BlackCatBone's Boba

BlackCatBone

Active Hunter
Hey, guys. So I've been lurking for a bit now and ordering all my parts. Thought I'd show my progress on a RotJ SE Boba. I'm a graphic designer by day, so I think I'm going to free hand most of the wear patterns side by side with movie stills. Anyway, on with the show...

I went out and bought/ordered most of the paint I need. I have some still on their way from Amazon, though...

paints.jpg

So far, I've dyed my girth w/ Mini-Wax water soluble China Red.

girth2.jpg

I got my MoW RotJ Gauntlets

gaunts.jpg

and I've taped off (Green Frog Tape) and primed (Rustoleum Pro Primer) them...

IMG_0073.JPG

And given them a coat of Rustoleum Metallic Aluminum...
IMG_0075.jpg

Meanwhile, I got my MoW Jetpack...

IMG_0069.jpg

And I've started to assemble that with Gorilla Super Glue...

IMG_0077.JPG

Today I'll be assembling the 3/4" PVC framework inside for the thrusters, and doing a paint test on some scrap with the masking fluid I bought before I tackle the weathering on the gauntlets.

I've also got armor ordered from BobaMaker, and I'm waiting to hear back from FettPride on placing an order for more armor and a bucket. I've ordered a bunch of stuff from you awesome folks, too! An EE-3 from Sidewinder, Wookie braids from Woodman, Jetpack hooks and a diver buckle from BooBooFett, and Toe spikes and gauntlet darts from Mojo-Fett. Most of my soft parts are being made by my wife, who sews like the wind. I'm chomping at the bit for some MoW boots and a second bucket so I can do both an ESB and a RotJ helmet.

I'd like to give a special thanks to everyone on TDH. You guys are a kind an invaluable resource.

I'll update more in this thread as my work progresses. Thanks!

Ah! You glued the caps on the jetpack like I did. Makes it kind of hard to get behind them with the rattle cans. Check out Slave1's thread(s) for reference on painting the jp, good luck!

Yeah, and I realized I glued that middle joint in the rocket, when it was snug enough to remain unglued for transporting in 2 pieces. Oh well.

Final assembly on the jetpack:

Thanks! I recommend making the side holes for the thrusters a little small and then sanding them until they're just wide enough to be snug. I used a 1" hole cutting bit on my drill, and then wrapped a piece of sandpaper around my finger to sand the hole until it was just a little bigger. Works awesome, the thrusters won't rattle around and there's no visible gap like there might be if the hole was a little too big.

Yeah, well, the last thing I need is to pull a bonehead move and glue something upside down or backwards or whatever. Would be just my luck.

Sadly, it's too humid to do any painting here in New England today, but I'm dying to start layering paint on my gauntlets.

There are far better pics in the gallery for reference. I don't care if you use my pics (I'm honored actually), but you'd be better off using real reference.

That sucks about the humidity. We don't have much of that here in the Southern California Desert.
I can paint somewhere around 300 days a year easily. In fact, I'm painting this weekend (after I do yard work,of course ;) )

Didn't know it was yours. It was strictly for assembly ref. Never thought to use it for paint reference. I'm not there yet with the jetpack.

Weekly Update!

So I put together my 3/4" PVC rig for the jetpack:

IMG_0083.jpg

Then cleaned up the outside and primed it:
IMG_0108.jpg

In the meantime, I got my diver's buckle from BooBooFett:
IMG_0101.jpg

And started going at my cape with a rotary cutting tool:
IMG_0094.jpg

IMG_0091.jpg

Back to the gauntlets -- I added my "macro damage" with liquid mask...
IMG_0102.jpg

Before giving them a coat of red primer...
IMG_0110.jpg

And the first completely finished piece of my armor!
IMG_0114.jpg

I primed it gray, then Rustoleum Aluminum. Then went over it with 0000 steel wool. Added my layer of liquid mask. Then most of the black was applied by brush with Testor's Flat Black and Testor's Copper.
IMG_0122.jpg

Removed the liquid mask, and then (believe it or not) took it out to the gravel driveway and rub it around in the rocks a bit. Then I dipped a paper towel in Testor's black and massaged in the paint to the tiny gouges that the gravel made, wiping off as I went so it only stuck to the micro abrasions and made them more obvious. I may continue this with the rest of the armor. My gravel driveway has become my secret weapon... weird!

Question for you guys about the jetpack -- when painting your jp, do you do a layer of silver over the whole thing (like you would the bucket, or gauntlets)? Or do you apply silver as you tape off the different sections? Thanks!

Lots going on in the last few days. Most bizarre of which, is this guy, who now stands naked from the neck down...

IMG_0132.jpg

I had no idea how hard it would be to find a mannequin to match my height and build. This mannequin came closest to matching me. He's just an inch shorter, and has the exact same waist measurement as I do.

And just for fun, I gave him a little ink...

