Cbrant's Rattlecan ROTJ Build

    Cbrant's Rattlecan ROTJ Build

Update: Will be using RKD armor, Asok CC helmet, MoW girth belt and ammo belt.

    Hello all,

I'm very new to prop making, but am excited to give my best shot on creating an accurate ROTJ Fett. I come from the world of Jeeps, so I've done plenty of shop time. I will probably ask a lot of questions and hope some of you very experienced Fetts can help me out. I've started my build with RedKraytDragon's awesome armor, which I've already got in silver paint. I am also waiting on an Asok budget cold cast helmet. These will be my first two projects and I will be painting with rattlecan/spraycan. <br>

Picture is a good example of armor that is not trimmed enough. Too thick on edges and didn't cut flashing from dents. Thanks F4R.

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

Thanks man! Can anyone tell me if I trimmed an appropriate amount from the damage edges? In my quick research I noted some people grinding away parts of their dents, but most seem to keep the edge in line with the intended armor edge, so I assumed that to be the best way.

I plan on using RafalFetts stencils to mark out my damage, and will be using masking fluid. Do you guys have a fancy way of transferring the stencil onto the armor, or do you just cut and trace with a pencil?

It looks like you have more to trim...look at the gallery for reference pics to see how thick the armor should be and what need trimming.
To transfer most people use carbon paper.

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

I think the two chest pieces are what need trimmed the most, which is not a big deal in terms of painting because I need to reshoot them anyway. I didn't tack cloth them before spraying, so they have dust specs in the paint. They were also the pieces I tackled first, so they're worse-off than the belly and collar. I just looked at RKDs magnet attachment thread and he has pictures of the rear, where it shows how much lip he left. Very helpful.

THe Ab plate dents have that extra plastic which is what makes me think you didnt trim the plates thin enough

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

Edit: RKD does intend that the lowest portion of the dents at the edges of the armor be trimmed inward.

Original Quesiton: I think I know what you're talking about, and I was worried about those. You mean the most dented portions, where the armor is its lowest? I was going to grind those out, but looking through builds on here, it looks as those most people do not grind out that big of a portion, but just a slight bit of the edge. It looks as though RKD changed the dent from a one tiered dent, to a two tiered dent at some point. The builds where people have the first single tiered ab plate do not have any amount ground out. Maybe I'm just being too timid about it! I would be interested to know if RKD intends for that to be cut out of there, assuming we're talking about the same spots.

Take a look at the circled areas all of them show "flashing" extra plastic not intended to be left after trimming.

Look at this reference pic for back up....notice its not very thick...maybe 1/8th inch in thickness?

Thank you much. I didn't realize they were so thin. There are a wide variety of thicknesses people decide to leave them as from what I've seen in build threads, but now it seems like not many actually cut them thin enough!

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

The BEST advice I can give is NEVER EVER look at others work as reference. When you do that its like the game where you tell someone something and pass it along buy the 10th person its something completely different. So after a while looking at others work you end up with something completely wrong. Which isnt really your fault but its something that can be prevented and doing the research using the gallery is super easy really. Rafal also has alot of info in his threads...unless its a how to with reference pics dont just look at others work. Really I should do a trimming tutorial huh? Fettpride has been meaning to do one but hes to busy I guess....I have some to trim this weekend looks like I know what I should do with that...

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

That's good advice! I think a trimming tutorial would be excellent, at least as a basis for where to begin. As for what I did (likely not the best method):

    • I used a die-grinder with 80 grit to trim, which worked really well for the most part. Got a little carried away on the inside left portion of the collar. It's not too noticeable probably until I say something, but I cut into it too much and will have to live with it.
    • After trimming to where I wanted, I used a pretty coarse sanding foam to take down the edges, probably 200ish, just to get it back to the rounded shape, as opposed to the hard edges my grinder left.
    • After reshaping the edges, I used 600 grit to smooth them out.
    • Roughed up the face with steel wool and primed.

Just in case anyone ever inquires to a method to do it. I'm sure others have better methods... less clumsy or random than a blaster, errrr die-grinder. I am not particularly happy with the silver I had on hand. Since I have to redo a bunch of it anyway, I will be looking for a nice aluminum color. Thanks Fett 4 Real!

While you are in the mode, you may want to consider drilling the three indents in the ab armor and gluing a piece of plastic on the backside of the armor.

I agree with F4R--reference material all the way.

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

Thanks Fettered! Apparently I am misunderstanding the gallery because when I go to it, there are a very limited number of ROTJ pictures. I'm definitely doing something wrong if you guys are able to find pictures like that to compare.

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

Edit: Dumb question below... There is definitely a difference between ROTJ and ROTJ SE. Thanks for clearing that up guys.

Original Question: Another question... Are all ROTJ builds considered "ROTJ SE"? I assumed the SE is special edition, but I am not 100%. I am suddenly in over my head, hah! I am sorry for so many questions.

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

There are different exhibits the suit went to and there are TONs of pics in there Magic of myth would be ROTJ...take a look verify the parts are the ROTJ and then use the reference...Art of star wars is the SE suit pretty much....

    Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ Build

Good thing I put "novice" in my title. F4R, that is extremely helpful. I just took a look through the two quick on what was left of my lunch break and it seems like the only real differences are in minor details? I couldn't see anything noticeably different between the shapes of the helmet or armors. Hopefully I'm not wrong in thinking that. I will probably go with SE, just for the sake of it.

Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ SE Build

The armor of the ROTJ and ROTJ SE dont have the same dents...the SE is ESB repainted the ROTJ has a dent on the right chest plate and then the left and ab are differently dented. Take a look at the ROTJ gallery and you will see what I mean on the right plate. http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/galle...i-costume.html

Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ SE Build

It gets easier the more you learn...Ive been working on Fett for over 4 years now...and theres always things to improve on. It wasnt to long ago I noticed that there was two holes in the missile on the jetpack and before that no one was putting them on their packs...now people add that to their builds. Just take your time if you want a quality build

Re: Cbrant Novice ROTJ SE Build

Alright, I did a redux on the chest pieces last night. Hopefully they look a little better. I took the inside edges down to about 1/8th, similar to the pictures I found in RKDs magnet tutorial thread. I also changed the silver to a better looking aluminum. Sorry for the shady lighting.
