ESB Blaster (Sidewinder)

Hi

Just finished putting together this Sidewinder ESB Blaster as part of a full costume for a customer. I'm really pleased with the kit, it required very little work to get it ready to paint. I've built quite a few ROTJ blasters over the years but I think that this is only my second ESB blaster.

I purposely painted the stock in darker shades of brown, I found this works well with the gunmetal colouring elsewhere, it also worked well alongside the tone of the leather strap. I spent quite a while working on the subtle rust tones all around the gunmetal areas, these were achieved with a series of pigments and washes.

Any criticisms are most welcome

Nice job Daz! You know I'm a big fan of your work! I'm going to be painting my Seven Kit soon, as soon as I get all the hardware worked out! Out of curiosity, what was the base color you used. What brand/name of "gunmetal" did you use? I'm thinking of going floquil/Pollyscale personally.

very nice work, brother! how did you get that "rusty" look to it? havent seen that effect done so well...

The rust effect is achieved by applying a couple of 'washes'. I use "MIG" pre mixed washes for this, these are basically very watery paint that you apply into the crevices, sponge off excess and then let dry. They are best applied on top of Tamiya Acrylics or a surface sealed with varnish. I also use a little MIG Pigments, these are a very fine ground powder that can be applied dry or using a special liquid that dries them in place. These techniques are used extensively in model making.

The base colour for the blaster was black, then I applied a light coat of Tamiya Gunmetal on top. I didn't need to seal the surface before I applied the washes.

ya, brother, totally makes sense! :cheers my blaster is a stormrider blaster, and it came molded in black, so this method will be awesome, and your pics are great for reference as well...thanks Daz!!

Man you do great work, your stuff is always on the money.
Any chance of a ESB Blaster weathering tutorial / step by step.
You kind of have a rotj step by step.
it would be great to see it for the ESB blaster.
as always it's good to see how the pro's do it
