Cheap and Easy 5 Minute Toe Spikes

I thought I would share with everyone how I made my metal toe spikes in minutes. You will need

1. (1) Aluminum Rod

2. Metal pencil sharpener (the one with the small hole and bigger hole the big side will be the only side used.)

3. Vice

4. Drill

5. Hacksaw or Dremel with cutting wheel

Secure your pencil sharpener in your vice.

Test fit your aluminum rod in the sharpener to ensure you have the proper fit.

Cut 4 pieces of your rod and ensure the end is uniform and flat. This step is super important because it will make sure all the spikes are uniform. Mount your first piece in your drill.

Slowly turn your pieces in the sharpener, be sure you keep the drill straight and level and sharpen to your desired tip. x4

Done! Now you have 4 toe spikes cheap fast and easy! I changed blades after the first two spikes were sharp.

So maybe it's a silly question but what is the length from the toe plate to the tip of the spike so post to be?

So to get those iconic dents in the front of the spike I very carefully and very slowly drilled these out. If you have a drill press I highly recommend using it.

First I set the spikes in the vice.

Then I lined up the drill bit. I found after the first couple it was much easier to control the bit if I put the majority of it in the chuck.

Carefully drill.

Boom! A nicely dented spike to match your helmet !

And a mock up on the boot. I think I'll have to remake the toe plate it's a bit short.

Those look great, personally I prefer slightly longer spikes, just a matter of where you cut them. But great either way, I'll be heading to home depot today!

Thanks Gregory I don't know what sized rod I used. I should have taken note of that. I just grabbed the one that looked right. Let me see if the tag is still on it.

On another note I got the toe plates on with the right size nails and a little weathering. I toned down the darker grays a bit.

Those do look good.
I used the tips from Uniball Gel pens for mine. There is a hole in the end but it adds a little extra bit of detail that is kind of neat.

Yeah after all the work I did I came back inside and my wife said "those look just like the tip of this pen." I guess that's what I get for suing her eyeliner sharpener.

**Post 100** Horay!
