DVH (7CS) Jetpack scratch build (2015 updates!)

thanks Andy! I think this one is coming out better than the first one at the beginning of the thread LOL!

I also think it gives a far greater connection to the thing because of the process (you know like the roof you've done, the plumbing you've fitted or floor you've laid). My first helmet paintup was okay although I could have paid someone to do a better job than I could I felt a greater connection (and also a motivation to improve with the next). I can't compare your current pack to your previous as your previous didn't advance as far but this pack is coming on really, really nicely. What will be the approach with the thrusters et al? Your own scratch build again or any help? Genuinely impressed with this thread and the work that has gone into it. How easy is bondo to work?

I agree Andy! Thanks for the compliments :) i got a silicone ice ball mold to make a resin ball from, and i will add the detailing into that for the thruster balls. i will probably use the template for the cone part.

Bondo is a pain sometimes. Its alot harder than the spackle and harder to sand. which is why i used it only where i needed alot of bulk or a little more rigidity. the spackle is less durable but sands easily. as long as i can get 1 good mold from this in happy lol

yessir. However i was thinking of doing another, if my wife decides to do a custom mando, that would actually be useable, using more foamboard support bracing and putting styrene over all of the panels. This way it would be super light. While building this one i thought of a few ideas for that type of build. I was planning to mold this one from the beginning :)

Ok...i still need to do the bottom caps and finish off th bottoms of the fuel tanks , and make a few more small tweaks but the main body is close to finished now.

However i wanted to get started on the thrusters. Originally i had a styrofoam ball i covered with elmers glue but it didnt work out as welkl s i hoped so i scratched that.

Then i got to thinking ...i wanted to make a mold of a wood ball and carve into the casting to get the details on it...then a lightbulb went off, as i remembered seeing silicone ice ball molds for making large ice balls to put in your whiskey. So i went to e-bay and found a set of 2 for $10 and bought them. That saved me time and mold rubber!

here is what i got:

So i filled that sucker up with resin and got this..

I then drew the design onto the resin ball. Its not perfect, but its a good approximation of what i wanted to do.

So i brought it into the shop and went at it with my dremel and a large flat exacto knife.

I used the Dark-side metal greeblies for the sizing of the areas they go in. I will fabricate resin ones later on, but i want my pack to have the metal greeblies so i wont make those right away. Its not perfect, but i thiunk for a first go it aint bad!

And by the sounds of things, we could use someone else cranking these out. Excellent work so far, DV!

lol you guys are too much :D

I dunno if i'll be cranking them out, i know they take a bit of time to cast, and can be a pain in the butt, but i'll do my absolute best to at least get a few out there. lol.
