Accurate vest discussion
EDIT Dec. 2012: Topic changed again to reflect the general vest discussion.
EDIT: Topic changed. Does anyone have any reference photos of a screen used Boba flak vest without the back armor? Particularly interested to see the slots for the jetpack hooks.
---------------------------------------------------------
I need to upgrade my flak vest and have been looking at Bobamaker's. Fett experts, who makes the most accurate one hands down? :)
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
-
Bobamaker ain't bad either
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Does his/her's have the patches on the back for the jetpack straps and the harness bars?
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
My Bobamaker Flakvest has the two stitched cutouts for the harness straps (I use a Mojo/BobbyFettUK harness) but I have to roll the back of the vest up to expose the harness bars. It's not visable as the JetPack covers it. Hope that helps.
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Sorry, I meant does Crazy4bobafett's have the stitched patches for the straps and bars.
I have been talking to Bobamaker about his. Thanks.
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Anypics of any of the works? I'm in the process of making my own.

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Marcus, buddy. Clothears costumes have been working on a vest project for some time. As I was asking so much they made me one, man it is sweet. Tackle Twill, and tackle twill lined. They spent forever coming back to me talking about the way it is stitched and about different variants of the vest. Knowing your level of accuracy I think you need to talk to them. I know they are looking at it agian in light of the 360 from the blu ray.
I will try to post some photos up.
ps, did you get that email bro?
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
I'm looking forward to seeing this, Rob!
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
KB,
:fettesb I'll have screen accurate flak vests and jumpsuits around Christmas time...Their being made as we speak!
Hope this helps..

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Rob, I'd love to see some pics of your vest. Also yours Christian. The sad fact is, the vest is one thing that hasn't been done as accurately as every other part of the costume thus far, including the neck -- both material and pattern. I had my own project going on this but my seamstress dropped out. Its important to note there are all kinds of poly pro twills out there. Just being tackle twill doesn't make it accurate. There are different blends, etc. I have yet to see anyone nail the material. Looking forward to seeing new attempts. I have TK-409 and Bobamaker vests and though they are not bad, I found myself disappointed with them both.
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
It's been a long time since I posted here and even longer that I worked on my Boba Fett but I too am in need of finally using my accurate material to have a vest and neckseal made . Hopefully a new generation of accuracy can be discovered as I think this is the year I actually get my suit done! Looking forward to hearing more on this subject
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
I too may be looking to upgrade my vest. Im hoping to drop another 40lbs or so in the coming months and will need a new vest to fit me correctly once i drop the weight. That said, if i can find a more accurate one, id be down for it. I have a LSFU vest, which to me is nice and i dont have any complaints about really (aside from there not being any cuts in it for the harness) but then i never really did heavy research on the vest as i was happy with what i had. But id be curious to see the one you mentioned Rob and also yours Christian.
Nice to see ya here Hand-Schaub..i was talking to you last year about Cylon stuff on "by your command" and ended up not going for it at the time. I still have one on my to do list though!
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
:fettesb They're arriving any day now!
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
My vest came from BobaMaker, I'm very pleased with the quality. Whether it's bang on accurate or not I've no idea, but it does look the part.
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
I may be in need of a new vest too, so I'm interested in seeing anything that might be available.

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
you know, i have Bobamaker right now and i really like it, but the more i look at it the more it looks a bit off... I'd be interested in seeing the MOW ones too... is there a link someplace?

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Has anyone got the new MoW vest?

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Not sure if this is the new one every one is talking about, but this is the MOW vest I just received a couple of weeks ago, the neck seal is separate.

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Bat Ninja Just did a run IMHO his is best but thats just me
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
There should not be a seam around the bottom of the vest BTW
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Dont want to start an argument gents, but Im going for an SE Fett, and a seam around the bottom can clearly be seen in the SE Fett pics in the gallery, AND, in other versions it seams that the actual seam is tucked under the edge so it would only be visible from the inside of the vest- Just saying, there are a few different versions of everything when Fett is involved and there are a few great suppliers with their own take on things and they are all good in their own rights.

