    Aug 15, 2010, 10:34 PM - Definitive inventory of the gauntlets? #1

Stupid question, and probably been asked before, but damned if I can find it. What do all the different stations on the gauntlets do? I've seen mention of all the equipment that supposedly exists on Boba's gauntlets, but I have not been able to locate a picture or blueprint that specifically identifies equipment and location. I've tried looking on various sites, doing searches, but I never seem to get a definitive answer on this...I figure if anyone knows it would be someone on this site.

    Left gauntlet
    1. The missile/rocket launcher is obvious. Why have I seen a hose hooked to that though?

    2. Keypad at the front...I think for interfacing with Slave 1? Or am I completely off?

    3. The two barrels on the side confuse me though. I've mostly seen that referenced as a flamethrower, but have also seen it as one being a flamethrower and the other being a blaster or a grenade launcher. The one thing that has me confused about one or both being a flamethrower is: where is the hose? Why no hose for this, but one on the missile?

    Right gauntlet
    1. Other than the darts, I am not sure what else is here.

    2. From pictures, there look to be at least three other items...the gray tube above the darts, with a black "trigger button" and rear hose attachment (to me, this seems like the logical spot for the flamethrower)

    3. and two on the side (one recessed inside and one on the tip). Both of those have hose attachments as well.

I know one of those has to be a grappling cable, but not sure which.

I have seen anywhere from 1 to 3 hoses attached to the right gauntlet, what's correct? Personal preference? Because I am not sure what is on each gauntlet, I have trouble deciding about the hoses.

For me, if I were to just assign weapons, based on hoses, buttons, logic...I would say left gauntlet has the missile launcher, with a double barrel blaster on the side. Then the right gauntlet would have the darts, with the flamethrower being the gray tube above the darts. Then the recessed weapon on the side would be the grenade launcher with the grappling cable coming out of the smaller tip of the side enclosure. That's just me though.

Can anyone give me a definitive inventory of the gauntlets, or point me to a picture or blueprint that can? Is there a definitive answer...or has the lack of one been the reason I have never been able to find one? hehe Thanks in advance.

The two main references are these:

You will note there are a few contradictions. I guess it adds to the mythos of the man that his enemies would not know the full extent of his arsenal

such is the way of star wars, things are done because they look cool, it may not make sense, but it sure looks nifty! unlike in star trek where things are explained away to most minute detail in techno-babble gibberish.

Thanks for the pics and the info. I'd seen the first pic recently, but was never able to find a super clear version, until now that is! And the second one, I think I saw that years ago...which might make sense why I always thought the flamethrower was on the right gauntlet. And why I always thought the missile on the left was a laser. In ROTJ when he fires from the left, it looks like a laser to me, though others say that was his missile.

So I guess the thing to take away from this is there are no definitive answers (given the contradications) and that it's open to personal interpretation and preference (within reason of course)? hehe With that in mind, I think I have a good idea of what I want each weapon/equipment station to house. I think to me, the flamethrower makes more sense on the right, and unless I can figure out a way to attach hoses to the side of the left gauntlet (something I am loath to do since it isn't on the actual costume) those will be blasters. Or maybe a shotgun? heheh That addition of the hose is something I want to avoid as I want to do my interpretations within the context of the standard costume, not start inventing new issues! hehe

Out of curiosity though, not that I am joining or anything, but how do groups like the 501st handle that question? I know you have to meet some strict detail guidelines to join...do they have an agreed upon weapon loadout of Fett's gauntlets, or is it more just a matter of the costume detail being correct?

And I'd never thought about that saint_nasty re: star trek vs star wars. I mean there are all the obvious differences between the two franchises, and both appeal to me in different ways, but what you mention is kind of a subtle thing. The "definitive" answer is a commonality with Star Trek since like you said they go into the minute details of things, everything being explained and designed in engineering manner, which my anal retentive side appreciated and liked.

