Feb 24, 2010, 3:22 PM - Did you mount your scope backwards? #1

In the ROTJ movie, the scope is mounted backwards on Boba's blaster. I'm going to mount the scope now, but I'm afraid that people will comment on my backwards scope!

I really want to walk the path of screen accuracy, but I'm afraid that people will giggle of "the girl who don't know anything about weapons".

How did you mount your scope, and why? Do people ever comment on the backwards scope?

The scope is mounted backwards in ESB and forwards in ROTJ. It is, however, also mounted backwards on the stunt version on the skiff where it gets chopped in half and latterly on the SE publicity shots where the half scope is mounted on the EE-3.

I'd go with mounting it backwards. While I'm sure whoever assembled the blaster prop wasn't familiar with weapon optics and mounted the scope backwards by accident, you also have to think...there's a lot of awkward looking stuff in the Star Wars universe. A lot of modified props and "greeblies" are pieces of WWII and Vietnam miltaria, so the way they're installed onto the props is unique to just how Star Wars is.

I'd go backwards too then if anyone laughs at you just ask them where "their" screen accurate Boba Fett suit is?

Yep, I own a real ASI scope... and it's backwards, as it should be

The mounting of scopes backwards is also often done as some kind of "in joke" in movies. There are many examples of it happening. Quite famously is this image of Bruce Willis in Tears of the Sun where his aimpoint optic is mounted backwards despite having real military advisors working on the movie as technical experts.

Firearms in general are usually misrepresented in movies. One of my favorites is when one is out of ammo and you still hear the "click, click, click" as they keep squeezing the trigger kind of like a kids snap gun. So backwards scopes don't surprise me either... :-)
