Horsehair Wookie Braids by Julie: Signup & Interest

Seven asked for red turk heads knots on his set, so I thought I would post a picture of them for all of you. I used suede lace.

Looking through the Star Wars Chronicles again, like I noticed the M.O.M. braids are the exact pre-pro 1 suit braids, it appears the ESB movie braids are the exact pre-pro 3 suit braids. They look the same in color and tie points.

They mounted the dark braid backwards though with the red tie on the back side of the suit. Why is this important? Because there's also a light blue tie on the side opposite the red tie (front side in the Chronicles pics).....and another blue tie towards the bottom of that braid. This would be on the back side of the ESB movie suit, and since there's barely any pics of the ESB publicity shots on that side, it very well could be on the movie suit and not sure if any of the ESB costumers around here noticed it before or not. :)

This is as close as they got before the final movie ESB suit, so all the armor is very close to the final weathering on the parts as well. The knees are exactly the same as the ESB knees, and if you look hard enough I'm sure other parts are as well.

*EDIT* - A friend just emailed me with the info I needed for the horsehair.

I did some ESB braid experimentation over the weekend.

I tried to dye some of the light blond horse hair gray as well as a different batch a more yellow blond. So far my first attempt failed terribly. I tried both experiments on the naturally light blond horsehair as well as on some that I tried to bleach. On the batch that I bleached, the hair came out a little more yellow with a very slight pinkish tinge. For the gray I tried using Color Charm Frost Ash, it added a slight gray hue to the unbleached hair. To the bleached hair it took out the yellow & pinkish tinge and turned it almost platinum blond. For the yellow blond I tried using Color Charm surfside blond. It turned the unbleached hair a dark dirty blond while it turned the bleached hair a lighter dirty blond.

I am going to try and get in touch with my hairdresser this week about what to try. In the meantime if any of you can give me some help/advice it would be greatly appreciated.

I'll try to have the pics of the experiment up tonight or tomorrow.

Side note - Thanks to Mr Fett for posting more pics of the ESB braids :)

Try using Rit Pearl Grey with hot water, salt, and laundry detergent as directed on the box. Caution DON'T use boiling water, just very hot, and I think your might find what your looking for.;)

Mini update:

I used Rit Golden Yellow dye on the light blond hair to turn it more yellow blond. I used one packet following the instructions for the stove top dying. I only kept the horsehair in th dye bath for 7 minutes. Then rinsed following the instructions in the packet. Pic below:

Here's a pic of the natural light blond hair laying across the more yellow dyed hair. For those that wanted ESB braids please let me know what you think.

I drew up a proportional (but not to scale) of what I believe the braids look like in ESB.

The Black braid is the only one that is actually looped. The blond/yellow braid seems to just drape. The gray silver braid does not go any further than the shoulder. It is attached to the top of the shoulder and hangs down.

(the taper in the braid is an illusion, it is actually straight)

This is to illustrate the layout (Direction is flipped in the movie).
