Girth or Rope Belt Information

Put an all cotton girth in hot water and it will shrink a LOT! Best thing to do is put it in hot water, let it shrink then put nail in a 2X4 spaced the correct distance apart for your waist size, and clip either end of the belt buckles over the nails. This way the belt won't shrink smaller than you need it, as it dries.

I was searching around the Net and came across this place, 2nd wind 2nd hand.
I typed in Mohair Girth and look what poped up.
http://store.yahoo.com/2ndwind2ndhands/81476.html
It's a 14 strand Mohair Girth, New, with the correct buckles and it's 36" end of buckle to end of buckle. And only $16.50(plus shipping)!
I ordered one and got it a week later. They emailed me the tracking # and everything.
I'm so glad I found this that I HAD to share it with everyone. I wanted to wait until I got mine though, to make sure it was Quality and that they were lagit(not like ridersupply).
Just thought you all might want to know.
Now, I'm doing ROTJ and I've looked up alot of posts about Dye & paint on girths. Most say to soak in acetone.
Since this is a Light tan, and since I will probably Paint it not Dye it, do I still need to soak it?
Anyone?
Thanks,
Robert E.

If you were going to dye it, you would probably have to soak in acetone, but since you are painting it, I don't see where it would matter.

I've done both. I had an inaccurate Mohair girth laying around that I spray painted (for experimentation), and it turned out alright, except that I had to make sure EVERY little area was painted, and that it was even all the way around. Later, I got an accurate one and dyed it, and I'm much happier with that one. It was white, so I didn't have to soak it in acetone, but it took dye well. I used the liquid RIT dye (in the bottle, not the packet), and it took me about two hours of hand stirring and pouring to get it right (it was hell, but I just sat infront of the TV while I did it).

Nice find, and I hope that helped!

At buytack.com, they make girths in a wide range of colors. I just got my new one about a week ago, already maroon, for my ROTJ Fett.

http://www.buytack.com/products/saddle1/mc/english.htm

I've experimented with alot of methods of paints and dyes. They've always 'bled' onto my jumpsuits, especially on those hot days.

Bang for the buck, I'd go with the pre-dyed version. :)

Doh! :facepalm
You made a better find than I did. :p
In fact, I just ordered a maroon one for myself :D
Guess I'll have to sell the other one I bought. :)
And being able to select sizes, how great is that. No dyeing, no painting, no shrinking, and no rub off.
Price is slightly higher, but I agree, it's worth it.

Nothing like being out done on your own thread  ;)
Great find! :cheers

This is a GREAT example of why this Group Rocks!
Thanks,
Robert E.

On that 2nd source... which buckle is the right one to get? Also what do we think the difference in brown and Cinnamon. Last question what length does everyone get since it is supposed to have those little straps between the buckles?

i got the 'SS' (stainless steel) buckle.

As for colors, I couldn't help you. I'd give them a call, they are very friendly over the phone (they even phoned me when the order was delayed a week).

This is the best way to measure for length: Take a tape measure, put it around your waist, where the rope belt will go. It helps if you have all your existing pieces on first. From the final measurement, subtract about 8 inches. Order that size.

The buckles don't count in the length of the girth, so if you get a 36" girth, the buckles added would make it around 39" or 40" in length. That leaves about 4" for webbing.

I hope that makes sense... :)

I ordered mine form the same place a little while ago and I must definitely agree with batninja on them being friendly and reliable. They are very quick with getting back to you if there are any problems with your order.

I also ordered the 'SS' and it seems to be fine..

My advice is ORDER IT NOW. Maroon and some other colors are what they consider 'custom' colors and may take longer to ship.

For instance...

I ordered a maroon 38" SS girth on a Monday, and paid the $14 for 2-day shipping. When it didn't arrive on Friday (I needed it for a weekend gig), I E-mailed them and asked what the hold up was.

They E-mailed back (almost immediately) stating that the 'colored' girths were considered custom pieces and took longer to make/ship. They apologized for the delay as well as the misinformation (their website didn't say anything about custom pieces). They are looking to add that information to their website now.

Then they CALLED me and told me it would mail the following Monday, and I would have it Wednesday at the latest, in time for DragonCon. That made me feel alot better.

The girth arrived in the Denver mail...on Thursday...while I was stepping off a plane in Atlanta. :)

I don't hold it against the company, these things happen. They ARE a very friendly company to work with.

So, again, my advice is, BUY IT NOW. Don't wait until the last minute to get the girth.

EDITED
im planing to make my own girht, it's prety easy
you need 14 cotton strings 8mm or 5mm, i think 8mm its correct,
<img src=http://www.sodimac.cl/stores/sodimacvc/images/prod/FERRETERIA/Fijaciones/52383-g.jpg>
be sure the large of the strings are a bit more large, you know just in case, if you see any pic of girht you can make your own, they are sewn in 3 places ie:

-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------
-----------here----------here----------here-----------

also you need the two buckle belt :)
the first 7 wires go on one buckle and the second 7 in the other.

i have a quick question.....i ordered a brown girth from that link that was listed above and i didn't pay real close attention, but it came today and was natural color with brown crossbars....i thought it was gonna be all brown....i notice that everyone was talking about an all maroon one, so did i order the wrong thing or did everyone that ordered one have to dye it...i appreciate any help on this.

Yeah, when they called me, they reiterated, "do you want a solid color, or white with maroon stripes?"

I told them all maroon. I also told them that their website didn't exactly state those options when ordering.

I'd call them, and arrange for a new one to be mailed to you. I think they'll be cool about it...
