I think you're off to a great start here Mardon ...

Don't be shy, give up your suggestions (if any) on how to further improve upon this most impressive piece if needed. This is an integral part of the suit that most people are too intimidated to approach (myself included). It's also a piece the Fett community has been in desperate need of .. combining accuracy with durability and ease of assembly. With all of our suggestions as a unit, we can all help this project along .. for the good of the many (I know, that sounded like Star Trek, so shoot me )

I'll be the first to step up to the plate here, with a couple if suggestions .. one artisan to another, and reserve my place in line for one of these when completed.

In final production, it might be best for weight concerns as well as durability .. to cast the rocket assembly in fiberglass. If it's hollow, it's lightweight, but stronger than a solid resin piece that can simply break in two if dropped or hit on a doorway.

The only other thing that sticks out to me, is that the main tank may be too large in diameter. But it could be distortion in tthe perspective of the pics.

With this pack cast in fiberglass, there is a possibility that it could be one of the most durable packs, as well as one of the lightest packs .. as light as a styrene pack in fact ..

Awesome job again Mardon!

The first thing I can see is the side pieces on either side of your main tank look too short, and too rounded on the end. Definitely on the right track!!

Here's what I'm talking about on my pack. It's not perfect by any means, but maybe you can see what I'm talking about.

VERY nice

How sturdy is it overall? Will they all be made the same way or is this a mockup to be used for some other kind of reproduction (casting, etc)?

If these become available in the future, I may have an interest as well

Hi guys!

There seems to be 2 threads on my jet pack right now and honestly, i dont know where to reply first :-)

First, I would like to thank Chris for graciously helping us to load these construction pics. Thanks man! :-)
I would also like to thank you guys for sharing your input and comments/suggestions.

Just like our MLC helmet, the above mock-up pics of the jet pack is constructed out of cardboard (illustration board) that acts as a basis for casting/molding in Fiberglass. The actual product would definitely be in FG.

Currently, this mock-up is being bondoed by my FG workers to smoothen out gaps & creases of the card before molding it. Its appearance now has greatly improved from what you see above.

Yes, the jet pack would be 100% FG - very light & very strong. Just like our 1/6 scale vehicles. It'll be hollow inside whereby I elected to have an opening panel at the rear for anyone wanting to modify the inside....or make use of it like a locker for food & water :-)
Since different folks would be having their own preffered harness, this opening panel would help them modify it greatly.
Naturally, if after modifying you feel not having the option of the rear panel opening up - then just cover the edges with bondo before painting.

We plan to make the jet pack into 4 components - the body, the missile & the 2 ball thrusters. You could either glue this in position or make it dettachable for storage options.
I would preffer a plug-n-play option on my jet pack ;-)

Ofcourse, this would be part of our "budget Boba" series :-)

just to stress again, the weight of the pack is extremely important. the lighter the better.

Fantastic work there Mardon. I am definately looking forward to seeing this more as it nears completion. I really love the idea of the opening to use for storage. No more worring about where you put the stuff you buy at a con!

Another helpful suggestion for accuracy, perhaps it's not too late to fix.

The image below illustrates that the "Piano Keys" are off just a bit. As you can see, it appears the only problem is that the plateau where the double arrow "<-->" is, needs to be raised and widened just a bit to reposition the piano keys for a 4x4 appearance, instead of 3x5 in relation to the angle of the two plateaus.

This would greatly improve the appearance and bring it one step closer to perfect

Yeah baby!!! Mardon, this is looking awesome (as you know from my emails!!)

Chris, many thanks man for hosting pics!

I know I can't wait to hoist one of these on!!!

We'll be coming up pricing for these bad boys as soon as Mardon's got one done in FG and it's shipped- then we'll know total weight for the shipping costs.

Mods, can we merge the two threads?

Then we can start a list, Mardon's got #1, yours truly has #2,
, Chris is a lock for #3, and the list will go from there!

Man, this is just great stuff, finally get a job, and Mardon comes up with the jet pack I've been begging him for!!!

Hey thanks guys! We really appreciate all your comments & suggestions. Just wanna let you know that this project is a go (naturally because of all of you!) and molding will be done by next week.

