Magnets for Gauntlets

I use some long thin rectangular magnets that are polarized so that they attract each other along the thin edge instead of face to face. That keeps them from taking up much room in the gauntlet. I have been using them for years and have had no issues. I get all my magnets at kjmagnetics.com but there are lots of other sites too.

Yeah i would think longer magnets, more surface area.

when magnets hold they only hold in 1 direction...so they can slide laterally and as soon as they do so they have no attraction....after that you have nothing but gravity working and they fall to the floor and have a bad day,

Make sure you're using rare earth magnets, those suckers are strong, and I agree with the longer ones for more surface area, here's some pics of mine, I have added another set to each gauntlet for added hold, but I've never had an issue, these suckers clamp shut and I've got to pry them apart with gusto to get them off. The other thing you might want to consider is a hinge on one side so the shells cant slide sideways on each other and slip off, just a suggestion.

I think if I had a hinge on the one side they would work fine. These are rare earth ones and are N52 which was one of the highest in the range. I think fighting the shear seperation will be an issue. I am going to play around with them this weekend. I am going to add ABS or metal tabs to each one on opposing sides which will eliminate any side to side seperation ( I hope). Was considering trying that with Velcro as well.
I know the simple ( and seemingly most common) way is hinging them but I really prefer a smooth look if possible. The dual internal hinge would work and I bought 6 ft of it so that may be my ultimate path as well.

I should add that I use a hinge on one side and the magnets on the other. With that setup and the strength of the magnets I use there is no accidental seperation of the gauntlets.

I was just downstairs staring at them and think the tab will help. I am going to make a opposite side piece that the tab will slide under/into with a bit of tension on it to keep it in place. The people at Lowes must think I am up to something when I go in and just wonder the isles looking at random things for ideas lol.

I'm not sure velcro would work since there is very little squeeze to the gauntlets to remove them once attached- I would love to use it if I could. I installed the tabs on the inside of the left one. Maybe I could put velcro on the one side and lock it with magnets on the other. The more I played with them , the more I was envisioning a slide lock type system with or a tolerance fit locking dowel. I was thinking an offset mounted L shaped male piece on the upper with a channeled box female lower to lock into. That would eliminate side to side and one direction of movement completely. Kind like this in a way Buy Hafele No-mortise Bed Rail Fittings, Set of 4 at Woodcraft.com
Doing it like this works for very few people. I tried it once, but if you want your gaunts to fit sng any movement will pop them open no matter how strong your magnets are. Belive me i tried lol

This will work for gauntlets with vac'ed bottoms, or full vaced shells. I used this method and they DO NOT open and i wear mine pretty snug. Full resin or fiberglass this wont work because you need to be able to flex the bottoms and/or top to open/close them.
I like my gaunts to open/close from the outside, so the inside side of my gaunts is glued since these are full vac'ed. I overlapped top ove the bottom, but you can do it so it sits flush using a "tab" glued on the inside.
Ok so what i did was i glued 3, 3/8" X 1/8" thick magnets in 3 places (2 on the left gaunt) like so:
then i made 3 strips of 1/2" wide X 1/8" thick plastic, drilled a slightly larger than 3/8" hole in each on one end, and then glued a 1/2" square magnet on one side of the hole. I also bent the strip a little to conform to the curve of the gaunt. Essentially this will allow the strip to lock onto the round magnet. i put the strip on the magnet as if it was closed and then closed the gaunt and glued the opposite side down.

That is a really cool method and would accomplish exactly what I am trying to do. I'm stopping at another hardware store today to look at random stuff since I couldn't find anything at Lowes that caught my eye with the exception of these hidden mirror hangers. I added tabs to the inside of my MOW gauntlets so I have a few different things in mind.

I have worn these gauntlets a dozen or more times now with no issues. My biggest issue in the beginning was the magnets coming loose from the gauntlet no matter what glue I used. So I made posts attached to a piece of ABS and plasti welded it to the gauntlet .
Now my magnets are removable and held down with screws. Very tight and strong magnets. I have a set at the top and bottom of my gauntlets and used hinges for the other side.
Once again, my goal on my complete build was nothing to be permanent. I always want the option to disassemble. I can replace these magnets with stronger or less stronger ones at any time.

Yes of course but I don't see why anyone would need to do that. Imagine in your mind they're on and you want to take them off.
With the hinge I just pull one side and hold on to them and lay them down.
With magnets on both if you pull one side off you have a risk of the other side (side you're not holding on to) falling down since the magnets aren't aligned anymore.
What is your concern with hinges? I'm curious.
