Dying the Girth ROTJ style.

Hey guys!

I'm ready to dye my girth belt and stick my straps on it to make it functional, any ideas? To be honest I'd rather dye it but I'm up to anything!
I have the Mohair Centaur Non-slip Girth Belt you can get from Amazon, it's a 34" one too if that helps? :)

I gave up on using actual dye on the girth belts. I have used the stain technique linked to above and augmented that with spray paints. I use the same belt that you have purchased. I have done about 4 or 5 of them now and I am happy with the results.

So I should buy the latest stain and try it out rather than RIT dying it? Is there a specific red I need to use?

I wouldn't mess with RIT dye. It doesn't work on this fabric.

I don't remember the exact name of the stain I used but I just went in and got a dark red stain........it was kind of a barn red. Then I used Krylon Georgia Clay spray paint to accent and continue to tint the belt. Then I finished with some misted brown and black for weathering.

I used 1" nylon webbing from the hardware store. Fabric stores will have it too.

Does anyone know how to brighten the colour of my belt, I gave it an acetone bath and it lightened, should I just do the same thing again?

I did it because my belt was pretty much a dark red brown, its less brown now.

It depends on what you mean, lighten or brighten? I would think you meant "more colorful" by "brighten", so I'd suggest more dye then. If you mean lighten, and the acetone worked, try it again.

It's very dark in some areas, I just wanted to make the reds a little lighter so I put it through the wash and it lightened up the red.

This is what it looks like currently

Looks good to me. Mine was similarly light, so I re-dyed it to darken it up. Personally I don't think there's any one level of darkness/color that is 100% correct, since the look changes a lot from scene to scene in the films depending on lighting etc. Most important is how it looks as part of the overall costume.
