Interest: Girth belts!!! (CLOSED until 2nd run is completed)

Okay gents, decided I'd start an interest thread. This is a two part thread, so please read the whole thing.

(1). Spoke with HorseloverZ.com today in regards to doing a bulk order on Centaur real mohair girth belts to bring the price down (standard price is $17.10 + shipping). They need to know the minimum I'd be ordering before they can insure a lower cost. So the first part of this interest thread involves getting your first girth (or a spare) at a reduced cost. I expect no commitment until I get a price for you guys and gals.

(2). The second part of this is ,that once I have a price on the girths, I will also be offering the option of ordering these as "pret a porte'" or "ready to wear" girths. These will be stained (ROTJ, ESB, or custom colors), stripped of the buckle tongues on one side, and nylon straps w/ tongue grommets attached.

I'm not looking to make a living off of these, just trying to offer a hassle free girth option for people who want a "done" belt.

*be sure to include what size and color (natural/white or brown) you'd need. And also, whether you want a "done" girth and whether you would want it ROTJ, ESB, or custom.

    Belts cost set @ $70.00 + shipping....

    *Shipping prices in USD:

    single belt orders:
    US : $5.00
    Canada/Mexico : $11.00
    All other countries : $13.00

    2 to 5 belts:
    US : $11.00
    Canada/Mexico : $26.00
    All other countries : $43.00

    My paypal addy is:
    dsonik1@hotmail.com

(Please make sure you include your TDH screen name, full name, address, and that it is for either a ESB or ROTJ girth belt. If you are ESB, payment is an acceptance acknowledgment for the color in the Olympic Stains link as the proper color.)

If you need to call for any reason, feel free... 727-226-2689

The link to the actual girth is:

Re: Interest: Girth belts!!! (CLOSED until 2nd run is completed)

Just a heads up, guys. I sat down and did the math and it's going to cost me around $70 bucks to do my girth belt, all totalled. Thats belt (at standard price w/ shipping), stain, nylon straps, punch, grommets, etc.

So I'm gonna guess that I'll be charging between $80 and $100 for completed, ready to wear, dyed belts, shipped hopefully.

I'd be interested in a "done" ROTJ. Pant size is 38 at this point.
    Thanks for offering these!
P.S. I'm in no hurry at all since several of my parts are on order; some are even months away. Just want to get in on the ground floor of this run. Should be able to PP soon.

80 to 100 bucks??? Can you break down the price peice by piece? Love the idea but right now I'd be more likely to just stain the natural one I already have that I paid $15 bucks for.

    Re: Interest: Girth belts!!!

If you already have one un-stained, you could just mail it to me and pay return postage and I'd dye it for $20. But, honestly, if you just follow the tutorial that whistle8mp did, and I expounded on, you shouldn't have any problem doing it yourself.

I understand that ballpark price seems steep, but the belts, as it stand are over $25 shipped, plus the cost of the stain, the nylon strapping and having it sewn, grommets, and not to mention time. If I'm lucky, I'd make $20 off of each belt, for a considerable amount of work. Not jumping down your throat, by any means, but I think once you do yours, you'll have a better grasp of what it takes to do one of these. I think about the cheapest I've seen a used finished belt go for is $60.

Also, if you decide to do your own and run into any trouble, feel free to pm or call me and I'll try and help ya out.

No worries my friend. I totally see where your coming from on the price once I stepped back and looked at the big picture.

I'm also a bit confused on the whole "sewing" thing...is that sewing the indiviual strands to each other?

Splat, no worries, bruv. The sewing I'm referring to is actually attaching the nylon straps to the buckles on one side of the girth. If you want, you can get my number from the "census" thread Madrid Boba started, call me, and I'll walk you through it.

jebby, thanks a ton for the compliment, brother. You and I been trekkin down this damnable girth belt road together almost since the start, it seems. lol

    Re: Interest: Girth belts!!!

