Horsehair Wookie Braids by Julie: Signup & Interest

I am offering a limited run of 6 sets of customizable horsehair Wookie Braids. They are hafted together as well as have the ends wrapped with artificial sinew. A set of 3 includes: 1 black, 1 white/blond & one brown. Each braid is ~40-42in in length. Please let me know the circumference that you would like for the looped braids or if you would prefer to have them not hafted together. Turn around time is 1 to 2 weeks, depending on my schedule. If you need them in a quicker timeframe please contact me first to be sure I can accommodate your request. If you have any questions please email me at gaslaveleia (at) gmail (dot)com. Please do not send me a PM, I may not see it for quite some time.

Cost: $30 for an un-looped set or $35 for a looped set including shipping to the US. International orders please contact me for a shipping quote. I ship Monday through Friday Fedex. Pricing is the same for the MOM set as well, unless you want the extra braids that are hanging down from the smaller black & white braid. Cost for the extra braids will depend on sizing & quantity.

Payment: Paypal only please. Once I have confirmed your request I will send you my paypal email address.

Please click on the link below the picture to go to a detailed gallery of the braids. If you would like a close-up of a particular braid or part of a braid please let me know.

    Wookie Braid Gallery

Customizing: I like to post progress pics so you can see what you'll be getting & it also gives you the opportunity to let me know if you want me to make any changes before they are shipped out.

    MOM Braids
: Question from the old thread in the Cargo Hold:

Quote: "Is it possible to braid the rubber bands as seen on the MoM braids?"

From looking at close ups of the reference pics, I believe that's a flat form of sinew and not rubber bands, however I'm not 100% sure on that. I can put 2 Turks head knots on there for you. There are pictures of the Turks head knot located at the end of the braid gallery.

Depending on how exact you want to be, I can tell from close ups of the reference pics that the white (blond) braid & the brown braid are synthetic hair wrapped in a black cord & not sinew.

Synthetic Hair vs. Horsehair: Either will last you a long time providing you care for them properly. If you don't either can dry rot, mold or mildew. I have been working with horsehair since 1998 and can vouch for its durability.

Care: If the braids become dirty simply hand wash them with a mild shampoo such as Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo. If you notice they are looking &/or feeling dry and dull, use a leave in conditioner like Infusium 23 which can be found at Wal-Mart or Sally's Beauty Supply.

Someone besides Stone Rook, posted an interest in a MOM set yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, I didn't get your username written down before the thread was automatically deleted from the Cargo Hold. Please send me an email or post again here.

    Thanks!

Re: Horsehair Wookie Braids by Julie: Signup & Interest

After much experimentation, here's the prototype of the black & white braid for the MOM set:

I've consulted 3 hairdressers and gone to a "braid" shop about this one. All of them gave me basically the same 3 answers: 1. It was multicolor hair. 2. The white was weaved (braided over) the black or 3. It was spot dyed/bleached.

I wasn't able to find multi colored hair. I tried weaving the hair in - that did not turn out well. Of course that was my first time trying to "weave" hair. So, I went with the spot bleaching method. It's a little time consuming, but so far has been the most promising. I am going to re-bleach the braid in the above pic to get it lighter.

I'm not 100% convinced though that the braid can't be done like the traditional 3 strand basic braid. I've looked through several leather braiding books and have not been able to find anything close. If anyone knows of a braiding book that has this braid in it or someone who is well versed in braiding horsehair please email me the info.

    Thanks!

It's very similar, except it's a round braid and not a flat one. I just ordered their "Braiding with Horsehair" book.

    Thanks for the lead!

    A quick update:
I received the horsehair braiding book yesterday. There are 2 possible braids that might work. I am planning on experimenting some with them this weekend. In the meantime, I've continued with the "masking" & bleaching. Here are a couple of progress pics - The first one is after the 1st round of bleaching. The bottom one is after the 2nd round of bleaching.

    Hi All,
My apologies in not updating recently. Between work & the holidays I have not had much free time the last couple of weeks.

Of the 2 braids in the horsehair braiding book that might be possibilities - one will not produce the right shape or pattern. The other braid has some promise. The only problem is that the only example in the book is a 12 strand braid. I'm working on learning this one, however with 12 separate strands it is proving rather difficult to master.

I am planning on bleaching the braids that I already have done again tonight. With some luck I should have some progress pics up tomorrow or Thursday.

Quick update. I re-bleached the braids again last night. I should have progress pics posted either tonight (after 8pm EST) or in the morning. It looks like each one is going to take 3 bleachings. For each bleaching I am having to leave the hair bleach on the horsehair several hours. To give you an idea how much different horsehair is to bleach than human hair this same bleach turns my dark brown (almost black) hair "bleached blonde" in about 30 minutes.

The braid in the top of the pic has been through two bleachings while the bottom braid has been through 3. A larger image is at the bottom of the Wookie Braid Gallery.

I'll be bleaching the 1st round of black/white braids tonight for the third & final time. These are for TK7602, Stone Rook & Ripcode. Hopefully I will have your sets completed and ready to ship by Monday January 8th. That's the plan at any rate

I am also planning on taking and uploading some more pics either tonight or tomorrow.

I completely finished the 1st black & white braid today. Bigger pics are in the gallery. The glue was still wet when I took some of the pics so it shows up in a few of them. When it dries though it's clear. I also posted some pics of the turk head knots for the set of braids that hang down that are located at the bottom of the gallery.

