    May 12, 2015, 7:27 AM - Last Minute Costume Prep Advice? #1

In a couple of weeks, I'm taking my Boba to his first con. And I'm absolutely terrified he'll get damaged in some way. I know it's to be expected, even during the test fitting my cod cracked when I bent down too many times and this will be two long days surrounded by people, but I'd like to minimize the danger and damage as much has possible.

Currently, I'm most concerned about my scratch built jetpack. I epoxied the ever loving crap out of the thrusters, but given the awkwardness of the positioning, I couldn't use my 'glue' of choice, fiberglass to attach the thrusters to the main body. In an ideal world, I'd use the bungee cord method I've seen here, but I'd have to cut up the pack to gain access to the inside. Also, the thrusters are essentially round metal curtain rail ends with sintra cones epoxied to the bottom with not much surface area for the epoxy to stick to. The only thing I can think to do is add some fiberglass to the inside of the cone, making sure to resin the bottom of the ball and edges of the cone together.

Also, I utilized magnets for the gauntlet closure, and I'm fairly happy with it, but I'm finding a flick of the wrist can open them up. I don't really want to replace the magnets, but I was wondering what kind of closure could aid the magnets to just prevent them from opening with the slightest amount of pressure. I never really understood the velcro idea; velcro requires overlap which my gauntlets don't have.

Finally, any con-going advice in costume? What to do? What to avoid? What to take with me (I have a feeling my pockets are going to be full of superglue, epoxy and batteries)?

I just finished my first con and here are a few tips. Bring a repair box with epoxy, duct tape, ect. Have someone with you because you will get stopped a lot for pics, they will be able to let you know someone wants a pic because you may not see them or hear them. Watch out for kids with light sabers, they will want to hit you with them.

I'm not sure which SE exhibit you based your costume on, but the AOSW exhibit definitely shows velcro closure. I always assumed people leaned away from velcro for other reasons, but that at least some of the originals used velcro.

That being said, you could epoxy a plastic buckle to the inside, as I have seen some others do.

Pace yourself. The costume can be uncomfortable after a while, so make sure you have a place to gear down if you need to. Avoid narrow aisles when possible to avoid getting bumped.

Youll learn a lot about the costume the more you wear it and figure out what you can and cannot get away with. Things will break, but definitely bring a repair kit for just such occasions have fun!!

Thanks, guys. I'm sure the over-enthused kids with lightsabers will be the most terrifying part of the con.
