Brand New to Fett Costume

crimson

Hunter
Hi all

I am brand new to making a Boba Fett.

There is so much information on these forums i am getting swamped ! i seen the soft armour sections and the armour templates, it makes it look all so easy !

Few Questions that I want to ask, and I know that it’s probably been asked a million times before.

Q.1 what’s cheaper to build/buy

ESB
or
ROJ

Q2. If I chose to build a set what is easier for a beginner like myself ESB or ROJ ?

Q.3 Is there a definitive list of parts with links to purchase? I want to keep costs way down low and I am UK based, so the shipping will kill me eventually since i want to do it slowly part by part over months rather than one massive order

Q4. Whats the most cost effective way to make/build this, i dont have anything but sewing machine- would it be cheep to buy a 3d printer and print my own parts or to buy casts and finish them ?

Thanks in advanced

Welcome to this crazy adventure. I´ll try to give you some answers.

Q1: ROTJ is a little bit cheaper than ESB since you don´t have the sidearm and holster (this can be expensive if you want to have the original nemrod one). It also dempend on how you want to build it. If you buy the armor parts, helmet, blaster and jetpack unpainted, price would be nearly the same for ROTJ and ESB.

Q2: Both Fetts are chalanging costumes. My opinion is that ROTJ Fett is a little bit easier to build, but you have to consider that the paintjob on the jetpack is far more chalanging than ESB. I also think the helmet is more chalanging (my opinion)

Q3: There is no definitive list of vendors. Here are a lot of talented peaple who will help you and give you a hint. For armor i can recommend Fettpride, RKD, MoW,Bobamaker (located in EU; this might be interesting for you since you have lower shipping costs and no import taxes), softparts: Arkadi, MoW and Bobamaker, metal parts: Full metal Fett, Dark side or Jodocast. These are only a few of the vendors you can find here. So take your time and check out the forums.

Q4: I think the most cost effective way is building as much as you can by yourself. There are a lot of fantastic tutuorials and build threads here. I depends on your budget, timeframe and level of accuracy you want to achive.

So take your time and browse the forums. Don´t rush and stay away from eBay with exception of MoW (Man of War), MLS and Mojo Fett.

Both Fetts are fantastic costumes and a lot of fun to build.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to repy

Looks like i will aim for ROJ then since the paint job is easier as you say.

I found these two helmets which are half the price as bobba maker:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-1-Boba-...580?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35e8a1d8bc

This one comes with everything :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Star-Wars...913?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35e8928059

And this gauntlet:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Star-Wars...590?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ae82ccb16

Again the gauntlet because its the cheepest i have seen so far

As for the soft parts i dont mind making my own, since i can sew doesnt look too hard ?

This is a very expensive costume to do well. Best bet is to read many many build threads to learn who makes what. A low figure for a nice costume is 3000$ and that's with you painting and weathering.
If its on eBay, I'd leave the helmet alone. Poorly made crap probably and you'll get good work you will be proud of here from Fettpride, animefan, Bobamaker. Take your time and be patient. Impulse decisions in this hobby typically wind up back on eBay or in the trash can.

Rules to building a quality Fett outfit.

1) Do not buy parts on ebay unless it's from Man of War Studios.....period.

2) Refer to rule #1

If you want a great helmet look up Animefan on the forums here...I think his helmets are around 140 US. Be careful though, he's Canadian so by nature he's shifty (I'm joking he's a great guy).

For Guantlets get them from Rkd...he sells the full kit for around 180 US. I personally bought my Guantlets from Boba trooper and they are spectacular tier 2 certifiable from 501st (Boba trooper is in the UK so he would be cheaper for you too).

Seriously step back and figure out what your ultimate goal is here...if you want a top notch fett made you will simply not get it from anonymous ebay folks. People on this forum take the costume 3 times more serious than Lucas arts 501st does. There are numerous differences between standards posted here and what passes at 501st, frankly because people here ENJOY researching and learning more about how the costume was created and made personal friendships with the previous Fett actors.

Wow so it looks like i have to spend quite a lot of money to get an accurate set

Does Boba trooper have a web page or anything like that ?

I know boba maker is uk based but its very expensive i was hoping to get all the armour props for £500

Is there one seller that sells all the armour- collar, chest, kidney, shoulder, knee, back, groin and back groin

And i am not sure about ROJ or ESB - because the ESB means i need to buy a pistol and Holster and they are very expensive so to keep costs down i can go for a harder to paint costume but lower cost costume overall ?

Plus in the new battlefield trailer Bobba is confirmed as alive so ROJ

Make no mistake, and I don't want to discourage you here, but both versions are difficult to paint. Don't pick based on that. Simply choose the version you like better. And if you're crafty you can scratch build a sidearm and holster. People have done that for budget costumes and it works out fine.

If you want to see a great esb suit, check out matty matts thread. His suit is one of the best I've seen.

Definitely don't let a sidearm and holster dissuade your decision. Go with your gut.
lots of great threads for paint info, as well as how to' s on many things. Best bet is to start with a lid. Even if you change your mind from an entire suit you still have a great display piece.

Crimson, Thank you for asking this question. I just joined today and plan on going on the same adventure as you. Awesome response to his question by everyone. It has been a big help and definitely a step in the right direction for us new guys.

