JB Project/ Ammo Belt!

I've been trying to keep this part of the project a secret until I was further along, but I suppose I might as well show some progress pics!

As some of you know, I've made vinyl ammo belts in the past:

I've also created a tutorial on how to make your own:

After a few tweaks on the design (stitch width and flap corner sizing), I've decided to make Jeremy Bulloch's belt using the same process, but in leather. The base blocks are Balsa wood, covered in folded 1-1.5oz leather, with hand-stitched lacing.

I started with dying the leather, and applying a light coat of finishing wax:

I cut out the flaps and pouch covers:

The pouch coverings are wet, and stretched over the Balsa blocks, held in place with push pins until dry (then I'll glue them to the blocks).

The flap covers are wet and then folded. This make a clean fold on the edge of the flap (like the vinly original) instead of rough burnished leather:

Here's a teaser for the stitching...I had to make adjustments to the stitching groove for future flaps, so this is just a test/prototype:

Why hand-stitched? I feel I am able to keep the the stitch length more consistent with a 4-prong punch, as opposed to the industrial machines. More on that later...

The belt will be constructed the same way as the flap covers, except that I will use an industrial leather stitcher to add the lacing.

Some people have already asked if I plan to mass-produce these after the Bulloch project is completed. I may do so, however, the price increase over my former vinyl version will be considerable. :)

Enjoy!

Stunning!!!!

Man with the advent of the JB ESB suit, I could re-do all of the hard parts and a couple soft parts of my costume! Things have come so far in the past two years, it's just nuts. I suppose it's only fitting JB gets the best;)

Great work on the belt Eric!

Looks like you are doing a great job on the belt so far. Very nice leather color. I like hand stitching for the same reason you said. Keep up the good work.

Man, that looks fantabulous!!
So you use a multi-pronged punch to keep the stitching holes consistent, then hand stitch it?

Yes sir, a four-pronged punch!

I use a stitching groover to lightly mark a straight line (the original vinyl belt's stitches were above the surface of the vinyl, not grooved), and lightly punch the lacing holes. The low-weight leather is too thin to use full force on either tool. :)

I had the day off, so I commenced to lacing a couple covers:

A bit time-consuming, but I find that my lacing skills improved from flap #1 to flap #2. The end result is looking better than I expected!

There will be a MAJOR update Sunday night, one way or another. :)

I'm going to test a different stitching method, using a Bostitch machine (even after I said I wouldn't). If the stitch length prooves consistent, great, it will save a few hours of stitching. If not, no biggie. I'd rather hand-stitch them anyway!

UPDATE TIME!

As he usually does, my friend Marc proved me wrong by showing me that using a Bostitch machine would be as good as, if not better, than stitching by hand. He did in a matter of minutes what would take me all week. :)

Here are the progress pics!

I'm dying and folding the belt portion itself tomorrow, and hope to have the entire project (Velcro and grommets added) before the weekend!