And just to show you our appreciation - I'm giving off FREE chest armors to the first 5 guys who will sign up a strong interest thru Rex...how's that?!
Is this ok, Rex?
You can see the prototype of my chest armors over at the Armor section under the thread "Rex Armor".
I'll finalize pricing with Rex by next week & Rex will finalize total price once we get to figure out international shipping cost on this. Heck, I have to send one stateside, right? :-)

To answer some of your questions:

FP - muchas gracias sir for all the input - we'll try to incorporate those in the production run.

JK - it took me about 4 days building the jet pack in card. Armor took a couple of hours

MMM - give me a schematic of your 4 man canoe :-) However, dont be shock hearing how much this will cost you to ship internationally...LOL!

Guys, since i dont have an actual FG product yet, cant estimate the total weight. It would definitely be lite weight & I'm hoping somewhere between 3-4lbs. - hopefully :-)

Measurements - this is rough:
Height - 29" -31"
wide - 16" (no ball thrusters yet)

Hope this helps!

Free Armor! Free Armor! Free Armor! :-)

Okay guys, in order to be eligible for the FREE armor promo, you have to send your interest to Rex - e-mail or PM to him will do.

I am not counted as #1 on the list.....infact, neither should Rex be counted as #2 (quickly ducks under the table! :-)) - so if FP is interested then he is #1 & TK-Fett should be #2.
If all falls into place, then we still have 3 slots open.

Guys, I know you're a bit weary on pricing, but I promise ya its the lowest priced JP that we could provide with your preffered material of choice - FG.

Rex & i stand by our slogan......"Budget Boba"! :-)

Yeah baby!

Man, I am so jazzed over this project! From wondering "what to do for a Jet Pack??" to a soon-to-be genuine MLC jet pack!!

And, you lucky Fettheads will be getting Free armor?! Shooot, it doesn't get much better than that!!!

Man, first Mardon does a sweet helmet, then a Jet Pack, right afterwards armor, and he's working on Fett boots!!

You know, none of this would have happened if I hadn't had an interest in 1/6th scale military stuff...and lo and behold! A chance meeting a few years ago has led to this, the threshold of Fett...or, Budget Boba stuff!!!

Kinda neat how things work out.

take care all,

-Rex

3lbs and fiberglass! Excellent! It is great to see so many people taking the leap and making their own stuff. I guess not everyone can make all the parts, so they need someone to buy from, and it's nice that there are enough people willing to put the time in that the finished products are getting better and better. I think that was a run-on sentence, but that's ok. Great job! I can't wait to see the finished thing. Also, I think it's great about the fiberglass rocket part. Resin stuff is too expensive and fragile to carry around at a con...I would be very sad when it broke.

I'll send you pics of the completed pack in a day or two as I still will integrate your suggestions.

Ugghhh....it still hurts me to see those shredded cardboard pieces when my mock-ups get released from their molds. Imagine seeing one of my 1/6 scale tank mock-ups which I labored doing for a month gets shredded in just a day!
Well, atleast we got a mold of it :-)

I was in the mall yesterday & saw those camel back packs - thought it would be possible to put the pack inside the jet pack & just make holes/slits for the shoulder & belly straps to come out of......and maybe a small hole to route the straw up inside your helmet for a drink? LOL!
Gosh! the ideas that enter my mind! :-)

I like how you think, Mardon!
A jet pack with enough extra space for refreshments...
A jet pack with extra storage space for just about anything else for that matter..
A jet pack with a covering access panel for said extra space...
AND a jet pack that's all relatively lightweight to just about every other non-papermache jp out there...
This is becoming a dream come true, and it just keeps getting better and better everytime I check this thread! You certainly have my undivided interest on this!

Okay, pack still being cleaned - I did get to weigh the pack with missile attached (no ball thrusters) and it measured 1.25 kilos or about 2-3/4 lbs. With ball thrusters attached, I'm guaging maybe 3 - 3.5lbs. Hopefully, it all weights under 4 lbs total. I guess anything below 5 lbs. is good?

