Boots: Dye or paint?

How many of you guys dye your boots rather than use acrylic paint? Is there a pro or con to either? Just got my MoW size 12's and I'm debating which way I should go...

Thanks!

BCB, I used a series of washes.... dyluted paint. It allows you to layer the weathering until you have it where you like... and you can focus on certain areas and shapes just like painting.

I *just* finished painting mine with acrylics. No layering or complicated stuff though,

you know its funny.. i am just about to paint mine too, and i was going to ask the same question last night... the acrylics look great.. what color did you end up using just black and a gray? did you water it down a ton or did you just cake it on and rub it in? :)

The black is just semi gloss straight from the jar. The grey is about a 50/50 mix of black and white. I used a flat brush for acrylics to brush it on. No paint was watered down, btw. Hope this helps! :)

Are you using just acrylic craft paints? I'm worried the paint would come off easily from the outer sole when it gets wet.

Yeah, ordinary craft paints. I haven't gotten them wet yet so I have no idea if the paint comes off from a little rain. But it should be easy to touch up. It's some kind of acrylic lacquer paint if that helps.

I did mine last night.. I used Acrylic it looks really good too..

Here are a few little tips i have for Acrylic paint:

- When you paint make sure you have one of the angle brushes. a long with the other brushes it helps when you are trying to get into some of the tight spaces without getting it on the sole.

- When you go by the paint, instead of buying black and white and mixing them there is a 50/50 mix grey color, that way its a uniform color.. remember you will be dirtying them up too..

- The best brushes to use are a synthetic brush (easy to clean) I just bought a pack of different sizes cheap at the craft store

- Don't let the paint dry on the brush.. if you need to set it down or something clean the brush really quick with soap and water.. i just had a glass of Dial hand soap and water and it worked great..

most of these tips i got from a buddy of mine that was an Art School Grad.

hope they help!

I think the small unevenness grey shades paint adds to the dirty look. But that's just me, and it wasn't intentional. If you aren't like me, get grey paint. It's a lot easier than mixing and trying to get the same shade every time. :)
