Deriak's build

Just ordered more paint from mega hobby. I love that site.. I will order that masking fluid when I begin my helmet. I think I still have enough to finish my body armor. I just want to be consistent with certain area's.

Thanks DVH and DP, your input is valuable. If you see anything that needs improving, don't hesitate to make a note of it. Especially the damage. I know it wont be perfect but if its "why is that there" or "where is this", let me know. I will fix.

There is a Girth belt in the Cargo hold being sold by starchild99.. he says it measures 32" end to end and made for 36" waist.. I am a 32" waist... should I hold out and get the correct size for me or will it be ok to wear because it is also suppose to go around the armor also? It really is a good deal.

i don't think you're going to get any where near 4" worth of armor and jumpsuit underneath for it to fit properly with the correct gap in the back. IMO, it would be better to pay the extra 20 bucks and get one that fits the way it should.

Been really slacking lately on my paint process, but I have been trying to snatch misc items people are parting out.

I was able to get a Girth Belt and Wookie Braids. Waiting for the Cape to come in now. Been so busy with autocross and fixing other peoples cars that I havent had a chance to get back into the groove. Hopefully this weekend will give me some free time. My target time is DragonCon still.

Finally got some work done, however I ran into an issue that I am afraid I may have to redo, find a fix or accept imperfection.

Messed up one of the shoulders. Somehow some thinner dripped on the edge of the shoulder and paint looks off. Can't really tell, but I can. Just gotta add a few extra layers of paint

Now what I screwed up and need some advice. The green areas on the chest and ab plates where it appears that the green is chipping away.

Ab plate 1.jpg

That circled in red. I forgot to paint this and mask it off using Humbrol no. 78 before finishing off with no. 117. I tried to paint it in but after it dries it does not look light enough and having issues with it having that chipped away look. I even tried a duller/lighter no. 76 and no. 150 which is even duller green.

Any suggestion on fixes?

Using some techniques from the help of you guys. I was able to complete the paint chip part. Not how I wanted it, but it is what it is. This is the thread where they helped me.

I was too far away so it isn't very detail picture. It isn't screen accurate, but will do for now. I will "upgrade" in the future. Hopefully this will still get approved by 501st. If not, I will redo.

I began my right gauntlet last night also. Just trimmed, located oval piece and installed the hose connector. Thanks to RKD magnet sticky thread. I was intimidated at first, but after doing it, not so bad.

For the past month I have been trying to get my gauntlets assembled. I tried the magnet style, but that was a fail. I couldn't get it lined up correctly. I need 5 more hands. Ended up screwing it up. So, I had a friend 3D print these hinges that attached using a rod. Was working great when I had it buttoned in for testing. I decided to try and use rivets, but they ended up breaking my hinges. I have already trimmed the maximum, so now I am going with the piano hinge.

I can not find any piano hinges with the removable pin. Does anyone know of a place who sells them. I tried Ebay, but no success unless I am look up the wrong item.

Any help please?

i dont THINK they come with the removable pin.

My thought was the hinge was just cut larger than needed and then the flat sections cut, but not through the rod. The flat parts should just be able to be slid off if they are separated form the rest of the hinge. I think lol. Then they just bend the excess rod sticking out. At least thats how i always thought it was done. I could be completely wrong..lol, but thats what i was thinking.

They sell the hinge at Home Depot. I got one that one was like 4ft long. Use a skinny punch to begin to remove the pin from the hinge, then just pull it out when you are able. I would refrain from bending it. Then line your 2 hinge halves back up and measure how long you need for your gauntlet. Cut the hinge at the appropriate length. Now cut the pin about an inch or so longer. Bend the last inch of the pin into an "L" shape or an "Eye" shape. Voila!

Darth Voorhees has it right as well. There is probably a thread with pictures detailing it somewhere. Maybe Cruzer on some of his Jango gaunts?

Good luck!

Yea, I figured this much.. I bought the 2ft long hinge and tried to pull the pin out, I couldn't get it out so Tried grinding those dimples out but i think that made the pin even harder to remove because of the rough edge from the drimmel. I think I may have gone too far and into the pin.. I will purchase them again and then try it a different way. I will try harder to remove the pin first.

Thanks guys

Deriak, I bought a 12inch hinge from Lowes made by Gate House. It was the smallest I could find. You will have to cut it to length with a rotary saw. I posted how I did mine, I hope it helps:

Just a thanks to you guys with the hinge pin issue I had. I was able to get the pin out and then drill out the little notches. Now I just need to attach them..

I see you just used a 2 part epoxy.. You think that is good enough to hold in place? I was thinking about riveting it in. If I can avoid drilling any more holes though, I would much rather just use epoxy..

Also, one more question. I see a lot of fiberglass with gauntlets. Are people reinforcing them with fiberglass on the inside?

JB weld will hold the hinges with no problem. Just need to prep the surfaces properly. Mix and apply, then clamp one side and allow to cure overnight. Then apply to the other side and clamp that side and also allow to cure overnight. It also gives a much easier time for readjusting compared to a five minute epoxy or CA glue.

If you have MOW gauntlets, he recommends reinforcing them with fiberglass if you will be trooping them. RKD's resin tops are pretty thick and he uses some inner coating as well that mkes em super durable so no need with his. FP make fiberglass gauntlets so well they are fiberglass lol. My old MOWs were reinforced, my FP's were glass on top and vaced bottoms, but i glassed the bottoms because i was using the hinge and clips. In hindsight, i should'nt have done that because the vac'ed bottoms lend themselves well for adjustment if using velcro or magnets for the closure.

AHh, thanks for the JB weld idea..

Good to know DVH. I am using RKD's gauntlets. They seem to be fairly durable. I just wanted to make sure I am not missing anything. Thanks

Ok, over my week off, I only had about 2 hours of time to actually work on Fett. I am pretty sure I am finished with the weathering.

The chest I feel I went a bit overboard, esp with the black/brown burnt spots..The collar seems a bit too clean in the pictures but it has a slight mist of black over it.. maybe need more? What do you guys think?
Semi finished front armor.jpg

I think the knees and shoulders look good.. opinions?
semi finished kness.shoulders.jpg

And the back I kinda didn't do too much other than the misting with black.. The CoD piece has a good bit of blotching I think.. I am afraid to do too much because its easier to add then it is to erase....
Semi finished back armor.jpg

Opinions and criticism would be great. I have not put the final clear on this yet til I am confident that it is worthy. I know my black specs are not screen accurate, it was more random. I let the rattle can decide where those went. I know there is a lot of question with how much the weathering looks in pictures, so let me know what you think and suggestions to improve are always welcome.

Friend finally finished my flight suit, spats, flak jacket, neck seal and side pouches... She did great job. Looks too clean though.. Will take pictures either tonight or tomorrow.

I am still debating on how I am going to attach the armor to the vest. Is there a good tutorial on using those metal circle thingies? I see people use them but I don't know how to install them or how they acutally work.

I am assuming you guys don't want to hurt my feelings on how bad of a weathering job I did on my armor due to the silence..... ugh! Hope my helmet turn out better

looking fine. you can add small scratches and washes (window cleaner/blacks.. I attached with velcro and never got loose. The back doesnt need attachment as the jetpack pushes it against your vest
