  1. Dec 7, 2015, 11:27 AM - Green 78 or Green 117 #1

I am trying to decide whats better for the finish on the helmet and armor, is it Humbrol grenn 78 or Humbrol green 117

    Thoughts

    117

    78

I used 78 I think it was on my last helmet and keep thinking its a little to light? but not as light as it shows on the index...

The 78 is still the best choice. You can add a touch of blue into it and it darkens it up just a touch. I add floquil light blue into my 78 and i like the result. Unfortunately i dont have an exact formula for it..i just add it with a dropper until i like the shade i have.

The 117 is way more yellow than it looks on the chart. I bought one tin once to see how it was, cuz the chart makes it look decent, but its very yellow, def not good

I'm really thankful that we have you guys here to tell us what colors to use. These look the same to me. I have to split window to tell the difference

I was thinking the 78, I have that on my helmet as the final color sometimes it looks pale green in certain light, I dunno, there is no real right answer as nobody actually knows what color green was used.

Is the ROTJ armor green and the helmet the same green shade then? it looks it,:? if so I will hit my new helmet with 78 and the armor with 78.

@2legit2fett they are close in match, but one of the other will make a heck of a difference.

I lay 78 first and over spray with 117

Yes I did take note of that, it's one of the question why I ask, as yours looks right with both colors on but on the other hand it looks good with just the 78?... did you yous both colors on the helmet and the armor?

This is perhaps one of the hardest things to do my entire armour and helmet is on hold because of this

I have half my kit painted by boba maker and 78 is too light and 116/117 is too dark/ not green enough

I have bought every single green humbrol do and still cant find the right shade

I found it in acrylic its actually grey, but i cannot find the exact same colour in enamel

I will post my results up when i have the time as i tested over 20 different colours and shade combinations

78 over 117 is a new one for me might try that one out

I painted my helmet many years ago and can't remember. I'll see if I can find the thread detailing the colours.

In my opinion the 78 on its own is too light. you need the 117 on there to give it depth

Listen to Superjedi. 78 is pretty good with the adjustments he's talking about. Then weather it down darker with some dark grey.

I did leave mine 78, indoor light it's perfect sunlight it's almost lime lol...

    I am thinking the 78 with 117 going by Ronin677 's results

@ Ronin677 what's it look like outside in the sunshine?

76 as a base under the 78 can work also the 117 is a great color for the chest center diamond

Right.......78 with 117 it is, that looks perfectly good to me

@ admin (if you are reading this) please can we have a sticky for a paint section for example ...[ Part - Paint brand - Paint Number.] Then with a vote for a good middle ground color guide? a sort of generic Fett guide?

i just add a couple of drops of light blue (floquil) to the 78. That dulls it down just enough. Its difficult to mist a color over a color and have it look right close up. Not impossible of course, but it is easier to just mix the paint. That said, Ronin's looks good in that picture.

this is the 78 with a little blue added in indoor light, no weathering2154:

    Here is that helmet completed:

I think Darth Vorhees is right. From memory my lid was just 78 with a misting over the top (you can probably see the shade difference between my lid and armour in my photo). I'd go with Darths advice though and use a blue or similar rather than trying to tone down with grey or black

Very interesting, so the helmet is indeed supposed to be a bit lighter than the armor? it looks that way in the movie to me anyway?

Great information here guys! I recently got a hold of an airbrush and I'm getting ready to start painting the chest and ab pieces. I feel like I should know this already, but should I use enamel or acrylic?

Yes it is. I use the 78/light blue mix for the helmet and the armor i now use MM panzer olivgrun/76 mix. (i used to use a 78/76 mix for the armor but found i liked this better)

You can use either one. Ive seen some great results with the acrylic enamels from humbrol, and Model Masters/Testors. I personally use regular enamels, but you can go either way.

Would be handy if they made Humbrol enamel spray paints in a can with all the color ranges they have in the little tins, would not need an air brush but only to weather things...

I like the 78 and 117 mix for armor and the 78 with bit of blue for the helmet .... what blue did you use?

I used floquil lightblue, which is the same blue as on the ROTJ jetpack
