    CA BOOTS/ Weathering

    Hi All,

Just wanted to start a helpful thread for those of us that have CA BOOTS, or any boots, that need that extra “Movie” or “MOM” Look to them.

I’ve noticed that those of us that do have these boots either don’t weather them, or simply don’t weather them enough.

This Tutorial will require some painting skills, and the mixing of paints.

So here are the type of paints and supplies you will need to complete this:

I use an Acrylic water based paint. Namely DELTA CERAMCOAT.
Why? They’re CHEAP!! .99cents each to be exact.
We already spend way too much money for this hobby It’s good to cut some corners every once and while...
You can find them at ANY crafts store AND WALMART!!. And being that we will be painting on material the acrylic is forgiving in that it bends, and still allows the material to breathe.

Here’s the list of the EXACT colors you will need.

    DELTA CERAMCOAT
    1. Charcoal
    2. Black
    3. White
    4. Burnt Umber
    5. Straw
    6. Purple
You will also need some sturdy/Cheap Sable paint brushes… and a good Blow/Hair–Dryer. I use my wife's..shhhhhhh .
UPDATED 10/18/2010: I am now using an airbrush to weather.. and detailing with brushes...
    And some Sand-Paper...150grit or higher.

I want to thank DARTHMILLER for being my "test subject" with his boots…

This first pic is obviously the way the CA BOOTS come ….wrong color and in need of some tender "Love"/ Weathering.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

To start I recommend doing both boots at the same time to insure that the colors match for both boots,,, well Duh., and weather on each the same throughout this tutorial.

This next Pic shows the BASE Color that is used to tone down the light color of the boot.
For this I used a Gray mix/or "WASH" of Charcoal and White....
When applying don't be scared to go at it. Again this is the base color and will be lightened again with highlights later.

You can see the difference in color in the PIC below.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

For the next step you will need to enhance the Dark tones of the Boot.

KEEP in mind the use of REF Photos goes without saying. Here are the main Ref pics I'm using for this thread.

Notice how Dark the boot actually is compared to the Spat or Jumpsuit.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

Using a "WASH" of just the Charcoal..I've applied the wash in most the creases...using the REF Photos to weather accordingly..creating the right tone of the boot in the right area's. Add SMALL amounts of Black to the mix if needed to darken.

Just a hint use a WET ON WET Brush Technique..helps blend the dark and light
    tones...

"WET ON WET" is just simply wetting the surface of the boot and then painting on top....again helps with the blending.....and gives it that "air-brushed" look.

*****At this point I recommend the BLOW/HAIR-DRYER for faster results in drying time..****

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

Next, Using the Straw and Burnt Umber Color Mix/WASH
I apply a SEAM on the bottom of the boot, and tone down the white sole of the boot using the dirty water from the straw color mix.

** NOTE*** Again the “Wet on Wet” technique should work just fine here too…in fact if you mess up….just wipe it off with a damp paper towel and start again…works every time.

You can see in the Pic below I have used the Straw color mix Wash to apply “hints” of brown tones on the boots as well….

Then use the Blow/Hair-Dryer to again Speed-up the drying time.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

If you are using the MOM Refs Pics….one of the first things you notice is a faded Purple or Lavender tint to the boot.
The first Pic shows the comparison of my finished CA BOOTS verses the real one….you can see the Purple tones…

For this, there are two steps …1. the Gray of the boot, and 2. the Black of the boot.

On the Gray of the boot you want to mix a Purple and Black WASH. And like before apply in the creases and dark tones areas.

**CAUTION ** for this stage use a "Dry on Dry" Technique…
You may also want to take off any excess paint on a paper towel and apply sparingly.
Remember to use the ref photos and use this wash for highlights only……..don’t get carried away!!

Repeat the same process for the Black of the boot….
Appling White as needed to the mix to get the desired lavender highlight.

You can see in the below pic the Lavender tones……

**OR if you choose you can COMPLETELY skip this step…..it really is just an added detail for us anal people.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

For the additional gray “Dirt” Weathering on the Sole just use the Charcoal color straight from bottle.

**AND the “Dirty water” you’ve been cleaning your brushes with….USE THAT!!

For applying the color or wash use the Dry on Dry technique, and like the Previous step very sparingly. You may want to test the color on a paper towel first.

Once you apply the pigment to your brush, tap the brush head on a napkin to open up the hairs of the brush to get the detailed dirt specs when applying to the sole….(did that make sense??)
Or you can use a Toothbrush and do the splatter technique......that works great too.

I understand 'wash' on armor, how is it done with this? Is it just paint an water and dried (with the hair dryer)? What is the mix ratio? etc.. Can you explain?

There really is no right or wrong answer in terms of the exact ratio....the more water the lighter the pigment. It's that simple.

Keep in mind these boots are almost like canvas material...if you've ever painted with water and acrylics on canvas then you know that water is your friend. If it's too light make it darker...to dark, make it lighter...and add water for less pigment... works the same.