I did free reign on designing this pack & having the opening panel at the back made me think if this would be better for you guys - but after thinking awhile, decided to integrate this opening as it would be helpful for you guys adjusting whatever harness you guys preffer. Naturally, if you decide to keep this opening panel workable, then you can put stuff in since the whole pack is hallow anyway. Food, sandwiches, drinks, camelback, con stuff, toys, whatever. Yes, its not accurate with the panel, but it gives you something more. Anyway, you can keep it shut for good & just bondo the edges.

I cant wait till it gets done so I could throw pics to anyone who can upload here.

My pack was finished yesterday, but due to the suggestions of both BP & FP to increase & widen both panels along the main chamber, so we had to integrate that as well.
"Piano keys" now will be 4x4....right, Chris? ;-)

My pack adopted the modification thru bondo, so naturally due to the new modifications it would need to be molded once again. Now, I have 2 JP molds - for which you guys can decide which style you preffer :-)

Because of the bondo modification to my own JP, we finally got the total weight of my pack to 2 kilos or 4.4lbs. Do take note that since we will be doing another mold of this new modification, the production JPs would be a lot lighter than my own JP.

My workers finally promised me completion by today, so I'll send pics of my completed Fiberglass JP to some folks who are interested.....and maybe they could upload to the board for everyone to see.
That'll be by tonight - promise! :-)

That's awesome Mardon, glad you're willing to incorporate the mods Seriously look forward to this pup. Shoot me the pics when you're ready ..

Its DONE!! Finally!

I've sent 10 all new pics of the completed FG Jet Pack to FP, Rex and to VC of SD.....hopefully, one of 'em could upload the pics here!

I'm all excited about this & even bought a hydration (Camelback) backpack to fit inside the JP & maybe use its straps to act as harness.
Anyway, pics of those are what i sent to the guys - so hope you get to see it soon!

To BP & FP - thanks for your suggestion/reccomendations on making the design more accurate. I hope i didnt let you guys down. :-)

Mardon -

No let down here You did an awesome job !! I think the revisions look great. Overall, I believe that you've achieved the perfect combination between accuracy and overall usability because of the weight. Under 5 LBS is simply amazing. Until now, the lightest Jet Pack (vacuum formed) has been around 8-10 LBS, not taking into consideration some of the stryrofoam packs of course. You'll make a lot of people happy with this one Especially considering that this will be the "ONLY" jet pack that could "BARELY" be labeled "Some Assembly Required"

Bravo

One more suggestion might be to square off the slots at the base of the rocket (the neck base) and put a backing behind the holes, unless that's up to the end user.

Amazing Mardon. Couple q's though where did you get the camel pak and if you use it as the JP harness how will you secure it inside so that the JP doesnt pop off the removeable panel?

If it's got that big hole, where could I put my velcro? I don't like using a harness.

Wow Chris.....thast sure was fast! I just sent you these pics a few hours ago! :-)
Man, I cant thank you enough for helping us thru this project - you & the others have done so much, that i'm speechless :-) Kudos my friend! :-)

Actually, the original mold has those back holes covered - i just told my workers to make holes 'coz they look COOL! :-)
Ofcourse, i could have them cover it with a flat sheet of FG.
Still, the holes look cool, ya? :-) Nonetheless, the production is closed - so individual folks can do the holes to their own pack or not.

Tk-Fett - stuff the camelbak inside, close the panel with screws...and you're off! Just make sure you cut a slit on either the panel or around it for the harness straps to exit from.

Lisa-Fett - in those pics, you'll notice a flat panel ( a thin sheet of fiberglass panel cover) - you could either glue this shut or use screws to bolt it down, then use your velcro.

Folks, before any confusion arises - in those pics you'll see a thin Fg panel - that is the cover for the back portion or rather the opening panel. Like i mentioned earlier, you could either glue this permanently or bolt it by using screws to allow it usable.....the decision is all up to you guys.
I just provided the option for you guys to decide what you wanted your JP to do - just a JP or something that you could place inside is just an option.
Besides, since most of you either use a velcro or any kind of harness - then I thought it best to make a separate panel that you could either glue permanently or make it removable to make changes if necessary.

PLEASE, dont think there is a gapping hole at the back of the JP - I may have not shown it properly in the pics above, but it does have a panel opening/door.
Once installed - the JP is definitely covered :-)

Pic #2 of the completed JP above shows the contoured flat panel below the jet pack.
This piece was molded as part of the back of the JP as the JP has 2 contours - I just had my workers cut the center section to act as a removale panel.

