Gauntlet missile

What is a good machineable material to make a gauntlet missile from? A friend of mine is good at wood-working, but I didn't know if he could turn a missile out of a block of plastic or if balsa wood would be better.

As always, thanks for the input everyone. (y)

If your friend is a wood worker then wood would probably be the best medium to work from since that's what he's most familiar with, that and I don't know where you would find a block of plastic to work from. The only problem with a wooden missile is that it might not have the right texture and without a lot of paint might look like a wooden missile, that and with Balsa in particular it will dent and ding easier than plastic would. You might be able to get around this by sanding it really smooth and put on a good coat of primer before painting or you could mold the wooden missile and cast it in resin.

He would use a lathe, and the rocket cone with the vent-holes is the main thing he would make for me. The cylindrical body I can improvise out of PVC or Sintra. I'm planning on using Plastruct for the cooling veins on the body.

I was thinking that a hardwood for the tip/cone would work. By the time I lay primer, paint and wear marks on it, any dings will be unnoticeable or else just work as part of the overall look. :)