I'm not trying to make you mad with this post, but I don't think you should factor the girth belt's price as 'over $25' while adding up all your totals. As the first post states, you are gathering names of people who would be interested. With enough belts ordered at once you plan on getting a price drop on the initial $17.10 Now, if you are ordering them at once and they are being shipped to your house there isn't over $8 shipping PER belt. If they charge that high of a shipping rate ($8-10) and you order more than 10 belts, that is less than a dollar added on top of the $17.10 which should actually be lower do to bulk order. As I said, I'm not trying to make you mad or anything. You can charge whatever you want for the belts. There are a lot of ppl that need the belt and will pay whatever you ask, your work looks VERY good. But if you insist on breaking the prices down, think about all the details in effect. This goes along with my real question... if we request a pret a porte version through you via the bulk order, will our price be the actual horseloverZ bulk order retail price plus the adveraged out price per each belt from the one time original shipping cost to you, plus the shipping fee from you to us? I'm glad you are doing this, we need many people like you who can offer a 'ready to go' to people that want them. I'm into trying to scratch build my stuff as much as I can. Hope I didn't anger or offend you sir. Have a great holiday!

Sorry for the double post, thought of an idea. Dsonik1, what do you think about offering a third belt option? A 'kit' if you will, that has all the stuff you need in it to finish a belt. This way scratchers get to have fun, and you won't have to spend additional time on that one belt. Just a thought

OK, I'm somewhat obtuse... do we really need to find a tack store and measure or is that a pun?

I think he means for people that dont know their size it would be wise to fit a belt yourself, is there is a store nearby
Your waist size should be enough for him.

    Re: Interest: Girth belts!!!

I'm not sure how much the price is gonna drop, and the price range that I quoted is factoring in that they may drop the price a few dollars on the belt and that the shipping cost will be reduced. I could try to offer it as a kit, but would be hesitant to mail stain, not to mention I cant send every person a set of punch and grommet pliers. There is the option of just ordering the belt, as stated above, and then using the staining tutorial. That is completely up to you, and no you didn't offend me at all. I'm just trying to help people out. As I stated before, I'll be lucky to make $20 a belt for what equates out to alot of work.

As far as the sizing goes, I just need one of you bigger guys to find out what size you would wear in a girth. I would assume that a guy who wears a 38 in pants would use a 40 girth, but I being a soldier, do not deal in assumptions. lol

To give you a good reference on the pricing... Evolution wants $65 shipped for one of his budget girth belts..... This, is far from a budget belt.

Also, I need a couple of you guys help, if you will. I think I've got the brown sussed out. But I would like if at least a couple of you ESB blokes could stop by your local Lowe's and take a look at the Minwax water based stain samples. The color I'm thinking will work is called "Dutch Chocolate". I want these to be as perfect as possible for you guys and I could use some feedback.

good thoughts dsonik! Well, I figured people would already have the pliers, I think what most ppl would need to make things easier would be the grommets and nylon. I don't know, it was a thought. Either way I'm probably down to get a plain belt through you if you can get the bulk order I'll keep watching this thread for sure I wonder what the ppl at horseloverZ think.. did you happen to tell them what this was for? Lmao

HAHA! Yeah... at work I have 3 friends that I keep updated on as far as what I've been learning how to do/make for my costume ect ect. I hate when ppl over hear us and ask what I am talking about... Then I have to explain what it is that I am doing and they just kinda look at me.. lol As out-there as it sounds I am developing a working grappling hook for a gaunt. A guy over heard us talking about it and asked what I was making. I phased out the Fett part and simply said "im making a grappling gun" This guy would be the type to give anyone a hard time, but to my suprize he thought it was a cool idea and had additional insight on how it could be done. It started with a projectile idea, fallowed by finding the right kind of chord. Then someone opened there mouth about how I should get a winch... yadda yadda maybe one day I'll have something to show you guys. Back on subject.. go belts!

