    Jun 26, 2014, 9:32 AM - Boba Fett Spurs sound? #1

I was just musing how cool it would be if you were able to duplicate the sound of spurs as you were walking in your costume.

The movies had the jingling sound edited in, but I was wondering if there was a way to create the sound IRL without adding.. you know.. spurs

I was thinking about maybe small bells hidden somewhere or something else that would rattle to make the noise hidden somewhere in the fabric in the jumpsuit around the lower calf.

    Thoughts?

I've actually thought about this in passing. If you really wanted to over-complicate things and go for a techie solution, you could potentially set up some piezo triggers in your boots and wire them to small flat speakers. This is the technology that drives electronic drums. basically when you "hit" it, it sends a signal to trigger a particular sound. You would need a small computer brain to store the audio sample and send a signal to a speaker when triggered. As I said way overcomplicated

There was someone on here that was talking about making a spur sound setup for your shin tool pouches...but I haven't seen it in a long while.

The bell option has been done, although I haven't heard samples. Low pitch jingle bells from a craft store seem to be ideal. I know some that just have keys in their thigh pouches. It's really personal preference.

I had thought about doing this but then decided against it. I think in tandem with the badass sound of the spurs was the slow, calculated walk that Fett has. This may sound a bit silly, but I'm naturally a fast walker, so I tried to slow it down to Fett speed, matching my walk with the sound of the spurs. A bit too slow for me to do consistently. And when you speed up, it doesn't sound like spurs anymore, more like jingle bells on a sleigh. Lol.

I have a pair of side zip combat boots that when I wear under a pair of jeans will make that kind of spur sound as your heal strikes the ground.

Was thinking of rigging something like a metal zipper with a big metal pull under my flightsuit as low on my legg as possable. Maybe even fabricate something custom from scratch.

    Ha! Boba Claus.

Actually, I bet that two or three heavy washers would sound pretty close if you could find a way to have them free enough to be consistent. I agree that the pace of the walk is really what made this work in the film. Can you imagine the ruckus if spurs were clanking when he was chasing Vader down the hallway? Force choked for sure.

I just purchased some 0.5" 'jingle bells' from my local fabric store. I'll throw my jumpsuit on really quick and take a video of the sound. Not sure how well it will come out though. In person it sounds pretty damn cool.

That's IS pretty damn cool bcurtis

Where did you put them in your jupsuit? Do they jingle a lot when you're not walking?

Thanks! I put them in the pouches where the shin tools go. I currently have 8 or 9 in each, but am considering taking it down to 6 or 7. It doesn't jingle at all when I'm not walking. Not bad for a 99 investment. lol

Sounds pretty awesome and it's really a bit that I love about the character. Being able to add this to the suit is going to make it that much more fun.

I tried 0.375" and 0.25" but the 0.5" were the best imo. I stood there in the aisle jingling bells for 15 minutes. lol

excellent dude...lol..I've been looking at maybe buying actual spurs and putting them in pockets, has any one here got spurs to test this theory?

To produce the sound, I know they attached the spurs some how behind the knees connected to the knee pads.
But bcurtis's bell trick is pretty sick; I might give that a try.

I the ILM video that shows the white super trooper suit, Ben Burtt talks about the spurs. I assumed the sound was added later. But is the super trooper suit in that video emitting a space ship interior type sound? Burtt mentions "telemetry and feedback", but it sound like a sound effect that is not mic feed back.

Yes, there is a 'space ship' or 'computer related feedback' noise that is in the background. I thought it would be another cool environmental feature to have this repeating on a small iPod and make use of the mp3 input on my aker. If you need the file, PM your email and I will send it to you.

Bcurtis, dude, that is ridiculously BADASS...I have been wondering about the spur sound for my ESB Boba as well with a friend of mine. I think your method works really effectively. Isn't it funny what the simplest things can do? lol...

I've long thought a possibility might be to make something a bit like the heel on a flamenco boot. A metal cap with space behind it so it chimes rather than just being a metallic 'clack'. Tybalt's boots in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet are a nice example of this. His entrance gives a lovely close-up:

Okay bro, it's simple, just get spurs...
Haha just kidding, But, in order to have that sound, be creative man. I have multiple suggestions.

One is to get a metal rod or thin sheet rod. I call it a sheet rod as stupid as that sounds because its those long lengths of steel that are flat, not a rod.

Anyways get metal is your objective here and think creatively, use your head in terms of physics. What thickness of metal, length and other factors are going to affect the sound of the clinking, how many individual pieces of metal should be on one rope or band around your leg? What should be your arrangement of the metals to make the proper clinking sound? Use your beautiful and unique head and imagine what it will all be like. You know physics just play with it!

ALTHOUGH that is extremely unsafe and I do not reccomend someone walk into a convention center with a bunch of metal rods hanging down at your ankles. Now use your same imagination and imagine if there was an emergency and you tripped and fell onto the metal..

So yeah that should ever be done unless it's contained in a metal container which is just silly.

One other suggestion is, using metal again, get washers or something that will make noise, metals such as steel make good noise, alluminum is soft and wont get any clink sound.

Anyways have small rods on a system that simply wraps around your legs with the washers all on the rods. So each time you walk, from the gravity the washers will come up and clink down. Although that would take almost possibly stomping! Give me a few hours and I'll come up with more ideas!

Another way is to program a motion sensitive speaker so that everytime you hit the floor at a good normal pace it will play a HQ spur sound. That you can recreate with use of metal objects and tools just as the sound effects people did for stuff like that. Now of course they could have just gotten a spur and used its sound which is what I think they did but get creative with it and be safe! Those first examples are just to expand your horizon to physics because having metal rods dangling around your angles is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. You do not want metal rods sticking out of your leg...
