Sorry, no pics. No digital camera...yet. I will be able to get somer pics this weekend - St Patty's Day parade. I'll upload them this weekend.

All I can say for now is that the color is slightly darker than the picture in the Visual Dictionary. However, depending on whether I decide to wash it before the weekend (to remove excess dye), it may lighten just a little.

Isn't the girth supposed to be 100% wool? This is Washable 60% rayon/40% wool fiber. Will it take the dye?

Rider's Supply sells the correct girth. Go here: http://ridersupply.com/bridlespg4.htm

Item #509802

***WARNING***

I ordered a girth from these guys about two months
ago. I paid online with a credit card and even got
an order confirmation number. I never received the
girth, and when I called to ask about it...all their
customer service numbers had been disconnected...even
their fax number! I'm going to try and contact the
better business bureau to get to the bottom of this but
I would not recommend anyone ordering from them at all! :angry

I tried calling them and the number is not active. Figures, when I am all ready to order it too!!! Any other resources?

If you want a girth that's really close without dye, check mine out. Ignore the flash, it's a really much darker maroon.

I posted the order info here

I had the same thing happen to me with ridersupply.com. Been about 2-3 months now.. They never did charge my credit card so I kind of forgot about it until this was brought up here..... Not to worried about it...

Well..

I started the process today...

Dyeing1.jpg

and this is what a girthbelt looks like completely submerged in Acetone...
Dyeing2.jpg

And a few things I learned so far today. Use three, not two quarts of Acetone...trust me on this one. A cheap sterelite container is worth its weight in gold, and always have a good pair of ruber gloves handy...don`t ask.

Update: 24 June 03

I let the belt soak for five hours in the Acetone, rinsed it out very carefully, then stretched it out on a board so it would not shrink. It actually turned out a nice light shade of grey/ light brown. You can`t really make the color out in this pic, but now its ready to be spray painted. If I can find it, I`m going to use Krylon Satin Brown. More updates to come.

Update:28 June 03

I got the belt ready for being painted, taped up the metal buckles and I was all set.
Dyeing4.jpg

Then I sprayed it a couple of times and it turned out superb!!! Just the Jodo Kast brown I wanted. I have to agree 100% with Doug and DarthGoat....spraypainting it is the way to go, forget about dyeing it.

And this is what it looks like sprayed at the buckles:

One more project done. Jodo is slowly coming together.

good luck with it!! It wont shrink will it?

Once I get it out of the Acetone and rinse it down, I`m gonna stretch it out on a board and keep it there overnight to avoid it shrinking on me.

As someone who only uses acteone to remove paint/epoxy, as well as weathering with paint.......I have a stupid question: Why soak the belt in acetone?

Rodann,

From every tutorial I've read, to get the color out of the original belt, soaking it in acetone is the quickest way of doing it.

Every tutorial says to soak the belt at least 5 hours in acetone. Once that's done, you take the belt out & rinse it off in very hot water and stretch it out on a board, so it doesn't shrink. After that, it's ready to be painted.

Hope that helps,

Jodo

I thought the reason for soaking it was because the dye would not stick to whatever what put on the belt. The acetone removes that and the belt will take the dye. Not sure if you need to do that if you're painting it. Couldn't hurt though.

Believe me,

Soaking it in the acetone made painting it sooo much easier. Once it was in, the old coloring came right out, leaving it a light grey/brown, making it tons easier to paint!!
Trust me...it works. And if I can do it....anyone can.

I once tried to paint my old girth belt, and the paint caked up in some places. I had to order a new one after all.

Did you have this problem? Maybe I'll go back to painting again...