Couple of pictures, i do not own these pictures. Two pictures are courtesy of Alex Alva and Jason Miller

Here's some detail pictures from "Jeremy's Suit" and the real ESB one.
There is definatly some "Red" colour in it, which in my opinion looks much better then a full brown girth. However these girths are weatherd as you can see, making them look darker in these pictures.
It isn't really that different then the ROTJ girth, only that that one has a much "Bloodier" colour red.

    ESB shot:

    Dsonik1,

Iam still interessed in your girths, just wanna help you out trying to unlock the secret of the girth belt... (Maybe a new movie huh?)

Anyway, the "Dutch Chocolate" colour you reffered to, do you have any picture of it for reference? It would be nice to see what colours we come up with.

Just a note, I'm interested, but not definately in, as some real life stuff has come up, so if you do an "I'm in" thread with a solid price on dying and shipping, I'll know for sure by then. I just want to make sure I don't go over-extending myself and let you down or mess stuff up for the project or anything.
Thanks for taking the time for this. I have a girth, but the coloring dint work as planned. It's fine, but it IS rubbing off, which is very not cool and out here I simply can't find the stain needed, so I hope I can get in on this. lol

Does it shrink at all during the process? If so that would be a GREAT thing. I prefer to have it smaller and have the nylon straps do the job than have the problem I have now of it actually being too BIG. LOL

    Ok, I'm done rambling. LOL

No prob DP. If it does shrink, its not noticeable. lol If you have a size 30 waist (as do I), the size 34 girth will leave you with about 4 to 5 inches of spacing between the buckles when it's on, which is about perfect.

Still interested... I see you have me listed as "40?" up above... I wear a 38 jean size but if you need to bump it to 40 to make it look/fit right no worries.
Just curious, when do you think you'll start needing PP sent on these?
    Thanks again for offering this!

Not sure, yet. Wont know anything until I find out if horseloverZ is going to lower the prices on the belts. If not, the only thing I'll be saving on is the shipping, and prolly not by a whole lot. Once I can give you guys a concrete price and we get a solid on whether the brown stain I'm lookin at is right, I'll start taking payment from you guys.

To give you an idea on how girth sizing works.... I wear a size 30-31 pants waist, but I wear a size 34 girth and it still leaves me about 4-5 inches of space between the buckles.

    BTW - List updated.

Very awsome! Thanks alot, man. I appreciate the info and taking the task.
Once you find out, be sure and let me know the shipping cost to Abbotsford, BC, Canada and I'll be able to let you know for sure 100%.

    Thanks a ton, Woody.

I picked up the nylon strapping, today. Still sussing out the eyelets. And my seamstress will be charging me around $6 per pair, to sew the straps in the way I want them sewn. Hopefully Monday I'll have my straps sewn, get the holes punched and burnt, eyelets in, and some finished pics up for you guys.

Cool, smallest available is size 34 (they measure 32 inches from buckle end to buckle end). If you have a 30 - 32 inch waist in pants, a 34 girth is what you need. If not, lemme know you're pants size.

hey guys, for those of you doing ESB belts, i went by Lowe's this morning, and spoke with Sonik while there, and i really feel that the Antique Red is the color to go with for ESB...the Dutch Chocolate is just to brown...i honestly believe that there is a hint of red in these belts, and the Antique Red looks spot on...if anyone would be interested in going to Lowe's to see for yourself, make sure to look at the WATER BASED STAIN, in MinWax brand, and look at the Antique Red piece of wood there...thanks!

I agree on the hint of red in the belt. There is definatly some of it in it, no doubt about that.
Now to take Jeremy's costume as an example, on his girth it clearly shows the "redness" of the girth belt. As FettDad says i also think it would look loads better if it had the red in it. Also most reference pictures show it very clear.

Maybe it seems a bit brown from the weathering, thats how i feel about it

I too have seen the Antique Red at Lowe's. There is definetly some red in it. I think it looks better than the brown though. Just my 2 cents.

    Re: Interest: Girth belts!!!

LOL Okay guys. I cannot get the minwax in gallons, and buying buy the quart would make this ridiculousely expensive. So, I and Fettdad did some research and found colors in Olympic brand that will work, and as for ESB, are much closer to the screen color.