I'm just going to offer my opinion. Feel free to disagree. But I studied this very closely over the years. The bottom seam you see is in fact a single join seam between the backing and the front material. The reason it is visible out in front in the reference photos from the traveling displays is due to SAG of the backing material and the filler inside the original vests (which are very old!). The sag has caused the bottom seam to be exposed over time. The seam originally was not visible from the front. You will not find any photos from any of the original film shoots in 1979 and 1982 which show that bottom seam visible in the front like that. And also, the backing material (inside of the vest) on the original was not any sort of reflective or shiny material. It was a heavier cotton material -- another reason for the sag. so for it to be accurate, as far as SE, it has to be a sagging seam, where the backing material is sagging, not an actual seam that goes all the way through from front to back at the bottom (creating a lip) like I see on the MOW vest.

+1 with Luffo and S1P :thumbsup

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
its not an argument its a discussion unless theres name calling ;)
But like I had said before and will say again there should be no seam, even in the promo pics if you look close there isnt a seam, its the backing which is the same fabric inside out?

As far as the backing being the same material as the front of the vest, from what I have seen of the inside shows a different fabric than the outside. There are not many production photos of the inside but the few there are show a different, darker fabric, and if you take a look at the super huge photos in the galleries of the traveling exhibits, you can get in close enough on that bottom seam in several pics to see that there is a different weave and color on that sagging backing material. You can see in the attached pic from one of the exhibits how the backing weave looks very similar to the weave of the cotton flightsuit. It does not appear to me to be the same as the material on the front of the vest. But I am no expert on fabric.

And I agree, Im not saying MoW has the absolute most movie accurate vest, simply that the seam can be seen, and again I agree it is a slightly different stitch, and other suppliers have their quirks here and there as well- in the end gentlemen (or lady fetts) its your personal preference which suppliers you decide to purchase from. Happy hunting!!

Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Armydad not challenging you at all bro, if you've ever taken a look at Kurtyboy (the original poster) thread on his never ending upgrades you would know he is all about the accuracy and not price or anything like that, so dont take offense to me or anyone saying that something isnt accurate and all that, just stating the facts.
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
None taken by any means, and I understand wanting full accuracy, its an awesome goal to set- we're all Fett fans here after all :cheers

Even if that were true, it doesn't have a completely different weave.

Yes it does and the vest is shiney side and the neckseal is the dull side.
I have to agree with sag on the lining causing the visible seam on the lower edge. Esp as ancient as the fabric is.
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Let's see those new accurate vests! MoW? Clothears?
-
Re: Who makes the most screen accurate Boba Fett flak vest available?
Does anyone have any reference photos of a screen used Boba flak vest without the back armor? Particularly interested to see the slots for the jetpack hooks.

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
what you are looking for is in the background of this picture...
Boba Fett Return of the Jedi Costume - BTS - The Dented Helmet Gallery
on the left, someone is holding the flak vest. You can clearly see the righthand slot for the jetpack strap.
It is from the greatest birthday in the history of the world.

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Wow! I hadn't seen that photo before and thanks for pointing it out.
Well looks like the 'most accurate flak vest available' needs some modifications now before I buy one LOL!
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
I talked to Christian. He is up for making modifications. I haven't had a chance to follow up. Keep us informed!
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
OOhhh... that extra seam running horizontally above the jetback hook slots! We can't do without that! :thumbsup
I've been talking to Clothears as recommended by RS. Looks good but needs some changes.
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
That seam does (edit) NOT (edit) appear on all the vests. There is a slight difference between ESB/PP1/2/3 and the ROTJ vest. The vest shown in that picture is a stunt version of the vest I believe and does not share the details of the ESB/PP style.
Here is the back of the PP2 vest.

