Deriak's build

Thanks. Yea, LadySewforus is out. I did get prices from Arkady. When I begin my helmet, I will probably go ahead and order my soft parts. Hopefully by the time I am done with my helmet the soft parts will be here at the same time. Then I can start on my last touches. I feel the gauntlets and Jet pack are going to be my biggest challenge as far as assembly. We will see.

Some progress today. My knee's finally dried and was able to attach the reinforced backing on them. Looking good I think. Very sturdy too. So I went ahead and sanded my chest, shoulders, and kidney plates with 400. Then hit them with a grey primer in a rattle can. I think it looks good. I ran out of sandpaper so I still have my cod plate and back plate. I sanded around the damaged area's especially good knowing that where the masking is going to happen.

Question on the cod plate though. I don't think I trimmed enough. There is a line that is shown on the inside that looks like where I should trim it too, but I don't know if I should trim that far. Should I trim that lip off? I want to but I also don't want to trim too much. Opinions?

Knee darts are drilled and test fitted. You can see where the cutter got away from me on the smaller hole. You can notice it more with the primer on. Will have to fill that in and sand it smooth I guess.
To secure that darts in place. What adhesive should I use. These are the 3 I have been using so far. I was going to use the E6000. What do you guys suggest?

shoe Goo is better than E6000 why because it resist's cold E6000 gets brittle in cold weather and real soft in hot weather and shoe goo or goop is acid resistant from possible sweat it's used to put soles back onto shoes

Hmm, Interesting. Will look for that stuff. Thanks

Ok, now that DragonCon is now over and I now have a bit more time to work on this project. This finally came in yesterday. I had to pick it up today though but still exciting none the less. Big shout out to Darth Voorhees for being so helpful with it. After some recommendations, I will paint the armor first so I can get used to the airbrush before I tackle the helmet. If I screw up the armor, it would be a lot easier to start over one section rather that redoing an entire helmet, right?

Well, here is the helmet I just got. The ears and rangefinder is not attached and will need to bit more detail trimming. If anyone has a good resource on how to attach these ears and rangefinder, please link it. It did come with screws and nuts. If I can't find anything by the time I am ready to begin, I will figure it out eventually.

So I finally got around to try to airbrush for the first time. I started with the kidney plate and back plate because those are usually not seen as easily and I got more room for error there.

I made a huge mess. Used an entire 14mL of humbrol 11 silver paint on just these 2 pieces. I wasted a good bit on my hands and on the floor. I started to use the vacuum feed bottle on the airbrush but it would sometimes stop picking up paint.. I switched to the gravity feed cup and that worked perfectly. I didn't have any issues with splattering, that was good. Cleaning up was a pain. Got that all over my hands too.. Anyway. I will have to order more paint or the rest of the armor, but next I will start with the masking and then the yellow.. exciting. I feel really good about this now..

So I began stencil on the kidney plate. I realized after I started masking it off, that I should only be doing the larger areas and the scratches and smaller marks can be added in afterwards.

So I sprayed my yellow layer next and used alot of paint for some reason. Almost half my bottle. I don't know what I am doing wrong but I guess it doesnt matter because it is turning out great. I may be putting too many coats of paint on but if I don't it looks blotchy. Anyway, I just need to order more paint to finish all of this. Now I got a little impatient and started peeling off parts already which after half way through I realized I still need to add green with the added masking to the yellow.. UGH.. No worries. Another lesson learned..

So I finally masked off the rest of the yellow and had to go over some of the silver also.. not a big deal. Didn't really set me back any. When I started to lay down the green I got real nervous because it looked a bit too light, especially over the yellow. After I added a couple more coats, it really started to look good. I really liked this color choice.

I waited 24 hours for it to dry and began peeling away the masking. For some reason parts of it was smearing along the edges which got me a bit frustrated. I was using my finger so that is probably the issue. I may try to add more masking fluid to make it a bit thicker because I also noticed some green got through some of the yellow and silver.
KIdneyplate4.jpg

I went ahead and started using a brush to add all the small silver scratches and notices it applied really easily, so I just went ahead and started touching up some of the spots that green and yellow got on the silver and changed a couple areas that I felt wasnt very accurate. Had some yellow and green left over so I fixed all the smeared spots and fixed a couple spots too.

I am finished with the kidney plate and I am very happy how this turned out. This was my first actual airbrush job and I learned A LOT. I feel my front parts will look SO much better.

Went ahead and masked off the silver on the back plate also during the week.

Last thing I did tonight was get the yellow down. I got autocross tomorrow so I will let this sit and dry til tomorrow night.

Quick question though, I got some blemishes in the green where its more glossy in one area and dull in other spots. When I apply the semi gloss clear coat, will that take care of that? Or will using the 400 grit sand paper fix that before the clear coat?

You really don't want to apply a semi-gloss. Shiny isn't really what you're looking for. A dullcote/matte coat would be more suitable. Are you mixing glossy and matte paints?

Thankfully I haven't even bought any type of clear/sealer yet. Thank you for the advice too. I was going to ask that question when I get closer to sealing in the paint. I thought I read somewhere that they used semi gloss clear. I do want that dull look.

so what do you suggest?

Testors dullcote is the go to for most. Any good brand of flat/matte lacquer should work. Make sure the color layers are well cured, and think thin. Lacquer dries quick so you can re coat pretty quick if needed.

I'd go with two or three. Shouldn't take much to seal it in and dull it down. I'm not really too memorized on the damage areas on ROTJ, but it looks really good! Damage looks nice and not over-done. You should have no issues with the clear coat. And you can probably do all your armor with just one can>

Quick update. I have had to pack up my Boba Fett the other week because I just closed on my first house last week. Over the weekend I have been peeling wall paper, sanding, repairing sheetrock, primering, painting and layed down hard wood flooring. Every day after work, my wife and I have been going to the new house trying to fix it up to move into this weekend. This saturday we will be officially moved in but there are still many things that need to be painted and fixed. I have been having withdraws on working on my Fett. Its my motivation to finish this house ASAP. Good note, i got a 2 car garage now and a shed! No more clutter in my garage. Will post pics of the new place when we get it finished

Your doin a great job so far bud!

For my paintjobs i only use Matte humbrols, and seal them with the clear matt humbrol through the airbrush like the paints. if you hit it lightly with steel wool after completely dry (i usually give it a couple of days) it gives it a very slight luster and IMO it looks perfect.

i completely feel your pain with the house stuff! We just moved into a new place that still needs to be finished and all of my commission work has been on hold while we get this place liveable. Right now we have our matress on the floor in what will be the kitchen lol. We put down hard wood floors a couple of weeks ago. We still need to put in the central air heating ducts, tape, spackle and paint the walls, and put in the kitchen cabinets/appliances. This weekend we are building a shed/shop so i can get back to work sooner rather than later! Then we start the loft bedroom which right now is just wood beams and 90% of a subfloor.

All i really wanna do is get back to my Fett work...sigh.

Well, I must say, you are doing a lot more work than I am. You definitly got your work cut out for you. Hope all is going smooth though. I still have doors that need to be painted and some area's of the trim around the house that need to be touched up. Garage is still a mess though. Hopefully will get some of that done this weekend.

Thanks for the advice on the clear. I haven't ordered anything yet. I was going to wait til I get all the pieces completed and then do all the clear at one time.