    Here's the link:
    http://www.olympic.com/stain_product...lors/index.htm

Scroll down to "available colors", click on "download color card", once you're on the pdf page change the size in the top bar to 100% and you will be able to see the colors and read the names more clearly.

    ROTJ = Copper Henna

    ESB = New Pilgrim Red

Once I get the thumbs-up from you guys on that ESB color, I will set the price, and begin taking payments. Thanks guys, I know it's been an ordeal, but I want these perfect, so you guys are gettin your moneys worth, or better.

I'm pretty sure they will be $70 plus shipping. Just still trying to get everyone's feedback on the ESB color from Olympic. Guys, I need your help to insure the color is right. If I can get that straight, I would like to start taking payments on Friday. Would also be nice to make this an even 20 belt run.

Okay, gents. I finished the straps on my belt. This is what I'll be doing to yours. The only difference, is that I'll be leaving a few more inches on the end, and including two extra eyelets (loose) in the box when I ship. This is just in case a few of you larger gents, need an extra eyelet. Comments/concerns?

Well, I may actually change my order to a ROTJ after seeing the pics. Looks hella good man! Plus it'd be kind of nice to have pieces of my costume made by friends. I think the final prices will determine it for me, and I still do like the idea of dyeing my own and doing my own straps... I'm torn at this point and it's all your fault!

    Re: Interest: Girth belts!!!

Well, the price will not exceed $80 plus shipping. Honestly, after going out and getting the eyelets and tools, strapping and such last night, that price is cheaper than you can do it yourself, by about $20 odd dollars.

Unfortunately, if you're wanting just the belt, you'd be better off just ordering direct from HorseloverZ.com, Cuase after I ship it to you, it's gonna end up costing you the same amount of money. lol

    Just lemme know either way.

    Morten, you're added.

*First post edited. Updated with belt price and shipping costs. I will begin taking payment as soon as the ESB color has been confirmed and approved by those requesting ESB.

If the ESB stain has not been agreed upon by Monday evening, I will take payment from those who have ordered ROTJ, as well as, those with ESB orders who have confirmed with me that they agree with the color Fettdad and I have picked, so I can start the run.

I would personally like to take the time to thank each and every one of you. I take it as a great compliment that you have ordered these from me.

    Thanks, D.

Daric posed a question to me in pm, that I felt pertinent to everyone....

Daric: " What do you think the turn around will be?"

Me: "Really just dependent on how quick everyone gets payment in to me. Then I have to put the belt order in to HorseloverZ (expecting 6-10 days until I receive them). Once I have them, I am shooting for a 1 week turn around time, or less. Rest assured, though, I will bust my butt getting these done and out to you guys. "

i think that has been thought, but take a look in the gallery, brother, at some of the screen shots in ESB...there is most certainly red in the ESB girth belt...and until someone from the movie, or someone that knows someone that knows someone, etc, tells us the actual color, all we have are the archives and screen shots...but sonik and i both agree that there is quite a bit of red in the ESB girth...

I've a picture which makes the ESB belt look brown, with no hint of red.

Is this a case of "Han Solos jacket on Hoth", in the film it looks blue, all the merchandise have it as blue, but in reality it was brownish?

I know I'm a novice but shouldn't you colour it how it is perceived on film?

    fil,

Indeed, but I went frame by frame with ESB on my 46" flat panel, and in every frame you can get a decent look at the belt, it has a reddish tone to it.

    Splat,

The gallery is back up and runnin.

Decided to start a Boba costume for the new year, so I'm getting in a little late...can I order a ROTJ, finished belt, size 35?

No problem bruv. Is 35 your pants size? The girths run 34, 36, 38, 40, and so on...

WOW This thread keeps gettting larger and larger. Congrats Sonik.
**I can say from seeing the belt in person that they look fantastic, and that there is a bit more involved in making them, than even Sonik lets on**
So they are definitely worth it, not that anyone needs me saying that to prove it (obviously) lol