And the weathering is just that, very random, no paint by numbers here.. ..REF PICS REF PICS!!

    I hope that helped???

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

Okay Last post…I think these babies are done….Well at least one boot is.

Anyway, to get some of the additional highlights use SAND-Paper….yes sand-paper.
The first pic below highlights the areas in which I hit the boot with sand-paper………150 grit should be fine.
All you are doing is making natural scuffs on the boots….creating a “natural highlight”.

The last few pics are just with spats and a comparison of the before and after…..ahhh much better.

***FINALLY once you are done……to help protect all the work you just did and to LOCK-IN the COLOR…..SPRAY the boots with some Workable Fixatif. You can find it in the Spray paint section in any crafts store. I use Krylon #1306. WARNING Spray OUTSIDE….stuff stinks!!
And "Workable" meaning you can still add addtional weathering or touch-ups when needed.
You can Spray the entire boot even the Sole. It may Darken it up just a tad. Buit you will be thrilled with the results.

THANKS EVERYONE for the comments, good and bad…I love a good critique.

Please PM me, or post for questions.

    Enjoy. And hope this helps.

great!! finally someone makes the sole yellowish aswell!!!

    awesome tutorial Spidey!!

this is gonna help alot of people.

I don't agree with them being fitting for ESB if you're going for full 100% accuracy (wich is a pain in the ****** with ESB, I know)

I think ESB boots are much, much darker, with the weathering of the jumpsuit being more intense on the lower parts of the legs... so they don't make that much of a contrast with the jumpsuit and they are not as "coloured" as the MoM pics etc.

    THANKS RBF

And I would have to agree with you on them being darker for ESB.
Sorry about the BAD pics but these are all I had of a full shot of the ESB Fett. You can cleary see the Boots will need to be DARKER if you are doing an ESB.....Good Call RBF!!

I think the Lighting on some of my pics is mis-leading, and changes the color in some shots.

    Great tutorial Spidey !!!

They don't even resemble CA boots anymore, stunning work they look fantastic..
I was going to ask about sealing them with something for fear of getting caught out on a Troop in the rain, but I see you've covered that also.

BTW thats a great looking ESB Fett there Galactic Bounty Hunter

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

I really don't think the boots are substantially darker in ESB. In fact the weathering seems to match the ones at AOSW precisely. I think the percieved 'darkness' is from the lighting of the photos, and perhaps slight fading if they were used in the desert scenes in ROTJ like the jumpsuit and gloves...though I don't know if they actually were used in those scenes.

saturday I'm going to meet Jeremy Bulloch so I'm touching up my costume.

A new scratch build blaster is out of the question but I'm making a but plate as we speak and... yes... toe spikes...

I was thinking of drilling in holes into those boots and plunge shooting leds into them... a metal strip over them and screw that into place... voila...

think the soles would support some sort of glue or anything?

This is a bit of-topic... sorry Spidey...

just figured you disected the boot by now judging by your tutorial...

Here are my boots after following this tutorial:

For the spikes, I sprayed on black paint, then used a rag soaked in thinner to "wear" off the paint.

    they look great

maybe a little to light still, when weathering doesn't show up in pics well, you can do tons more.

Here are a couple of shots of my newly weathered boots. Just did them tonight. This tutorial worked out really well. Comments....they seem to be missing something though. I can't put my finger on it but it is rather pointed.... You know once these things are weathered no one other than us can really tell the difference.

Notice how Dark the boot actually is compared to the Spat or Jumpsuit.

you know the more i look @movie stills the more i think that rotj boots started their life as a tan duck material and were weathered blue to more closely resemble ESB...particularly photo on the right.

Just to clear this up for me, my CA boots are quite a soft material, not quite the canvas I had imagined, more a polyester feel, have they changed at all recently?

A little strong in the purple department in the bright sun, but it's a lot more subtle indoors or in the shade. I'll proably tone down the "splits' in the white area, but wanted to let it dry a bit more before I did any more with it.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

I'll admit CA boots can look really nice when they are all weathered up, especially with the toe spikes BUT

i still don't understand the price tag with the inaccuracy requiring this further weathering?

why are the colors still so off?

I used to own a pair, and got them before the price went up. I ended up selling them to someone in Ireland, mostly because they fit poorly, the heel support felt like it was always caving, and the color was just not right.

I was holding out on finding a pair of used JW, but now I'm wondering

Have the CA boots gotten any better in the past 2 years?

I may order some again, I'd just like to hear someones honest feedback.

And like i said, I know that work can be done to them to make them look good, it's obvious from the pictures.

But out of box, have they improved? or are they the same out of box as they were 2 years ago?