If anyone wishes not to have this option, then we wont cut the center section - infact, that will make it easier for our workers :-)
Just thought you would appreciate the option ;-)

The camelbak pack I bought is a local brand - they actually call it a "hydration pack(?)" where you can buy a separate plastic 'bladder' that you can fill with drinkable liquid - water, juice, coke, beer, etc & the pack has a special lining inside to keep the temperature to your liking. It also comes with a long straw & mouthpiece.
Fact is, the bladder pack is more expensive than the backpack :-)

Hi again everyone!

Thanks for all the support & kind words on our JP! :-)
Currently, this project is in Rex's hand, so kindly PM or E-mail him your interest. No worries, no commitments necessary till we get a final price:-) He could either e-mail each interested person or inform this forum.

I'm still waiting on Rex's order for his own jet pack for us to guage how much international shipping this would cost to eventually guage the total cost. Maybe it would be even cheaper if I can send 2 or more JPs in one box - it all depends on how many orders Rex could get.

You could also ask Rex if he already filled the 5 strong interest from folks eligible for our "FREE" armor promo - it sure wouldnt hurt to ask him about it :-)

I also got some interest on the "hydration" pack I used - which is actually an experimental idea that just struck by accident. If however you are also interested in this, then I could take more pics of it or maybe buy for those interested.
I'm not quite sure what kind of Camelbak/hydration packs you guys can get over there, but if I could help you guys out even more - then just give me a buzz :-)
Frankly, I know that these packs could work - and some have even used these specifically while trooping - heck, you gotta drink, right? :-)
Making it useful is ofcourse up to each end user.

Phew, I'm relieved about the hole.

For me, shipping within the US was $20 with insurance, unless the pack could be shipped in smaller pieces as a kit. As it is, even with the rocket off, it will probably have to be an oversized package, and you have to pay a lot extra for that.

Hey, I'M INDEED INTERESTED AS WELL!!! Even when I have a Fiberglass Jet Pack as well, that I haven't even finish due to a lot of mods I'm making to it. But...DUDE!!! That's an amazing work, specially that you started scratch built, casted, molded,...and weights less than 8 pounds???

Keep me posted for this baby. I'd even surrender the one I have for one of these, cause they look even easier to put together.

Okay everyone,

Sorry for the delay in posting. I've been swamped in work...

Here's the skinny, best as we have right now.

Jet Pack- $280-
Shipping still to be determined. As LisaFett said, oversize packaging will cost more to ship. We are working to cover this potential extra costs. As such, I can only guesstimate that shipping from Mardon to me, to everyone else will have a range of $20-40 extra. Until we get one out of the mold, packaged, weighed, then I can get exact pricing.

So, if you could just bear with us for a couple of days until we determine the above.

Payment will need to be in the form of Money Orders. We are getting our house refinanced, and I can't have our credit card have a slew of paypal stuff coming in and out. Please understand.

And now the Jet Pack List- The first five will receive a free set of MLC Boba chest armor. The next ones on the list will be having their jet packs made at the same time as the first five. All in the same run...

Please PM me for all orders and questions.

1) Fettpride
2) TK Fett
3) Defiler
4) Nerf-Herder
5) Journeyman Protector

Next-
6) Mirax
7) Seeker
8) Slowmo
9)Squirk

The pack will be like MLC's helmet, smooth, a few parts to glue, then paint!

Under 8 lbs? We're shooting for 4, 4 1/2 lbs!

take care all,

-Rex

*** With the #5 space opening up, everyone has moved up a notch, giving JMP a FREE set of chest armor!!

Congrats Phil!

I'll check and see if it can be squeezed in on this JP order.
I don't want to hold up the Jet Packs though, so if Mardon, can't get it done, it will come in with the next batch.
If so, I'll take care of the shipping...

take care,

-Rex

I'll use actual US Priority Mail rates, Confirmation Delivery, Insured Mail. Unless someone wants FedEx, UPS, etc.

I don't know what Domestic shipping will be, but I will tell everyone as soon as I get a JP in my hands. I can handle the domestic shipping via PayPal for everyone's convenience.

