    3 Weeks Ago - Apr 3, 2015, 5:29 PM - WoF Gauntlets Templates, am I that stupid? #1

    Hey guys...

So I printed the templates, got my sintra, and ready to get cracka lackin...but the templates...they make no sense to me, and don't contain instructions of any kind.

How am I supposed to know where everything goes, and what are the dotted lines vs solid lines etc?

Also, how do you keep sintra from shrinking? I tried forming the lower half of the gauntlet, and my two pieces that matched perfect prior to putting it in the oven, no longer match...are nearly 1/2 inch smaller than the other.

Hey Triton, I've never made gaunts from scratch, but I have made a jet pack from WOF's templates. There is a bit of a learning curve.
I don't think there is a tutorial on gaunt building but I know others have posted their gaunt WIP here in the forum. Sometimes its easier to google searching the info you seek, the google search will bring you back to the right thread her on TDH. Hope this helps, don't give up.

The WOF templates are great, but they require an understanding of how the shapes fit together that you can only get from studying reference pics and other builds. Also, the thickness of your material will change the way they fit together. There is some trial and error involved.

Yeah I totally understand that...but that doesn't answer the question really. He has solid lines in the center of a pattern, dashed lines etc....what does all that mean?

And believe me, I've exhausted my Google-Fu...which is at a Professor level, and haven't found much to answer my questions...which is why I'm here.

My sintra is shrinking horribly when I try to make bends, which as I understand it, isn't supposed to do.

I think that the straight lines you fold the dash lines fold and match up to other dash lines to connect the pieces. Hope that helps.

Yeah, I think you're right about the dashed lines meeting up with each other.

Ahhhh. Ok. That certainly helps. Thanks guys. What about shrinking sintra? Any way to stop that from happening?

If his gauntlet templates are anything like his jetpack templates, the dotted lines would indicate an edge behind the closest viewed edge.
Like with an image of a 3D cube, the front edges, or visible edges, are solid lines. The rear edges, the ones you wouldn't normally be able to see, are usually shown as dotted lines.
    I dunno, though...

I'm about to start on my gauntlets and have yet to check out his templates!
His jetpack templates are great though. Really quite useful.

I haven't looked at the templates, so this could be completely wrong. The lines you describe sound like mountain and valley folds. The solid ones would be the mountains (folded like a mountain peak) and the dotted lines would be Valley.

Ok, I took a look at them. The green dotted lines look like recessed areas, the blue dotted lines look like folds. Now I remember why I didn't scratch build gauntlets. These are not for the faint of heart.

Well...there have been a ton of people who built these to great effect, I consider myself an above average maker, but I can't make heads or tells out of them.

Im starting mine now as well in between doing painting commissions..honestly i think there is a few ways you can do it. Im using all styrene sheet, so i cant really fold the pieces. Im cutting and gluing them togther with an added tab of thicker styrene or "corner braces" . I didnt really have any issue figuring them out because ive been looking at these gauntlets for years. I feel they are pretty straight forward shape wise when you know the gauntlets well.

Im also modifying the templates, to make them more accurate. Similar to the Jetpack im also currently doing lol. My approach isnt the normal though, so not sure how much help id be. For example, the whipcord housing..its made to be folded into the box type shape. Since im using styrene i can't fold it from one piece so i printed the templatre twice. One i cut out the top and bottom of the houseing out if 1/8" styrene. The other i cut the sides front and rear out of .030 styrene. i will then assemble it like a model.

I wasnt going to put up a build thread, but maybe i will. If it helps one person its worth the effort.

As for the shrnking sintra... that i dont know. I havent used sintra as of yet.

A build thread would be immensely helpful...if you were so inclined to do so. =)
I'm not as versed in the parts of a Fett costume as most of you guys are. I'm not looking for a 501st costume, I just want something that looks fantastic to stand next to my WIP HIC.

    Hey Triton,

I've been working on ESB scratch build for a while now. I just now decided to post my progress (literally about 20 min ago, in this same forum: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/e...h-build-52143/), and I saw your post here, so I thought I'd reply. I'll hopefully have my full progress up within a few days. Anyway, I'm doing mine with cardboard as a base (so I can't speak to the sintra issues), but the concept of the templates should be more or less the same. Some of my pics may help, but if not, I can try and provide more detail...

I just started mine tonight, and added it to my old thread that i never finished lol. Im also modding my templates to match the cervantes gauntlets as closely as possible. The WOF templates are a great starting point, and if your not going for uber accuracy, they are great as is

Here is my thread so far..
    http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/d...updates-45427/

Also Malaxor's thread is looking great so definitely check his out. His look more like they could be used as is..mine are a little "half-fast" because i know im going to make adjustments with some bondo, and take molds from them.