IMG_0137.jpg

I sprayed the final red on the gauntlets (I went with Rustoleum Cabernet. I compared it to Claret Wine, and the Cabernet is a little less purple, and a little darker.) and then dusted them with flat black. Followed by darkening some areas with even more flat black to make "scorch marks". The liquid mask I was using turned out to be ****. But by the time I discovered this, I had already used it on the gauntlets. It turned into a nightmare. Once I sprayed the final red on the gauntlets, I started peeling off the liquid mask and it began to peel up other layers beneath it. I spent hours trying to gingerly remove the liquid mask. Sometimes it ended up peeling everything right down to the white resin.

IMG_0143.jpg

Luckily, with touch-ups, I managed to save the day, and in the end, I'm pretty happy. I added more scratches and pock marks with a screwdriver, a car key and some gravel.

IMG_0153.jpg

A new bottle of Windsor Newton Masking Fluid came in, and I'll be testing that soon. The old stuff is going in the trash.

All I have left to do with the gauntlets is go over them with Testor's Dullcoat (a flat clear), install the switches I bought at RadioShack, and add the custom aluminum gauntlet darts I got from Mojo-Fett. Speaking of which... here are the gauntlet darts and toe spikes for the boots. Beautiful.

IMG_0148.jpg

Also, I received the ammo belt -- hand made leather by Mel Mattson -- and boy, did she do a hell of a job. I still have to age it a bit, and add grommets to the back so I can cinch the belt with leather lacing.

IMG_0147.jpg

In other news, the wife and I went to the fabric store and picked out the material she's going to use to make the flak vest that the chest and shoulder armor attach to.

And because I'm a geek, I bought this for myself, online:

IMG_0151.jpg

It's been rainy here all weekend, so I can't finish the gauntlets yet, but soon. Then I'll get started on the Jetpack's paint job.

Weekly update!

I haven't really been able to paint anything all week. Stupid New England humidity. But the good news is that I finished my gauntlets!

left1.jpgleft2.jpgright1.jpgright2.jpg

And I finished scuffing up my leather belt, as well as adding the grommets. I bought some rawhide leather lacing to cinch them together.

gromets.jpgscuff1.jpgscuff2.jpg

In other news, my belt pouches came in. Going to have to dirty them up a bit.

pouches.jpg

And I bought decals for my jetpack, shoulder bells and helmets (I'm doing both a Return of the Jedi for my armor, and a Empire Strikes Back just for fun (SE?) I bought decals from a bunch of different folks so I can pick my favorites. Probably sell the unused ones.

decals.jpg

And most exciting news: I scored an UN-PAINTED Terminal Fettler helmet on eBay! TF #23! I made sure I confirmed it with Terminal Fettler himself first. Can't wait to get it! I'm going to have a TF and a GMH!

Weekly update:

I decided to work on the most complicated area of the jetpack, first: The yellow areas on the main body of the unit. These sections seem like they will take the most masking so I might as well get them out of the way.

taped.jpg

Missing some photos here. But I laid down some Windsor Newton liquid mask before moving on to a layer of Rustoleum aluminum. Then another layer of liquid mask.

Then:

I decided to also use cut up garbage bags as extra protection to any areas that I didn't want accidentally misted. A little insurance policy. I propped the jetpack up on a bucket so that I had better access to the bottom edges, and laid down two base coats of the line painting yellow.

basecoat.jpg

Once it was dry, it was time to bust out the art skills. Slowly, over the course of two hours, I laid down very fine mists of 1) Orange, 2) Dk Gray, 3) Bronze, 4) Light yellow, 5) more Line Painting yellow, 6) Black. And ended up with this:

tones1.jpg

cu1.jpg

cu2.jpg

cu3.jpg

Later on, I peeled off the masking fluid to reveal the underneath (But forgot to take a photo of that...)

Most of the taping I did for the yellow could stay on for the blue, so I took some tape off, and put some on. There are about three layers of tape on this now!

IMG_0243.jpg

First up, I added some liquid mask:

IMG_0245.jpg

Then hit it with Rustoleum Aluminum:

IMG_0246.jpg

Then peeled off the liquid mask and put a new layer of liquid mask and sprayed it blue.

IMG_0248.jpg

Once the weather dries out, I'll do one more base coat of blue, then add all the grungy tones.

On other fronts, I misted my cape with black to grunge it up. Another piece 100% done.

capetones.jpg

And I got the lenses in the mail for the two helmets I'll be making.

lenses.jpg

Meanwhile, the first of my two helmets came in! Designed by Terminal Fettler in the UK, I managed to win an eBay auction for "#23". I emailed him to make sure this was authentic. He confirmed that it was.

IMG_0264.jpg

IMG_0268.jpg

Unfortunately, the lense that came with it is cracked, but that's okay. I'll make a new one using one of my welding shields.

I've decided not to paint this helmet until my other one comes in (A "GMH" model by FettPride) -- so that I can decide which one fits best, and which one will be painted as Return of the Jedi and which will be Empire Strikes Back.

The lens in my Terminal Fettler helmet was cracked... :(

So I cut out a new one from a welding mask:

Tada!

Then, I just did a ton of work on the jetpack this week. I'll let the photos tell the story:
