my armor is screwed...

    my armor is screwed...

    to my vest!

i did away with the velcro last night in favor of small bolts and nuts!

i used #6-32 1/2" flat head screws, secured to the inside of the armor with epoxy putty.

for each screw i used a small bit of putty, shaped into a little roll maybe 1/8" diameter and 1/2" long. i rolled that around the screw, placed the screw down on the armor, and then pressed the epoxy into the armor.

once i had all the screws in place, i put a small dot of grey paint on the end of each screw and VERY carefully placed it on the vest. i had outlines already since i weathered the vest AFTER installing the velcro. after removing the velcro, i had armor shaped clean spots to work with

anyway, i placed the armor down and the grey paint left little dots on the armor. i punched holes with a leather hole punch, and then fitted the armor through.

on the inside i used nuts and washers. i put it on over a t shirt and it wasn't uncomfortable. it shouldn't even be noticeable with the heavy flight suit in between me and it.

here's a quick shot of the inside:

the duct tape is the high tech way my light board is installed

oh man, this thread is going to go down hill fast!

i love how it looks now... sitting so close to the vest, with no gap... looks worlds better!

i need to put eyelets in the vest. right now there are raw holes, and that's not going to hold up well.

Do you have any other photos of how you attached the screws to the armor?

    Brian,
You might also want to consider a way to strengthen the holes in the fabric itself.
It will pull and possibly make for bigger holes over tiime. Maybe by putting a frey check of sorts or a glue around the holes or maybe an eyelet would work.
Just an Idea. I'd hate to see the holes get bigger and make for a disaster for you. Just my 2 cents.
It looks like a great way to hook it all up though!

yeah, definitely. i was debating between putting small grommets in, or just daubing some glue around in the holes

heheh... i was repainting it all anyway, so why not go the extra mile?

not the best pic, but you can sort of see how tight it is against the vest now:

Great job with the repaint, Brian! I love how your armour is metal, I'm sure that really impresses people when they start knocking on your suit as they pass by.

    thanks!

    it's 100% rattlecans...

the base yellow is rustoleum line striping yellow. the lighter green is rustoleum spruce green, the darker green is rustoleum american accents hunt club green, and the weathering is flat black and rustoleum camo ultraflat earth brown.

I would put some serious padding between you and those nuts/bolts. I don't know how good your bucket is, visability wise but I'm always falling over stuff when I've got my helmet on (although not as much as when I'm wearing my TK). You fall or take any kind of blow while wearing that and it'll require a dunk in a bacta tank ner vod.

I'm not worried about it... The suit is all metal. If I fall, I've already got plenty of hurting going on!
