt. Might try and find some smaller grey gloves.
    Let me introduce Declan Fett...

And his big brother Mitchell Boss 38
