Has anyone attempted to make Fett armor out of wood? I dunno how easy that might be, but it seems like if you have the right tools, you could make a nice, durable set of armor.

I've never done any costuming personally, but I've always been interested in it, so I may get into it sometime. I just kinda stumbled across this forum--it's great fun just to browse around and see what cool stuff people are making.

I think it'd be pretty interesting to see....maybe an all "natural" fett with everything done with a not towards environmentalism. You can still do the proper colours with stains and with semi-transpartent stains you'd retain the woodgrain for a really cool look. Really the only hard part would be the steam box would have to be a fairly decent size to steam bend some of the armour parts. Definitely post a WIP with pics if you decide to give it a try I'd be very interested in seeing it and welcome to an awesome costuming site.

I thought about the same thing for a couple of years now but was going to try to make some in a month or so..
Would make it out of about 3-4 sheets of 2ply, then either f-glass or carbon fiber over the top, with padding on the back.
Would be easier to set up your bolts insted of drilling though the whole thing...
    Let you no.

I have seen plenty of molds being made out of wood, an all wood Fett would (ha) be cool. I am Woody Fett, just no flamethrowers please. I would think the the weight on the smaller pieces would actually be lighter than fiberglassed parts. Interesting idea.

I would love to see this happen. Especially if they kept to a natural theme. you know, a log and sticks for a jet pack and all

I don't know why you would or what the advantage would be. There are a lot more user friendly materials that make a lot more sense, even for scratch building.

i am curious to how you would get the curvature of the armor to fit up close to the body, having wood pieces thick enough to keep from cracking or breaking...cool idea, and anxious to see how it comes about... also, the backplate...wouldnt that be a nightmare to make out of wood? just brainstorming, not slamming your idea by any means...

I don't really have any plans to try this out at the moment, it just kinda crossed my mind. I was mostly thinking of the chest armor, where the pieces are mostly flat with only slight curvature. You could steam bend the pieces or just sand them down to the right curvature. It would definitely be a labor of love. I know I don't have the experience with woodworking necessary to do Fett armor justice, but I wanted to put the idea out there in case some of the talented people here DO have the necessary experience. If I try Fett armor sometime, I will most likely go with the trash can armor idea. It looks like a good one to start with.

Wood armor would be pretty durable, I think (as long as the plates are thick enough, 1/4 to 1/2 an inch, maybe?), and would hold a finish really well. Those are the main benefits I can think of. And I would also love to see a "natural" Fett. That would be totally awesome. Wouldn't really make any sense, but it would look awesome anyway!

Yes, it has been done before. I'll post some pictures in a few hours.

    As I promisded:

Some parts, like the gauntlets, are made of cardboard and reinforced with fiberglass. He haven't sent me photos of the chest plates... but you can get the idea viewing the other parts.
As you can see my friend's armor is still in progress (he bought it painted but quite spoiled)