Also, does anyone know the size offset? I wear about a 12. I think my pair was 11 at the time and it felt HUGE!!!

    thanks

    -CB

Yeah, I agree - don't know why they can't do these right to begin with. Unfortunately you so seldom see the other boots for sale. I recall there was a used set on eBay when I was looking once, and they went for around $250. So, the CA's are kind of the only option out there if you want to be sure to get a pair.

Lol - same deal as two years ago on size. I bought mine almost a year ago (I know I am slow) and they are oversized too.

Should you use a cheese cloth to soak up paint? In other words, after you brush it on, should you rub it in with a cheese cloth to soak up excess paint and to make sure it penetrates the material?

Yeah, not really needed like Bubba Fett said...

**And here lately I've been applying all coats with an Airbrush...seems to go faster and no "Brush Strokes" ... however you have to mask/or tape down the spikes, sole, and black ribs of the shoe so no paint gets on those areas before weathering later.

once again Alex... amazing paint... truly what one should aspire to do.

The shading is amazing and very subtle changes as it moves around. Very realistic and natural. I've seen it on other pieces you have painted and posted and it's really a talent. You make something very difficult look very easy...

I don't wanna hold up the thread, since this post was made a few months ago. it's just that I thought it might help on people who have the same doubt about the CA boots.

I don't really think the colors of the CA boot are off... I think you should regard them as what the colors were when Boba bought them...

Basically... regard them as an empty canvas, all you need to do is either wear them for years... hunt some scumbags... freeze some punks in carbonite... or simply paint them up a little.

And I wouldn't even call it painting up, because it's merely rubbing on some accents and dirt colors.

I just love the way myn came out and I found them very comfortable while trooping... Ow... I still haven't got too spikes!!! shame on me...

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

I did a modified version of this tutorial on my old pair of Mark Cheng Boba boots tonight. I actually changed the entire colors of the Cheng's darker so they're more accurately colored now. I used the charcoal/white mix on the main body of the boots, then on the center stripe used a mix of charcoal/black but then went back over the stripe again with the rag I used to wipe on the charcoal/white to tone it down some.

I colored the side elastic panels first with straight charcoal color, but then went over it again with the charcoal/black mixture I used on the center stripe.

I couldn't get my purple/black areas as perfect as the museum suits, but there's a little in the front sections where it's supposed to be.

I'm planning on drybrushing the little detail lines on top of the black piping of the boots as seen in the museum exhibits. What color should I use, silver?

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

Before weathering, here's the color difference. Top boot is the original lighter Cheng boot color, bottom boot was with the mixture of Charcoal and White as in the tutorial. I made that color mix and added water and then dipped an old rag into it and rubbed along each section of boot a few times until the whole surface darkened.

Sorry for necro posting guys, but this thread is so helpful for any noobs that are starting the weathering process. And im my opinion weathering on fabric is alot harder than on armour, So thank you for this spideyfett. And I know I havant been here long but I seriously think that this should be stickied as i know its goin to help me out aswell as others too, and shouldnt get lost with the old threads.

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

I wanted to show what this tutorial could do on a pair of the new styled, JangoWes boots.

First here's how they come. Nice and shiny new....and WAY too light and clean.

And remembering that this is what you're trying to emulate:

I followed Alex's boot weathering tutorial and found it to be a great resource.

First up was the wash of Charcoal and White

Then I needed to darken the dark areas with straight charcoal.

The next step was to wet brush charcoal into the recessed areas around the stiching and blend it in using a paper towel.

Then came some of the weathering using a mixture of Straw and Burnt Umber. You paint in the lines in the soles of the boots as well as give the entire white area a wash with the color. You can wipe away the paint if it goes on too thick. Also, you want to get some of the straw/umber mix up in the bottoms of the boot so it looks dirty.

The next step is to take the Purple and mix it with white and dry brush it onto the creases in the dark areas and mix it with black and dry brush it into the creases on the lighter areas.

Next, I took 220 grit sandpaper and scuffed up some of the areas around the elastic, the toe and the arches to highlight it. I also then took and stippled, wet brushed, dry brushed and flicked paint onto the soles to dirty them up more.

The final step was to install the toe spikes I got from Mojo Fett.

In the end, it was a lot of fun dirtying them up and they look a million times better!

    Re: CA BOOTS/ Weathering

so from reading the replies on here, i see a bunch of unanswered questions about the difference between ESB and RotJ weathering.

the simplest way to tell is to just look at them both and see how they are different. if you are going to be painting this stuff, you need to stare at it until you can see what you are painting. otherwise all the tutorials in the world aren't going to help. look in the gallery, watch the dvds, etc...

i've been saying this a lot on a lot of different forums lately, but the single greatest tutorial you can ever read is this: "Make it look like the picture". that's it

has anybody done this exact tutorial on a pair of MOW's? His are more whiter/cream colored so I was wondering if using the paints would get the same results?

you'll need to make them gray and black first, then begin the weathering process.

Yep, just keep doing the gray/charcoal wash until they darken.