With Star Wars there was always more of a "by the seat of the pants" feel to how stuff was put together, at least in the early days. That's one reason the Star Wars Complete Locations and Complete Cross Sections type books appealed to me...they answered some of the questions my anal retentive side got used to being answered by Star Trek Technical Manuals! hehe

In the 501st it's basically it has to look like what was seen on screen, if you choose to believe the two barrels on the left are blaster and grenade launcher it's pretty much your choice as long as it's there. Personally I prefer SW over Trek because things aren't explained to every detail. Trek was more about the science of how things worked, SW they worked because they did and who cares about the science and dynamics of it. Again which is why the whole midichlorian thing irritated me, why do we have to know how the force works, just accept that it's a life energy that surrounds everything and let it go.

Ahhh gotcha, I wasn't sure if the 501st's attention to detail part carried over to the explanation side.

Myself, I like both franchises...each appeals to a different interest and side of me. I dig the "explaining everything" aspect of ST, as I am just interested in things that way. While I like SW because they don't do that...go figure that! hehe

Except as you say, the midicholrian thing. That was one of many things that irritated me about Eps 1 to 3. As you say, why does there even have to be an explanation? Why can't it just be a life energy, like it's explained as in the Original Trilogy? There was nothing wrong with just leaving it strictly as a force that binds all living creatures together. In a way that makes it even more powerful because you can't quantify it and some people are just more able to tap into that force. Giving a scientific explanation kind of mutes its power in my mind and makes it just an organic thing, like a genetic disease..."oh you were born with Type 1 diabetes? I got a case of the Force. No I can't take anything for that, insulin doesn't do it."

I think it's the anachronistic nature of it that bugs me as well. It has a more mystical, general explanation in the OT, which chronologically fall AFTER Eps 1 to 3. But everyone knows the scientific, cut and dry, biological reason in the new trilogy. It would make much more sense if it were the other way around, mystical at first until research was done...ahhh such is life with George.

And if that's what determined power of the Force, then why didn't Ben test Luke on the Falcon while traveling to Alderran, or when he first met him on Tatooine?

Star Treks pseudo-science is just irritating. The old joke that sums it all up is when one Trekkie asked at a convention "How do the Heisenberg compensators work in the transporters?" and the answer was "Very well thank you". Remember that there isn't any astral anomaly or subspace vortex that can't be solved using an inverse tachyon pulse from the remodulated forward deflector array.

Berkal: You ust confused the hell out of me with that fancy talk of yours lol. I love the OT mysticism. The Force shouldn't be explained that's what made it so cool to begin with. And then having it be explained as having a case of super worms is even worse. They already made a fan edit of Ep I without Jar Jar, I'm wondering if someone could go back an cut out the midichlorian issue as well. If Qui Gon wants to test to see if the boy is force sensitive, he can make him lift a rock with his mind.

as far as the 501st goes, when i'm in costume and kids start asking me about what this and that does i just completely BS my way through it. i tell them the "technical" name of what we generally call the part, but when they ask me to fly around with my jetpack i'm like, "have you seen gas prices?" or if they want me to shoot something i explain that i was recently arrested by the empire and making celebrity appearances on behalf of the empire is part of the conditions of my parole and that my weapons have been peace bonded. but since i usually troop with either an officer or darth vader i can blame it on one of them and that they're my parole officer. and the kids are like, "woah!" but the best costumed BS i ever did was for a panel at a small local convention, we were discussing the 501st, but then somehow the questions turned to the technical side of star wars, i was wearing an officer uniform at the time and the question was why did the armor change so much from the clones to the storm troopers? my gml was doing most of the talking up until that point and he had nothing for that question, so i jumped in with, "how you seen how large the empires military is? there were some budget cuts that needed to be made along the way. conscription costs less than a clone; and the armor, while still providing maximum protection, was contracted to a less expensive manufacturer. star destroyers and death stars don't come cheap." and the kid was blown away, i don't think he had ever thought about there being practical, financial reasons for doing anything in movies.
