My scratchbuilt shin tools using WoF plans

After a little experimentation I came up with a coloring that I liked okay.
First laid down a coat of silver/aluminum. This was the cheapy Wal-Mart paint in the spraycan. I liked it because it had a flat metal color...no sparkles or flake in it.
I then used a 1:1:1 mixture of Games Workshop Burnished Gold, Dwarf Bronze, and Chestnut Wash to get the color I liked. The wash gives it kind of watery consistency which is perfect to get the "hazy" effect.
I did two coats to darken it a bit, also.
FYI - The GW paints that I used I had bought a looooong time ago... probably 9+ years. This was back during the second gen. paint pots with the flip top. They then went to the little fat paint pots with the screw off lid. (These started to dry out the second you opened them and became useless within 6 months) It's sad that I have the same brand paint from 9 years ago that is as fresh as the day I bought it and some that is useless just because of a defective pot design. Although I think they now have the flip top design again.
Anyway the above diatribe was basically just to say that I'm not sure if they changed the color names or if they are still in the current lineup.

So what did you use for the top? I've been wanting to make these from WOF's templates too but I can't wrap my head around how to get the top to stay on if I just cut out a circle of sintra or something.
They look perfect to me also! Amazing job on these.

I used a vinyl hole plug that I bought at Home Depot. It is like exactly the same size as the knife. I trimmed off the plug part and then took the top, which is domed slightly, and drilled two small holes for brass pins and then pinned and Zap-a-Gap'd the dome to the top of the knife. Puttied and sanded the seams and that was it.
I don't know how well this would hold for trooping with, but I am doing a static display so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Been a while since this has been active, but what did you use to build the shin tools? Sintra?
I can see theres been some stacking involved.
I used an old sign that I had lying around that I picked up somewhere along the way. It was styrene I believe. Definitely not Sintra although that would be a perfectly acceptable material to use. I think at the time I had never worked with it before so I had none or probably would have used it for less stacking as the Sintra I eventually got was thicker than the styrene sign. If you have an ACE hardware near you they sell a No Parking Tow Away sign that is very nice styrene and for the amount you get it winds up being much cheaper than buying it at hobby stores. Another good place to go for both styrene and Sintra are sign shops. Although you usually have to buy a large sheet it winds up much cheaper than craft outlets. And if you have a branch of GE or SABIC Polymershapes in your area you can get materials (once again large sheets) even cheaper.

Sign shops? I'm not sure if we have them in australia but I'll have a look!
