Metal Gauntlet buildup using WOF templates

These are my metal guants (the right one for now) I'm making using the WOF plans. I announced it in the Propbuilding forums but since I've progressed I'm going to keep a running thread here. Wickedbeard is my inspiration for these.

I know they are not completely accurate but I had to settle at certain points since it already took me over a week to get to this point. I will also have to clean up the excess Goop and J B Kwik as well.

    Thanks for looking!

Re: Metal Gauntlet buildup using WOF templates

Thanks for the comment! I will hide the seams with JB Kwik. When it's sanded down it appears a grayish color and blends somewhat into the metal. I began that process last night and will finish by tomorrow.

When all the seams are smooth enough I will probably mist them with some metallic paint just to further blend it in. I've already sanded the heck out of these with fine grit sandpaper and 000 steele wool to get them ready to for assembly with Goop. Hopefully the spraypaint will adhere to the sanded surface.

Then I will mask the silver areas I want showing through with rubber masking fluid and primer it with Rustoleum auto primer. Then I will probably start the left gauntlet. eventually they will become ESB gauntlets. Thanks for looking!

Very nice work. It still amazes me to see you guys work with metal. No one here in Oz has ever attempted this. Look forward to the finished product mate.

Thanks! After seeing Wickedbeard's new set of ESB guantlets he made I am awestruck. I hope mine eventually look that good.

I will be working on these a little more this weekend and begin the left guantlet soon. Take care all!

Re: Metal Gauntlet buildup using WOF templates

    Hey guys,

I don't have any progress shots yet but I'm almost done with both guantlets now. I've beem filling up open seems with JB Kwik. It sands down to a gray color and fits in with the silver of the metal. Anyway my post today is about this primer I found.

I think it goes on clear over metal. I wanted to primer over the metal to fill in any small pits but I did not want to lose the swirly marks over the metal. I wanted those details to show through when I painted these up. Has anyone ever worked with this? Let me know. Thanks!

It's as strong as anything else. It''s supposed too be as strong as metal itself... at least that's what the packaging says. I can't seem to pull any pieces apart once the product has hardened.

Great project. What is the material? Looks like ductwork metal. How thick is it? Are you worried at all about the total weight once they are done?

christssoldiers ... I used some 19 guage aluminum sheetmetal for some parts and for the basic curved shape of the guantlet I used those aluminum(?) vent tubes that stick out of the hot water heater. I cut it using snips and a dremel with a cutting wheel. Thanks for looking!

Re: Metal Gauntlet buildup using WOF templates... Update! 3/11/09

Hello all! This is the left gauntlet. I know I messed up the top part. Unfortunatly I left the glue to dry overnight and realized I goofed and slid it down too low over the base. I think I can cut off the top and reglue to a new base.

    What do you think?

Re: Metal Gauntlet buildup using WOF templates... Almost done!

I got off track for a few weeks, then I saw Wickedbeard's most recent ESB gauntlets he did and I said I had to get moving. So in one evening I finished sanding, priming, painting and weathering. They are not complete (flamethrower) and some more painting is required (the right guantlet). The green paint is rustoleum moss green. Its all I had around and I was impatient. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

    Thanks Wickedbeard!

Hopefully I will be able to finish these up during the weekend. I noticed that I made the openings for my hand a little too tight. My only concern is that they will snag on my new GBH gloves. I'm thinking that when I'm done I may coat the inside with that spray on Plasti-Dip. That should also help reduce turning while on my arms.

    Thanks for looking!
