AOTC Flexable armor?

The stuff they made the real armor out of. what is it. I noticed In AOTC that when jango swings around and looks over the skirt of the komino landing platform that the armor they used is extreamley flexible. Im intetested because it would be nice to have some Boba armor that doesnt tear off the vest when I lean over to pick somthing up. It would be nice to get someone to produse this flexible stuff. (expecialy for the Back plates) anyone have any ideas?

:D

I noticed that too. It was like sheet rubber. Maybe he was wearing a set of stunt armor so to say. Is there a silverized rubber? I can see paint chips flying...hmm, perhaps that explains all the paint chips offf of bubba.

I dont know. mayby they used a really soft silver paint like the one that guy used on his helmet in the jango forum. does anyone happen to know one of the guy's who worked on the costumes in AOTC? any body got conections? but I dont even know if rubber can even bend as much as it did In AOTC without tearing. but also It didnt really deform the vest eather. it was like it was part of the vest.

The armor for that scene may have been made of latex. I toyed around with the idea of casting chest armor in latex, but ran into the chipping paint thing. Perhaps the armor can be molded using silver-based latex, but at the time, I knew nothing about it.

I still wouldn't mind having a codpiece made of latex...aw yeah...

:) hmm, i just loved teh game "bounty hunter" still do but... well in teh game jango runs, jumps, does summersaults (even without jet pack), roles and so on... but my fett bein now almost doen...and seein rotj behind teh scene footage... its kinda of bein teh most unrealistic game ever!!

I CAN HARDY WALK!!!! can hardly see anythign clear, especially in teh dark... let alone run... the jet pack strangles me and that bein a light weight kit... i cant move my hands cause when i think im somewhere with my hands im not and vice versa... zero feelin in my finegr tips due to teh gloves... need i go on?

maybe i exagerate a little :p

anyways... bend-able armor would eb cewl... like in the game bounty hunter...

I noticed that on the first night we saw the movie. I pointed it out to my wife, also....

More than likely, it's either latex or neoprene (see Thurston James' book on prop making) that was probably cast with the metallic silver in it so that it didn't have to be painted, or painted very little. It's definately not CG, because the CG wouldn't bend the armor that way.

Someone has said that there was a metal set also, most likely what we see on the floor in the 'closet' when Obi Wan drops by. I can't imagine someone wearing the metal armor for very long.

The scene with the "rubber" armor is the scene on Kamino when Obi Wan and Jango are fighting. Obi Wan is hanging off the edge of the landing platform from the grappling hook attached to Jango's gauntlet. Jango sits forward to detach the wire from his gauntlet and his chest armor folds. Its not CGI its just a stunt suit that enables him to actually have the flexibility he needs for that scene.

I have had a bit of experience in this,

The armour was most probably cold cast in foam rubber, then painted with "pax Paint", which is basically paint mixed with spirit gum which helps it stretch and move.

It wouldnt be to hard to sculpt the armour and the front of the vest as one piece, mold it, cold cast it and then glue it all down onto a vest, that way, it would all move together

The same thing can be done with latex.
Mixing acrylic paints with latex gives it color, and he paint doesn't chip.
Coating the latex with Isoflex will help protect the latex.

I've seen 'leather' armour made in this way, so there's no reason at all that Mandalorian Armour couldn't be done like it.

Or, make it from leather.
Cured and dyed leather can look quite plasticy (is that even a word) from a distance (just look at Samurai armour)

I know this is an old thread but has any body tried making a piece of armor out of Lexan to see if it replicates that scene? In thin form it's the same stuff that they make RC Car bodies out of (the ones that you see in hobby shops) It can take a lot of abuse, It's very flexible and unless heated will spring back to it's original form, about the same thickness a 18ga steel (in sheet form), Clear and can be painted from the inside and if painted correctly will not chip or flake with heavy bending. And it can be vacuum formed.
Lexan in thick form around 1" thick or more is used to make bullet proof glass.

If I were to take a stab at it Id say they ran the pieces in foam latex. Its the same thing that prosthetic makeups use to transform actors into this. The reason I say this is I am an FX artist and know that almost all the time when they need great detail for a stunt suit they use foam latex for the suit. All the batman suits and such are all foam latex for the stunts. Foam can be painted using various paints but PAX paint is very common. Its basically acrylic paint mixed with a prosthetic adhesive called Pros Aide. This in turn makes the paint very flexible and won't chip or flake. You can add glosses and such to the paint to give it more of a metallic finish. They also sell very bright chrome paints that can be used to paint the suit that are also flexible. Just my thoughts on the flexible armor.