Boba trooper makes most of the armor parts...he's sold a ton of it on this forum. Best to PM him for prices...only he would be able to tell you what it would cost. He has a facebook page as well https://www.facebook.com/DCProp

Unless you are making the armor yourself, realistically the price you are willing to pay is about half of what it will cost you to put a blah Fett suit together. Heck you can't even get one of the craptastic Rubie outfits for £300!

Its not just the Gun and Hoslter i like ROJ because of the green scarf and the gauntlets look more simple, so easier to paint on my behalf.

Thanks i will go and check it out

Thats true, still havent decided on what bucket to buy since there are so many here in the uk that are also on ebay and look top notch, if i am going to import one i am going to import the whole hard armour set

Sweet where are you based ?

One thing is for certain............cheap helmets are cheap.

mmm the pictures look good, i guess i could experement on the cheep one hone my painting skills then buy a boba maker one when i am ready.

I have the flight suit from Bobba Maker

I am good at sewing so i know i can do the belt, girth belt, leather belt, Gloves would be very time consuming along with the spats since i dont have the material and tying to find it would be hard.

So my main cost is

Helmet- 100
Gauntlets- 200
Armour- 100

The rest i can make

Guys can you link me to the best armour makers here please

Sorry man you are WAY off on that. You are forgetting several key pieces which cost a bunch of money.

1) Good luck getting a jetpack unfinished for less than £200
2) You haven't even mentioned the weapon yet....£50 to 100
3) Boots £100
4) Wookie braids £20
5) Chest armor light display £50
6) Shin tools £20

I could go on and on on parts you are missing. You simply will not make a quality Fett anywhere close to your price range. Good luck finding all the armor pieces for £100...most complete armor sets are £200 - 250.

Do not go cheap on a helmet, its a waste of your time and you will have visor installation issues later. Get a helmet from Animefan, DarthVorhees, or another reputable helmet maker on this site and save a ton of headache. £20 is worth the days of time you will spend painting that helmet....its a laborious process to do it correctly.

I would highly recommend that you spend more time researching on here before you pull any triggers. Start with this thread: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f22/new-tdh-read-about-how-much-you-will-spend-17421/

There is more than one way to build a Fett...but you also need to be realistic. Even if you make things on your own, there are material costs that you need to include in your budget - which aren't always cheap in themselves.

Look at more build threads, see what people have done, who they have bought from, etc. If you're looking to build it yourself, focus your research on scratch builds.

The skills that you will hone on a cheap helmet are not needed on a quality helmet. You will spend 50 bucks on bondo and fillers and 25 bucks on sand paper and a lot of time. The skill that you develop is how to make rough and misshapen things smooth.

You will end up spending close to the same amount on the "cheap" helmet by the time you get it to the point where you can paint it. And then you will still have a helmet with thin spots that easily looses it shape. Unless you fiberglass the inside, which is more time and money....

As you can see you will spend the money anyways.

I speak from years of watching people try to go this route. If you want to save money you can try to find a B pull from one of the quality makers. These B pulls will be far superior to the thin slush mold A pull you get on ebay.

Just for clarification. Bobamaker does make helmets, armor and such. Boba trooper makes mostly Jango armor items from what I've seen.
The lid makers are Fettpride, Animefan, ASOK, Bobamaker. Darth Vorhees has made a few, and I'm sure I missed someone. Start with good stuff, you'll end with good stuff. Mullreel was definitely on the mark with trying to polish a turd. No offense meant, it's just been done before. AND If you aren't satisfied with the paint up, you can always just repaint it. Hope that helps.

I know boba trooper made my guantlets, I don't know what armor making options he has...he's not a normal seller here on the forums. But, like bobamaker he IS a UK guy which is advantageous to the original poster of this thread.

I realized that this is going to cost me about £1000 for a level 2 certified costume, so I have decided to take my time with it, slowly build the fet over a year, I want it completed for celebration next year.
Out of those is there one person who does a complete set ? I would want to save on shipping

Yeah I think I wont rush this take my time, quality over quantity

B pulls ? ok I didn’t know they existed, whats wrong with the ebay ones they are apparently fiberglass and gel coated ?
I see your point time is money , and the less time I waste the more quality I have

Do you recommend any of these makers above the rest ? I may as well shell out £200 on bobba maker since he is European based

I know boba trooper made my guantlets, I don't know what armor making options he has...he's not a normal seller here on the forums. But, like bobamaker he IS a UK guy which is advantageous to the original poster of this thread.
Bobba Tropper does Gauntlets- I will purchase one from him since his is painted and finished at the same price as bobba maker
Bobba Trooper does not do armor

I was going to make the armor from sintra but UK Garrison do not accept this for level 1 certification, looks like it’s going to be a very expensive route ahead

To lessen the blow I will take a year to complete it buying one part each month, this way I don’t rush and get quality items

As long as it’s ready for celebration I can sacrifice my other hobby (shooting)

The ones pictured on Ebay are probably the actual helmet that the person purchased from a quality maker........they then mold someone else's work and sell the cast. It is usually a copy of a copy....which is never as good. The other thing is even though it is fiberglass a lot of the guys who recast other peoples work will end up not putting the time into making good pulls. There will be thin spots and warping. Also fiberglass can be made well or made sloppy......it depends on the craftsman.

A B pull is one that just doesn't measure up to the standards of the higher quality makers. It could be a thin spot or a blemish. But with most of your ebay guys you are 100 percent going to get thin spots and blemishes.

Just take your time and educate yourself.....which is seems like you are doing.........and you will end up with a good product.
