it is called "sinew"....it is kind of waxy in texture, not like thread...it sticks to itself...you see it in Indian artwork, dreamcatchers for example...

You can get artificial sinew from many fabric/hobby stores. I know in the Atlanta area you can get it at Wal-Mart, JoAnn's Fabrics, Michael's and Hobby Lobby.