I really wish somebody would make a more accurate vest. Not just the details, the patterns need to be new as well.
Kurtyboy, I knew the RS guys were planning one with Clothears. I never saw a pattern before Rob got very busy wit stormtroopers. If you have seen it can you PM me?
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Now those are great pics.
I agree. We need a more accurate vest. Pattern and material in current versions are not really very close.
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Alison at Clothears just pointed out those PP2 vest photos to me. Man have I been lazy, I've only viewed a fraction of the reference photos at TDH.... there's just so many of them!
Clothears have indeed made a vest to RS' specs.

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
With these photos of the PP2 vest it seems to taper in at the waist. Seriously 'fitted'! All the replicas seem to just go straight down.
Clothears on the left, original on the right.

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Anyone know the correct number of padded strips on each sleeve? I'm getting 16 or 17.
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
hmmm... have them put it on a fitting form or something. It'll be easier to compare the problem areas. But it looks to me like that is completely the wrong fabric. It shines like silk. The originals do not have that kind of shine, and the difference is not simply due to weathering. The highlights on the replica are stronger at higher levels of incidence than the original which has spec highlights pile up more straight-on to the observer. That fabric is also WAY too heavy. It drapes entirely differently. Not even close.

I'm surprised they took that pattern to prototype. It needs alot of work.
Kurtyboy, are you now advising them on how to improve it?
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
I am trying to advise changes. But do all the vests use the same pattern? The PP2 pictured tapers in at the waist because they have pulled the front and back sections together as can be seen by the v shape formed along the bottom edge:
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/galle...Armor-2-10.png
Are the RotJ/MoM/AoSW vests also like this at the side seams?
Clothears are using tackle twill.
- - - Updated - - -
Also, clothears have 14 padded strips on each sleeve. I count 16, is this correct?
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Away from reference atm so no pictures.
The vest tapers a bit but not as much as it appears in those pictures.
.The ROTJ/MOM vest has a single seam on the side and a bit of swoop towards the front.
I would have to look but I think 16 ribs is correct.
Please PM me about the projects status kurtyboy.
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
where is the evidence the originals were tackle twill? I have never seen it. I do not think that is correct. Either that or tackle twill they used for the originals is radically different from what is commonly termed tackle twill today. That stuff is too shiny and too heavy.
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Agreed. Tackle twill isn't a bad match but it's not perfect. Everyone start looking for a good match in the polyester realm I would say.
I am already working on it but it requires samples and good communication with fabric companies to get anything solid.
I would head up a gloves project as well if we knew that material.
-
Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
There is no evidence of it being tackle twill. It was just the most accurate looking fabric that had been discovered back around 2002-2003 (may even have been earlier but that was before my time here). My last vest was made in 2004 hence the use of tackle twill.
I have already asked Clothears if they can come up with something similar but not as heavy or as shiny. Fingers crossed.

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Yeah, I agree. Its a polyester type. Or maybe nylon? Looks very much like winter jacket polyester shell stuff to me.

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Clothears are watching this thread and taking note of our comments. This is going to be worth the wait.

Agreed! Same with the flightsuit. Nice and tight!

Re: Anyone got photos of the screen used vest sans back armor?
Hello
As Kurtyboy said we have been watching this thread with interest. We have been members of TDH for a little while now but we are relatively new to the Fett costume construction, we have been working on Boushh for the past 6 years and have striven for accuracy in every detail inside and out, we now really want to achieve that level of detail in our Fett parts. Hopefully with your help and the help of other Fett fans who have been studying the costume for years we can achieve this. Please feel free to pm me with anything you think may be helpful. I am currently trying to prototype the vest and ESB flight suit. I have spent the past few months having fabric dyed professionally for the suit, it took a lot of samples to get the colour. We will be at the TDH stand in Manchester if anyone is interested in seeing the fabric and our progress. It will be good to get feedback.

Re: Accurate vest discussion
Three months have passed and no signs of life. Typical.