It appears through this pic and the pic in Julie's gallery, that there are 4 braids. There looks to be another small dark colored one next to the black/blond dyed small one. The thick blond one has maroon and black wraps, the thick brown one has blond and blue wraps. The mini black/blond dyed one has the mini dark one following it halfway down the front, then it appears to blend in with the black/blond one. Then it looks like the black/blond one ends with a turks head knot section, while somewhere down there part of it might wrap back upwards through the red wrap and then cross over and end up with another turks head knot in that section.

OK, I just look at my Boba Fett reference CD with the super close up high res pics of M.O.M. and there is definately 4 braids in that configuration I just mentioned. Also, all 4 of them are wrapped together with more black wraps right behind the shoulder armor.

    *1/14 update*
This got me looking, and it appears the M.O.M. braids could also be the ROTJ movie braids. The ESB and ROTJ "Special Edition" Bobas have different sets of braids, as does the AOSW exhibit suit. Looking through the Chronicles book at the 3 Pre-Pro suits, the M.O.M. braids are the Pre-Pro suit braids....the one with the "eyes or ears" drawn on top of the helmet. They are the only set that have turks head knots and the black/blond braid on it.

Here's the 4th braid I was talking about at the M.O.M. exhibit. Same small size as the black/white braid, but just next to it. It looks like it ties into the black/white one at the bottom in that picture.

....and like I said I noticed those M.O.M. braids are from the one Pre-Pro "Ears helmet" suit....

....and the configuration of how they are looped....

Close up of the various knots....

Re: Horsehair Wookie Braids by Julie: Signup & Interest

Usually I do. My work just happened to be closed today so I'm working on Boba stuff at home.
I got more pics if you want them.

Looks like the one with the turks head knots is a big loop tha has two ends coming off it with some wrappings a couple inches down, each with the turks head knot on it, kinda forming a figure 8 in that last pic, only the ends are separate. Somehow that other little thin dark braid connects along the side of it, and there is yet another "tail" somewhere linked in there.

The other two are just loops with one long section hanging down. So, that's 2 "tails"...the turks head knot one (black/white thin) also has 2 "tails on the bottom, and somewhere up the length, just another "tail" hanging off by itself?

They used it to attach the cape across the front of the costume from the typical position we normally see across the front of the body, and clip there.

i don't think i really got any good pics of them, but the biggest thing i noticed about the new braids is that the industrial velcro on my costume seemed to have no interest in sticking to them!

that has been the downfall of my last 2 sets of braids, so this makes me happy

Here's a pic of what I am calling the Extended Set. I've still got to glue the knots in place & trim up the sinew.

Looks cool! Are you doing another run sometime after this first set of 6 is done?

Is it just the lighting or is there a gray colored tail hanging down with the rest of the tails at the bottom on the left?

It's either a gray, blond or white one.....it looks different colors in the various pics I've seen of it. The blond one in the pic I posted last night of the extended set represents that particular braid. I'll try to get a shot of JP wearing all of the braids this weekend, so everyone can see how the set looks/hangs.

    Multipurpose post:

Paging BH795 & Loanstar: Please check your private messages.

If I do another run it won't be until after C4, also the prices would go up. Just the black & white braid takes about 1 hour to do & the 2 four turn Turk head knots take about 2 hours each to braid & completely tighten.

Another find on the "gray-ish" braid. It's just half a braid!!! It looks like one of the normal wide ones (like the blond and black ones), but chopped in half, with the thick end tied around all the rest of the other ones right behind the shoulder bell with 3 groups of black twine, then it loops around behind the arm and connects under the arm right about where the other mystery dark mini-braid connects to the full black/white mini braid, and the tail just hangs off that point.......

After looking at the pics close up I can tell you that the gray braid is made from synthetic hair by it's sheen & thickness. I have some dark gray horsehair I can use for that one, however it's some darker. I'll take some pics of it and post them for comparison this evening or tomorrow.

Paging BH795 & Loanstar: Please check your private messages and email. I need some confirmation from you both. If you are no longer interested please let me know. I have people on a waiting list for these.

If anyone knows either of these members, please tell them to get in touch with me about their braids.

If I don't hear back from BH795 or Loanstar by Friday February 9th, I will be removing their names from the list.

    Julie,

The black/white braid can be done using a 'herringbone braid'. Thats how I did mine.

    Sorry for the late reply...

Received my braids from Julie, and they are simply outstanding.

They really shine on the complete suit when it's all assembled.

I will post a pic once I finish building the dummy for the outfit.

If you haven't gotten on this yet, you should do so, by all means!

    :thumbup

The communication with Julie has been outstanding, and I liked the way she sent progress pics.....

    Quick update:

I am going to star bleaching the next set of black & white braids tonight. I'll have some more pics up by Sunday evening as well as have a list of people that are interested in the next run. My apologies in not being on here the last several days, I've been fighting a nasty cold.

On the pics of the 1st extended set you did, why was there that extra loop on the backside that looks like it should wrap around something, but just looks like it's looping air or something?

I had already finished the set before you had posted pics of the backside of that braid, so I went on the assumption that it was a complete looped braid. I'll have pics up of the new gray braid Sunday evening.

I won't be starting up another run until after C4. Once I get done with these I've got to work on my own C4 costumes.

If you want to me to change the set I am doing for you now, I can. I'm about 30% done with it at the moment. Those changes would be easy to make at this point. Your call.
