Everybody loves Webleys...
...so here's mine. Finally got it back from deactivation. Due to some stupid laws now it needed to be slotted. It's a 1916 No1 Mark1 and was an unmolested barnfind 'til the deactivator got it into his hands. Pic shows it deact. and cleaned a bit, yet there is still quite some aging and rust visible. I like this used look a lot. Makes you wonder what it went through in those days...

Re: Everybody loves Webleys...
wow... i have to say, i probably would have found it in the barn and said "woot", then never actually had it deactivated.
that being said, the slotting lends itself well to making an rotj out of it ;)
(i had to throw it out there... someday i would love to do a real webley to rotj conversion)

Re: Everybody loves Webleys...
couldn't believe my eyes a few minutes ago i noticed that the manufacturer name was stamped into the wood...looks like it is 92 years old (the wood)....
...oh, and it wasn't me who found it in the barn...i'm not THAT lucky...

Re: Everybody loves Webleys...
Absolutely gorgeous!! I'm curious as to where you're located as to why you had to have it deactivated....it's just a flare gun....not a "firearm". Just thought I'd ask since I'm no gun expert. It just seems such a shame to do that to it.:(

totally agree with you, but unfortunately being located in germany gun laws are different. you even need a permit for a flare gun, this one in particular, cause it is too old. if it would have had a stamp on it that was passed out in the 80's or so it would have been legal to own. but because it's so old those type of guns would never get that approval stamp. in order to get a permit for a flare gun i was told i'd need a boat first:lol. yeah right. so the only other option was to have it deactivated, unfortunateley i bought it in the middle of the year and just in april 2008 gun laws received even stricter guidelines. and now deac. needed to be slotted. syupid but thats the way it is...and a few months to late. in a nutshell some laws are just stupid.
as far a locating it, i bought it from a licensed dealer, who at my first call couldn't even say that it was a no1Mark1, he only had it listed as old Webley flare gun...

volkerc, I don't know how you do it... great find.:thumbsup
Can you post a pic of the slots...
Would you be able to make a copy of the barrel (in bronze) w/out the slots, then add it to your original?
thx for sharing.

nah, removing the barrel would be considered illegal. don't want to post a close up of the slots, as it would break a lot of guys hearts. if you look closely you'll see them in the pic already.
and yeah, sometimes i don't know how i do it myself...:lol

i'd only carve up a real one if the barrel was damaged. even worse than the slotted barrel, like a crack, split, etc...
i keep hoping i come across one like that... because at that rate i wouldn't mind sawing off the front.

yeah i thought so. gonna push the tube in a little more. no. not painting it and not blueing either. i don't want my webley to look like new, i like the rusty look. and looking at the pic below, i see some rusty red as well. the flash on my pics brought out this silly brown look, without flash it's more like a dark untreated rusty metal, somewhat like in the pic below.

Re: Everybody loves Webleys...
Great work V... looking very nice indeed! 8)
-
Re: Everybody loves Webleys...
Couldn't agree more V with keeping the Webley in it's as-is condition....they're beautiful and after nearly 100 years of "weathering" they are in need of no futher attention...especially for an ESB.
Hard to believe that I've passed on 2 blued ones in superb condition over the years, but now, it's just cost prohibitive for me:(
Again, NOICE!

Re: Everybody loves Webleys...

Re: Everybody loves Webleys...
I hadn't seen one of these things pre-modified before. Shame you needed to get a FLARE GUN deactivated... It's ridiculous the amount of gun fear they have in Europe, even if it's something that wasn't even designed to be fired at somebody.

it's an old machine gun sling. needed to be slightly modified. a few tips from a great leather expert here helped out a lot.;) the sling is very flexible, probably due to the age of the thing (? i'm not a leather expert). i think the color and aged look fits perfect.
