My ROTJ blaster

I have been working on this on and off for a couple of weeks. Tonight I finally shot a coat of primer on it. I think it looks pretty good so far.

I bought it as a direct Webley casting. I had to shave the barrel down quite a bit to get my 1 1/2" piece of PVC over it.

The PVC fit a little tight over the orig barrel, but I was running out of material to shave away. :suprise

looks great! what did you end up using for the tip?

I walked around my LHS for about 2 hours looking at everything in the store. In my last isle I found that plumbing escutcheon you see the gun sitting on in the photos. I simply trimmed it down, and viola! It looks perfect to me. Actually, it could have protruded a little more, but its pretty darn close.

I'm at an end point right now. I want to get my scope, and stock greeblies mounted before I do anything else. I was able to get a coat of flat black on it, but for some reason the paint is still tacky. It's been several days since I shot the black. I have a feeling I am going to have to sand it down in various spots and repaint it. The black really brought out some of the bad spots, so I will need to focus my attention on those as well. I don't want a perfect gun, as I think it takes away from that 'used' look. I will leave some of the imperfections in it, but I have to fill all the casting bubbles that were brought out from the black coat. I thought I had all of em filled too :suprise

Do you guys have any recommendations for scope mounts? Currently I am going to find a couple of blocks of plastic and try to machine them with my dremel and a nice cutting bit. I have the measurements from the offical scope mount thread as my template. Did someone cast these a while back? Thanks for all the positive comments! Any help would be appreciated guys & gals!

That paint should have be dry by now...?? :? Was it an old can of paint? Is the brand of primer different than the flat black?

When you say scope mount do mean the mounting blocks (on the blaster) that the scope attaches to or the mounts that wrap around the scope?

I used krylon primer, and flat black. They were new off the shelf from Lowes, but that doesn't mean they are 'new'. I bought an ASI cast scope. The rings are molded to the scope (very nice casting btw). I just need the blocks that the scope mounts to, and i'm good to go! Again, any help is MUCH appreciated!

Hmmm... odd about the paint. Flats usually dry very quickly! :doh

You could make the blocks from wood or styrene. Glue them to the gun and then drill a hole through the block into the blaster. Countersink the hole so it doesn't show and then add the screw. That should be a rock solid mount!

Just a quick update. I have got everything mounted as close to the ref pics that I have. I ended up making my scope blocks out of some balsa wood. I had to raid my FW-190D RC airplane kit to get what I need. I put a couple heavy coats of primer on it to hide the grain in the wood of the mounts. It looks pretty good. It is very sturdy too. I am able to pick the gun up by the scope without a problem. I didn't screw the blocks to the gun, instead I used some thick CA. Obviously I have some weathering to do, so it's not 100% complete yet. The paint on the handle (not the grip) is tacky again. I have sanded and used soap and water to remove any traces of the mold release agent and still no go. Not sure what to do about that. I can only hope once the satin coat is applied it will actually dry. Doubtful, but I can only wish right now. Here are my photos. I know they suck, but I was in a hurry this morning (late for work). Let me know what you guys & gals think. I like the good and bad, so please no sugar coating it! :lol

My only suggestion is to make some fake scope mount clamps out of styrene and add them.

Man.. I hope that paint drys. I wonder what the problem is??? :?

It may be hard to see in the pics, but the scope appears to have the clamps molded in. They don't protrude as much as the screen used blaster.

I don't know about that paint either. I used a new can of Krylon primer and flat black. I sanded it down to the bare resin too. You can tell in the 2nd pic how shiney it is from the rest of the rig. I would say something is wrong with it, but the back side and the part that slides into the stock dried just fine. That's where I have to apply some of the heaviest weathering too. I guess my right glove will have some added weathering too. :)

Check out the attached pic of the ROTJ Blaster from the MOM exhibit.

The part outlined in white is the part you see molded on yours. The part outlined in red covers that part and is actually the piece that clamps the scope to the rifle. There is a plate on each side.

The mount is actually (3) pieces. The part that wraps around the scope and the (2) clamping plates.

I wonder if the resin was not mixed properly or if it was old resin. It may have not fully cured. That may be the reason the paint is not drying.

I wonder if the experts here know how to fix that?? :?

I fully understand now! I went through the pinned scope thread and had a look at various angles of the mount. I usually have my ref CD with me, but Empire at War now occupies my cd drive here at work. I have some thin sintra at home, but my CA glue won't stick to it. Ya know, I may have some thin glastic here at work that will work. Thanks for the input my friend! I am always learning, and having fun doing so!!

I've had that problem also with paint not curing on resin and found that if you use the enamel spray paint like "fusion" or something for painting "plastic" that usually works ok, but still dries very slowly. I've expermented with many ideas and this was the best I came up with. I think it's due to the fact the resin and hardener were not mixed perfectly, I could also be wrong but that's all I can think of.

Looking real nice! What did you undercoat the blaster with? I used etch primer (it helps paint stick nicely (especially on pvc tubing etc). This may help seal any problem areas your having. Looking forward to seeing it finished up

I used plain ol krylon primer. I did have a can of high build primer, but I didn't think that was necessary. The fins on the barrel were a T-track with an adhesive back. It actually came with the blaster (purchased from a TDH member). I don't know who sells it, but it looks really nice once its on there. Sidewinder sells the Webley kits. I don't know the price, but from what I hear they are excellent casts.
