Alternative Wookie Braid Material

Hey Guys,

I received the bulk of the braided doll hair just waiting for a couple more packages then I'll divvy them out accordingly.

I don't know if this helps, but I've seen some braided rope at Michael's, the hobby store. I don't recall how it was braided. Supposedly the 2-bundle braid is actually three bundles. They have all sorts of colors. Perhaps those can be used.

In the hair extensions industry, they use monofiber or monofilament. The idea is that hair is not a single color. Each strand may vary slightly in shade and color. Occasionally you might come across a graying or discoloring hair (aging, sun damage, etc.). That can add to some realism. A hairdresser I knew explained to me how she'd study someone's hair color and try to mix and match different monofiber colors until she got a realistic match. Once the hair extensions were on, they looked incredibly realistic.

However, this route could be a bit pricier than the braided rope at Michael's.

Hi Mac,

Yeah, I thought I might try using a little bit of dry brushing to achieve the different color strands using craft paint. Thanks for info about hair extensions, good to know stuff!

UPDATE:

All orders went out this morning. Expect the packets to arrive in about a week or so. My vendor ran out of the braided golden blonde but she threw in some curly golden blonde and some braided sunshine yellow as a substitute. I also managed to get some braided black hair. So you will all get braided light brown, braided dark brown, braided black, braided sunshine yellow and curly golden blonde which I will try to braid myself.

Thanks!

I actually found this exact product at Michaels craft store yesterday. I bought 3, Blonde, brown and a second set of brown which I spray painted black. They look like they will work great. (y)

Awesome Cojake! Yeah, unfortunately, the local Michael's has stopped carrying the braided wavy and crimped doll hair. Let's see some WIP pics!

And again reverse pyschology worked on the Postal Service :D lol... :p hehe got them today, and they are great... one question though... what do i do with the curls? :p

cheers once again :D 1 parcel down, 4 to go :S

Hi Matt,

Glad you received them today! About the curls, you can try to braid them or maybe iron them out and then braid them. I have yet to try and work on them...haven't go the time to work on my ROTJ Fett coz of family matters. Good luck and let me know how it worked out for you!

i would say dont. lol the curls suck!! i couldnt get them to seperate enough to even flat iron them, let alone find the ends to start braiding. and when you do get them lined up, you will find that if you can braid them the braid will be about pencil thin :/

maybe you can find a doll making friend who can use them?

or do like me and get angry at the black set of curls, fluff it all up and tape it to your face and run around your apartment claiming to be Black Beard and that you will run them all through if the scurvy bilge rats refuse to walk the plank. But, thats just me.