Update:

Well it seems the response has been good according to Rex, so here's a litle bit of update:

My own JP is currently being molded anew to capture the new mods....all production JPs would weight 4- 4 1/2lbs or lighter. I'm also in the process of hiring more workers to do just SW props, as my regular workers are already head high on doing vehicle orders.
Hopefully, production will start in the next 2 weeks and I'm looking at 3-4 days to make each JP.
To those who have ordered, if you have any special requests like having the back panel door or not, making holes below the missile base, etc. please indicate it with your order to Rex.

Once I get my own JP, I'll attach the experimental hydration pack I bought & put it on a mannequin to show you guys & if there's any interest on the pack, then give me a buzz as I could buy for you & include it with shipping your JP.

BTW - someone convinced me to do a Jango JP - so if there's also any interest on this. LMK
Thanks!

If there's only a few interest, we might shelf the project indefinitely.

Merged: Merged: Jango Stubby Jetpack Signup Thread (With New Pics!)

Our friend Mardon & I are working on this & before we can go any further I am looking to see how much interest there is in an all fiberglass stubby jet pack. I need a commitment of at least 10 people to get this off the ground or it dies here. If you have not seen pics of Mardon's work just check out this thread http://tdh.prop-planet.com/viewtopic...c=4738&forum=6

It will be constructed in the same method as the one Rex is offering & should weigh in around the 4lb mark. Price would be comparable as well. I have spoken with Rex & we have agreed that since I focus on Jango stuff, that me working on this project with Mardon is only natural. The pack will also be designed to work with the new harness system that I am offering.

Again, this is just to see how much interest there is. A formal sign up thread will be posted when all details are worked out. Mardon is available for questions as well.

This will be already assembled. The only thing that will need to be attched are the thrusters & probably the nose cones just to make it easier for shipping. It will be very much like the classic that Rex is handling.

Folks, kindly help us out & send reference Jango JP pics to Vince so he can collect & send it to me. Its really not a biggie in regards to details as compared to Boba's JP....but just to be on the safe side :-)

From the preliminary looks of it, the 3 missile tips would have to be permanent for durability (molded as one with the main body) while the thrusters would be a plug-in option.
Rear panel is still up in the air & would depend entirely on Vince's harness that he's sending. Maybe there will and maybe there wont....

A quick update here as well. The classic JPs are being pulled starting this week & one of them will be the donor for the stubby design. I am in the process of collecting reference material for the different details but there are not too many pictures of this pack. If any of you have some great detail shots, please post them here so we can get the most accurate JP possible. I have also sent Mardon a harness so he can incorporate attachment points into the design. I'll keep you posted as progress is made in the coming weeks.

Does anyone have a good ref. pic of the
missle vent on Jango's jet pack? I'm trying
hard to sculpt out a nice one to make a mold
for and I keep seeing the pictures of it
from just one angle (over the top of the
pack facing out). Any help finding a good
ref. pic would be great!

Thanks guys!

Yup, there are established prices Jedi-Bob!

The jet pack is $280,w/ shipping from Mardon to me at $40-
So, it costs $320- to get it from Mardon to me.

Five jet packs get put into a large wooden crate on their way to me. Then I buy sturdy boxes, packing material etc. They are shipped (unless otherwise arranged) US Priority Mail, Confirmation Delivery, Insured.

As soon as this crate arrives, I will know the final, final domestic shipping charge to everyone. I will PM those who have paid, those on the list, as well as posting the final total costs.

Whew!

By popular demand...The jet packs will come w/ the thrusters hollowed out, a removable backplate, and the grill thingie (aaugh! I can't remember what it is...exhaust?) w/ the area between the slats cut out.

The jet packs will require very little effort to prep before painting. As with the MLC Helmet, little to no sanding is required. Just glue the thrusters on, attach the backplate to your specifications- (screws, velcro, etc) and paint!

It does not come w/ a beacon. Again, by popular demand, most were getting BKBT's light-up beacon to install anyway...

To get in on the next batch of five JP's, send in your payment as soon as you can. Who wants to wait any longer for a jet pack?!

take care all,

-Rex
