1st armor attempt

dechels

Jr Hunter
Well, I am nearing completion on my lid, or so I think...:) So I thought I would move right along to the chest armor I aquired a month or so ago from another member here. I don't have any pictures of what I started with, but it was ROUGH and after 2 hours with a belt sander, here's where I am:

I started with the Left chest LED hole's. I printed out a scaled LED template and Raf's templates for placement and shape. After cutting the holes, I went to fine tuning the shape. I have marked it where I plan to add dents with a heat gun. This will be an ESB set, so if you see any inaccuracies, please let me know! Here's the pic's.

I spent a couple more hours with the dremel and marked where the dents will go. Should have the dents completed and a coat of primer by the end of the weekend. Let me know what y'all think about the shapes of the pieces.photo 1.JPGphoto 2.JPGphoto 3.JPG

Fettwho- Thanks for the vote of confidence. I've been studying the reference photos, Raf's stencils, and WOF templates to try to get the shapes correct before applying the dents.

I am picking up a new heat gun today and hopefully will have time to apply dents this evening. Anybody have a suggestion for creating the three circle dents in the ab plate? They look to be perfect circles. Just want to get this detail correct.

You're doing an awesome job here (too)! The 3 circles are perfect circles and are there on the abdominal plate from the early Supertrooper project. You can achieve the circles by simply drilling 3 holes and then fill the inside of the ab plate. And for the dents, here is a thread where I already posted some files for the ESB armor dent placements ==> Armor Dent Placement.

I hope this helps!

Raf- That means a lot to me, that you approve of my work thus far! Thanks for the link to the dents. Very helpful, as there were a couple I had missed. Good idea on the 3 circles, I will do exactly that!

So I followed Raf's advise for the 3 holes on the ab plate. 1st, I printed the ab stencil from Raf's armor stencils and cut it out. Then I took a hole punch and punched a hole in a scrap piece of paper and overlaid it to make sure it was the correct size. Luckily, it was perfect. :D Then I took my drill bits and sized them to the hole punch. 1/4" is pretty close to perfect. I over laid the stencil and marked the holes with dots, as I had already hand sketched the circles. I was amazed at how close I was! Then I just drilled out the holes and will putty over them from the backside tonight.

Excellent work on the holes! Instead of putty you can try to glue a piece of sintra or something similar from the inside.
Keep up the great work!

Raf- Thanks! I will follow your advise again, and glue a piece on the back. Hoping to find time for dents this afternoon. The family has me pretty busy today! :)

Today I have been looking for good pics of the ab plate, to find out whether or not the 3 holes were rounded or sharp. They look to be pretty sharp. However, in looking through the ESB Gallery pics, I found what appears to be light coming from them. Is it possible that there was a light behind them at one time? My apologies if this has already been discussed.

Raf- I thought I found a post where you had a picture of a speaker behind the ab plate. Can't seem to locate it at the moment.

Thoughts?

Chris- Thanks for the support! I figure I'm off to the JP after the armor. Then on to that EE-3. I hope I can do as nice a job as you did! As soon as I'm finished, I'm headed to the Alamo!

Haha right on! Are u in the SA area? If u need help with anything just let me know also totally down to join u at the Alamo (y)

The holes shines because it was painted with metallic silver and it reflects light. There are no artificial lights (lamps/LEDs) in the holes.

The speaker was present and functional on the Supertrooper abdominal plate. Later this suit was painted and dented, giving birth to the Pre-Pro #1 suit. We can see the same abdominal plate on the Pre-Pro #2 suit too (this was in the fall of 1978), and about 4 years later this abdominal plate was repainted (again) in the ROTJ paint scheme, more exactly one of the ROTJ Stunt plates (now part of the ROTJ SE suit), but it seems that the speaker was removed from this plate (?) and placed inside the ROTJ Hero plate (this plate is the repainted ESB Hero abdominal plate).

Raf- thanks for the quick response and explanation! I knew i had seen that picture somewhere before, just couldn't seem to find it. Now I can move on and get these finished up.

By the way, I also noticed in the freeze chamber sequence, he has his knees are on upside down. I'm sure someone has s'pointed this out before, just thought it was interesting. :)

There are 3 different knee 'incidents' in Empire: in one scene he wears the knees inverted, in another scene he's wearing two right knees (the one on the left leg is the Pre-Pro #3 knee); the first two images are from the hallway scene, while in the carbon chamber scene, the one noticed by you, is with the knees upside down.

Raf- You are unbelievable!!! I pride my self in being a pretty knowledgeable Star Wars guy, but you are truly a scholar! I count myself blessed to have you on my team!

I got my new heat gun fired up and added the dents to the armor today. I also picked up some Celtec today, thanks for the recommendation lpitcher23, to make the shoulder bells and knees out of.
Going to lay some primer and metallic silver tonight!
