Bobby Fett UK's Scratch Built Jet Pack

Hi Denters

I have just started to scratch build a jet pack and thought I would share. This is my second bite of the cherry, my first pack is almost complete, here it is....

Still needs some painting to finish.

Anyway....I have learned loads from my practice pack and now feel ready to iron out the areas which were not quite right with the first pack for one reason or another.

My objective here is to get as screen accurate as I can and then maybe cast and offer packs like the other budget Fett items that have been listed recently, but for this to happen I would need help ad advise as I have never cast something like this...anyway some photos.

Day 1 (6 hours) Most of the sintra parts are cut to size. I use a basic craft knife and take my time, trying to get the correct edge, straight of beveled as equired.

The fuel tanks are a little low due to nothing to hold them in place yet.

Sorry for the poor quality photos, will do better in the future!

This is going together so well, every thing lines up as it should and fits together perfectly. I have used superglue to get the initial purchase, then a weld style seal inside with a hot glue gun, will try and get a shot of this and post it. I should also mention I am using WOF 16.5" templates and they are amazing, big thanks to Alan and Gav.

I only spent about 5 hours on her tonight as I feel a bit rough, sore throat :0(

Day 3 (5 hours - total hours 19) I started to work on the missile housing section. For this I cut a section of siintra, heated with my heat gun and then used my 'bottle of coke' rolling pin. I shaped as required to get the best circle/cylinder I could. I intend to tidy this up with bondo later. I used the hot glue gun 'weld' method again and got a photo of it to.

Once I was happy with the cylinder I moved on to the curved section behind the missile housing. Now for this I had no template, but after a little trial and error sussed out the way to get it just right. I did not get a close up of this, but here is the pack as of right now. Almost forgot, I also spent some time laminating sintra for the raised sections on the main cylinder section of the body, these now need to be sanded to the correct shape.

Thanks guys. Feeling much better now Gav thanks....lemsip max!

Hey Normit, I have used 5mm for the back, bottom and top shelf (x2) and 3mm for the rest of the pack. The main cylinder is guttering and the fuel cells are the correct size pipe, I dont know what it is used for and they were sourced and supplied by someone with amaizing attention to detail (thanks again Gav). They are 72mm diamiter if I remember correctly and they are perfect, which helps the build and will save time later.

Day 4 (8 hours - total hours 27)

I have been working on the exhaust vent, which is now almost complete, I just need to add the slots and I had no drill available. I also got the raised sections of the main body added, I ditched the laminated ones in favour of the original templated ones, worked out quicker. So here are photos of it at the moment.

I need to finish the exhaust vent, add the detailed recess section to the rear, cut and finish the missile housing, bondo where required and add the piano keys and front section. Maybe 15 hours left.....we shall see.

Phil, good question, I would like to cast this pack, now I have got it how I want it. I think the budget Boba items that are going on are great and maybe with some help on how to make a mould of this complex shape, cast could be sold at a decent price. I would not want to be building scratch too often at something like 40 hours a pop.

what size pvc pipes are you using?? i have a 4.5" wide center but i am have trouble getting the right look on the side pipes. 2.5" for the sides?

*@?!\|}-+=>.......... Speak English boy.. From memory the side sections are 72mm and 188mm long - but I am using the 16.5" patterns, not the 15" (or studio scale?) On my first pack I went with 67mm, which is a common down pipe section for rain water guttering. As for the centre section, I used a section of guttering, which looked pot on when I offered it up to the templates, I was gonna use the guttering to form foam board over, but the plastic guttering was bang on...happy days.

Also, here is a small update.

I got a rocket and missile turned, now these are not going to be used because I want to redo them and get closer to the screen used missile, but you get the idea.

I also want to slim the missile housing and improve the detailing to the top section, but this project is moving along well.
